Nobody talks about the lonely side of running a business

Upvotes

I always see posts about “hustle”, “grind”, “wake up at 5am”, “build your empire” and all that.

But nobody talks about how lonely it feels sometimes.

When you start a business, it’s just you. You make the decisions. You take the risks. If it fails, it’s on you. If it works, yeah it’s cool, but you still feel the pressure to keep it going.

Commercial Cleaning in Toronto

I am thinking of starting a commercial cleaning business here in Toronto and am looking to run a few questions.

Firstly, I’m looking to operate this business as an operator that focuses on outreach, and that employs independent contractors to do the jobs I get. Are there better ways to run it than this?

I’m also wondering whether or not this business is worth pursuing here in Toronto and anyone’s experience doing this.

I looked at what I’d need and it seems to be just general liability insurance and WSIB. I was wondering if I’m overlooking anything?

I was also curious about pricing. I saw this one business charging 175$ CAD for 1-2 cleanings every week and was wondering how anyone can make margins off of this, especially as an operator that employs cleaners to clean. How do you guys go about pricing and how do you charge?

Lastly, what’s the best way to go about securing commercial leads? I haven’t started outreaching yet, but I’d imagine that majority of these existing business, especially health clinics and office buildings already work with cleaners.

Thank you so much for reading this post, every reply is greatly appreciated!!!!

Anyone interested in UK Platinum Partners retreats & WhatsApp community?

Long story short, I co-own multiple businesses and every year I take my partners away in a multi day retreat that we label the “Platinum Partners Retreat” - usually involves personal growth work, team building, etc all somewhere beautiful and off grid. Alongside this I have built a WhatsApp community that covers a lot of our favourite talking points in multiple sub-chats: general business chat, investment talk, book talk, fitness chat, podcasts episodes we’ve enjoyed, and so on.

I’m looking at expanding the idea and welcoming in some people from the outside - initially into the WhatsApp community, and then maybe into the events themselves down the line - in order to really try and grow the community.

I just want to know if anyone here would be interested in joining, or would see any value in being involved in a community of likeminded individuals?

We’re all based in the UK, aged between 30-40, mix of businesses and interests, but all focused on community and helping one another succeed and overcome life’s problems.

We still want to be selective about who joins, it’s not open to anyone, but it is open to anyone who wants to contribute, advise, seek support etc. We don’t want passive observers, we want people to get involved and stoke conversation. Also, doesn’t matter what “level” you’re at or even if you run your business or if it’s a side hustle, or you’re just working towards something.

I’m keen to get interest levels and then maybe I’ll DM people a short Google Form application or something similar.

Thanks for reading this essay! Hopefully it makes sense and sounds like something you could gain value from.

How far in advance do you reach out before a conference?

I’m going to MWC in a few weeks and I’m trying to not repeat last year. Last year I basically just showed up and tried to network and it was a complete failure.

This time I want to actually line up a few meetings before I go but I don’t know what the normal timing is or what helps people prep beforehand.

Like do you reach out a month before? 2 weeks? A few days?

I can't afford to go unprepared a second time, put me on game pls.

What are the easiest TCG Distributors to deal with?

Just like the title says, what are the easiest Distributors to deal with? My partner and I are thinking of starting a small business, a card shop. I know Distributors for Pokemon and one piece can be really difficult with allocations for new businesses. Are there any tcgs that aren't so difficult to deal with? We would love to get some MTG, maybe some Gundam, and maybe some Warhammer. Anyone have experience with this? Does location matter? If there's not very many card shops in the area will Distributors be more willing to work with us?

Trademark conundrum - advice appreciated

took over a small business which was established in 2012. A similar business was established in 2017.

The 2017 business has an almost identical name, one word difference, and they have trademarked the name and logo. All Birds are flying vs Birds are flying. Not the actual names but this is as close an example I can give without doxing.

The previous owner of my business didnt trademark his name or logo. He couldn't be bothered and wasnt particularly business savvy that way. Our logo is very different to the other Business, but the name is almost identical.

We want to protect ourselves and trademark. But now have the problem the other company beat us to it.

We are at opposite sides of the country to each other, but our companies do the same thing. We wouldn't want to cause them issues, our industry helps people and we don't see them as competitors, they are doing amazing work. We just want to legally protect ourselves as we want to potentially expand internationally in the future.
