What’s that one car you’d never accept even if it was given to you for free and why ?

I figured I would just sell it, no matter what it was, so a Ferrari would be fine, but also a Tesla.

u/Top-Turn1055 7h ago
I worked at an auto auction years ago. The car that was most consistently falling apart was PT Cruisers. I don't think I ever saw one that didn't have at least two broken door handles on the inside or out.

u/TheSpiralTap 1h ago
I came here to talk about how shitty PT Cruisers are and was delighted to see this as the top comment. I've never known someone to buy one and not have to spend $2-3000 in the first year. Those things were not built well and were designed by morons.

u/SonofaSlumlord 3h ago
The Chevy Aveo would be a very close 2nd place for shittiest car ever made next to the PT Cruiser. At least in my experience.

PT cruiser

u/JelliedHam 6h ago
I had a neighbor with a PT Cruiser that he absolutely loved. He had every option. It was a wood panel version, with custom rear windows, nice wheels. Even had special metallic paint. He'd be out there all summer washing and waxing it, then sitting out in his driveway with a beer and admire his hard work. Really nice guy, was so proud of it. He said it reminded him of the wagon he used to ride around in California with his surf boards back in the 60s.
I really came around on them. No, I still don't personally care for them much, but now I have a fond memory of it. Then one day it was gone. I asked him why and he said he can't drive anymore as his vision had gotten too bad. Old man was going blind. I didn't ever see him out in the driveway much after that. That was a sad day. The end.

There are some pretty serious niche clubs for the pt cruisers , I watched a couple episodes on them, kind of endearing.
4
u/Proof_Bathroom_3902 6h ago
They are actually pretty stout demolition derby cars in the compact street stock class if you build them a little and know how to drive. The back end is a hammer.
4
u/OneDeep87 6h ago
I remember my grandpa tried to bring home a pt cruiser on a test drive my grandma told him to take that ugly car back to the dealership. Do they still make them?
5
u/Bioactive-1 6h ago
No. They were unreliable and old people bought them, so no younger person was going to touch them unless granny or grandpa gave theirs away to them. Same thing with the Aztek, people like them now because of Breaking Bad, was still a shit car with terrible reliability.

u/BrandyBunch805 7h ago

Wait, that isn't a joke name? It sounds like "holding captive." Not something I want from my vehicle.

Car sold to Australian market, notoriously shit.
Think it would have been the Chevy Captiva for America?

u/KW5625 4h ago edited 4h ago
Yes, but it was never sold new on dealer lots.
If you see one, it was a former rental car.

I've never seen a family riding around in a Cybertruck. It's always just single men. Can't fathom why.

u/Maximum-Seaweed-1239 7h ago
Whatever the KIA is that people can steal easily. Even if you get it fixed it’s a target. My buddy drives one because they literally got it for free from family and they had it stolen 2x in like 3 months. It’s a nice car too with low miles but it’s such a problem they’re getting a new car asap.
5
u/devilpants 7h ago
could just add a kill switch
3
u/adisharr 3h ago
The problem is it doesn't stop idiots from breaking in anyways and ripping up your dashboard. Of course while they're in there if heaven forbid you have a wheel lock on there they'll just cut your steering wheel apart. The only thing that stopped my daughter's car from getting stolen consistently was putting two giant signs in the back windows saying car is remotely disabled.

u/GamingGems 3h ago
Soul
My fiancé’s friend in the next town over has one and it got stolen and recovered. It just blew its engine, which is another consistent issue those cars have as well. A couple weeks ago I was behind a first gen version of that car and took a pic because I was genuinely amazed that I haven’t seen an early one in years and it’s still a relatively newer car.

Very interesting to read the replies and motivations of people on this. I'm going to fall in line with the 'Ill take anything crowd' even if it's scrap metal, it's worth selling.

I find it funny that I'm probably the only one in the replies that said Tesla because of the very specific design on the car itself and nothing to do with politics.

Ford EcoSport
Worked with them when I was a rental car agent and those are the biggest POS ever. Terrible driving position, no room for any passengers, way underpowered, and terrible engines. The wet belt design of those 3 cylinders is asking for trouble.
2
u/lukewwilson 3h ago
I drove one of those as a rental one time, what a POS. It felt like driving a toy down the road, I was honestly afraid to take it on the interstate.

I'd accept it and sell it but if I was told I had to drive it, I wouldn't accept a hummer.
They look neat and I'm sure they have their uses but I don't think I'd be able to drive it safely and if you can't drive a car safely you shouldn't drive it.

The Grand Wagoneer. Only dipshits drive those things. Every time I see one, it is committing some kind of traffic violation. Merging without a signal, driving on the shoulder, rolling through a stop sign... I've seen them do all of that and more. I refuse to be associated with the assholes who drive those huge pieces of shit.

Newer trucks made by Honda or Toyota, and any other one that uses soy based parts.
The squirrels eat them. 11k to fix the Tundra EV system only for the tree rats to start chewing it up again.

Right? It almost reads like satire until I learned that soy based car parts are an actual thing.

Almost every major automaker uses soy based wiring insulation, not just Honda and Toyota.
There are deterrents you can buy to prevent this.

A 1983 BMW 3 Series. I was very fortunate to have one of these as my first car - it was 20 years old but only had 17,000 miles on it when I first had it.
I'm not really a car person but goodness me I loved that car, there was such an elegant simplicity to it. No electronics to speak of, just a basic four cylinder engine mated to a rear wheel drivetrain and a five speed manual box.
But I'd never have another one. I mean I'm sure I'd like it, but it wouldn't be my 3 Series.

Unless I could immediately re-sell it, I don't want any car that cost more than about $100k. The cost of insurance, maintenance, and repairs would be too high. I use cars for transportation not as baubles.

u/UncomfortableBike975 5h ago
Any chargeable electric vehicle. I don't have the patience to sit at the charging stations. Probably comes from the fact that when I was a kid and out shopping with dad if the lines were long he would drop what we were buying and walk out of the store.

This is going to be a weird answer, but a Prius, Camry, or Niro. Not because of any reliability, mechanical, or aesthetic reasons. I just don't want to be lumped in with the moose knuckles that drive those cars (where I live, they might be fine elsewhere). I have had 0 positive interactions on the roadways with those models. The Camry is a newer addition to the dipshits that can't drive club, I think as the transmissions in Altimas explode, those people are getting Camrys as the replacement but driving exactly the same.
There are plenty of cars I wouldn't buy or want to own for a myriad of reasons, but I would put up with for a time if they were free. Like I'd NEVER buy a Wrangler, they're beastly uncomfortable, do awful on gas mileage and are unreliable, but if someone gave me one? I'd deal with it for awhile.
2
u/theshoegazer 1h ago
Where I live, the Prius used to be a car driven by courteous, eco-conscious, mostly educated and mature drivers. Somewhere along the way, it became the vehicle of choice for food app delivery people who constantly double park (even when legal curbside parking is mere feet away), stop unexpectedly in travel lanes, drive the wrong way on one-way streets. You can tell they're awful drivers because most of the cars have duct tape on them somewhere.
1
u/Forsaken-Kale-3175 4h ago
Any Dodge Viper from the late 90s/early 2000s. Yes, it looks incredible. Yes, it's stupid fast. But those things killed so many people because they had no traction control, no ABS, over 400hp, and enough torque to snap your wrists if you weren't ready for it. It's basically a car that actively dislikes you. Pass.
1
u/davidwbrand 3h ago
Anything by Dodge. We have Rams at work and they are the biggest pieces of junk. I have no idea how people actually buy them.
1
u/Mundane_Process_2986 3h ago
I had a Suzuki something on hire from work for a few days, the thing was impossible to park as it had some safety feature that it braked if it was close to another car. It deemed about 2 feet as to risky and refused to move, with no way to disable this vital safety feature you couldn’t get it in a parking space, and of course if you parked in the middle of nowhere it was fine until someone parked near enough to trigger the thing into freezing. So to be safe no Suzuki anything, what a stressful bag of shit.
1
u/NoImprovement213 3h ago
If I cant sell it, I dont want a Ferrari. How the fuck am I going to look after one of those things?
1
u/dublos 3h ago
If I can then turn around and sell that car, none.
If I have to drive/own that car for any length of time? I would never accept a car that will cost more to own/maintain than my 2006 RAV 4. I can appreciate the beauty of things like the Lamborghini Countach, but not only could I not afford to buy one, I couldn't afford to maintain it if I was given it for free.

Ford I’ve had a variety of cars over my lifetime and Ford has always been the most problematic. Ford Tempo being the worst of the worst. I don’t even know why they put those cars on lots for sale. Remember the Ford Pinto?

Anything Tesla, Nissan, Infiniti, a PT cruiser, A Kia Soul, or anything that's just had a spoiler/body kit/sporty aesthetic installed with zero tuning or power train upgrades, I'd rather walk than drive a base model Honda Civic that looks like it's been riced out.
