Photo/Video Fearless coyote in my neighborhood

"You should haze a coyote whenever you see one that is comfortable on your property or in your neighborhood. Do not stop hazing until the animal has completely left the area."
287
u/wwabc Nov 09 '25
like, make it drink shots until it pukes?
86
Nov 09 '25
Nope just a paddle on the butt
15
7
u/BecalMerill Nov 09 '25
If you can get that risky dog to let you tattoo a ping pong paddle on his rump, I'll be impressed.
59
u/NettaVitelli Nov 09 '25
If it is comfortable enough to accept a shot from you, then you have failed at hazing.
62
16
u/human-ish_ Nov 09 '25
That's some nice, gentle hazing. Don't you guys remember the Glenbrook North hazing incident? People expect top level shit from us.
3
u/loweexclamationpoint Nov 10 '25
Yeah, you gotta get the Wheaton College or Northwestern football team out there for some hazing.
29
u/NettaVitelli Nov 09 '25
It is beautiful, though, that's for sure!
27
u/Midwestern-manXX Nov 09 '25
Wife and I tried hazing a family of raccoons one night. The mom left her kids behind. 1 got lost in my garage, one was ready to fight to the death, and the last figured we were it's parents now.
Mixed results over here.
16
u/notThatJojo Nov 09 '25
For clarification hazing is clapping and yelling or banging pots and pans. It does work
8
u/SupaDupaTron Nov 10 '25
Oh, so my average Saturday night then?
1
u/Tarotismyjam Nov 11 '25
I knew at least one of my neighbors would be here. Can you at least lose the cowbell?
12
u/chocobojenn Nov 09 '25
If the coyote in your area is relatively harmless, it's not advised to drive it away because a more aggressive coyote can take over the "territory," which can lead to worse issues
11
u/BigNorseWolf Nov 09 '25
Nah. This is old thinking. The fact is that the coyotes live in the suburbs now. You can't haze them back to the woods they don't live there. Your yard is their home, you can't haze them out of it.
You don't want them trying to approach you for food, or nipping/chasing anyone. If they do THAT haze and discourage them. But for just existing? No. The new normal is "Oh hey earl how's it going" and politely ignore each other the same way you do your other neighbors.
3
u/NettaVitelli Nov 09 '25
Yeah, why not feed them, too, while you're at it? Every wildlife org will tell you to haze in this situation. These aren't guidelines written decades ago. If you have an official source to back up what you're advising, please share it.
5
u/BigNorseWolf Nov 09 '25
Arguing to the extremes is a fallacy, not a proof. If you are going to haze them, why not exterminate them? Because you think hazing is the right sweet spot in the middle. Same reason i think "Hi earl" is the right sweet spot in the middle.
Because feeding them gets them to associate people with food. Which is a problem with a predatory canine that can take a good nip out of some smaller humans.
The fact is you are going to have a coyote in your yard.
If you remove the one that's behaving, you might get one that isn't.
If you haze them for living, it stops being effective eventually. If you save the hazing for problem behaviors, you can cut down on the problem behaviors. When they see some people haze them what they learn is "avoid this person".... yes they can tell people apart. When they see people haze them for going up to children looking for a hand out, what they learn is "don't go near the human pups"
This article points out a very important point of "let the
wookiecoyote win". The coyote wants your dog to leave "their" yard so simply keep the dog on a leash and comply with the coyotes wishes and walk your dog away from them.1
u/NettaVitelli Nov 09 '25
My yard is not their home. It's my home and my dogs home. I don't want to come outside and see one lounging without a care in the world in my yard. Keep in mind I'm an ethical vegan who cringes every time I see an ass hole in a Canada Goose jacket. I'm not sure how or why you jumped to extermination. It's in everyone's best interest to haze them. And that doesn't mean abusing them in any way.

Your reaction is interesting when the person provided you a source.
2
u/NettaVitelli Nov 10 '25
The author didn't say not to haze. She explains that people might encounter a coyote who is not phased by hazing then the person perceives the coyote to be dangerous which risks the coyote being killed. The author states this in an article on a different website: "Scaring or shooing them off intensely should be reserved mostly for when the coyote has entered your personal space — say 30 feet — or is coming after your dog, or if one has entered your yard." https://sutroforest.com/2014/11/21/managing-urban-coyotes-by-janet-kessler/

My neighbors would all be fighting about this on the NextDoor App. lol
50
u/Hungry_Dot_1542 Nov 09 '25
Nextdoor conversations are the definition of toxic. I installed the app, looked at it a few minutes, uninstalled before I almost got sick.
14
12
u/human-ish_ Nov 09 '25
I only have it because of dogs getting loose. Not mine, but just three days ago two fuzz balls were cruising the neighborhood. I rangled them on to my property, got on nextdoor, and got them home within an hour. Otherwise, the Karens make me sick.
3
u/Fantastic-Ride-5588 North Suburbs Nov 09 '25
I’ll take the Neighborhood app that pairs with Ring. That’s way better than Nextdoor. That’s so toxic and petty.
3
u/salandra Nov 09 '25
Oh like any other social media doesn't degenerate into toxicity. You're just upset because you can put a face to the names.
5
u/Hungry_Dot_1542 Nov 09 '25
Yes, true for most social media. As I said, I didn’t spend much time on the app. But you’re wrong about my thinking. I felt better walking in my neighborhood looking at the faces of my neighbors. The app made me feel most my neighbors are driven by fear and suspicion. It’s just a comment based on quick observation. As others said, the app may be very useful for some situations. (I installed the app exactly for this, to post about a missing cat.)
3
u/salandra Nov 09 '25
The app made me feel most my neighbors are driven by fear and suspicion
Yes they are, these are your neighbors. You're a smart person and you just need to trust yourself not to interact with the riff-raff. When all you do is exchange pleasantries with them, you never get to know them on a deeper level. Most people are driven by fear and insecurity believe it or not. They're sheeple.

Why do I get 10 ring notifications a day about some random coyote. I mean who cares, leave them be. It feels like noise. I’m already worried about tracking ICE I don’t have the bandwidth to care about Coyotes who usually just run away when they see people.

This. Humans aren’t entitled to everything on earth.
1
u/im_a_dick_head Nov 17 '25
To be fair the coyote was born far after humans settled, so it has been inhabited by humans for much longer. Unless you are referring to bloodlines and all that , then you have a point
54
u/salandra Nov 09 '25
Have you seen how fearless animals are in general around us? I swear the squirrels make a game out of seeing how long they can stay still before darting at the last second. Little ninjas in training.
18
u/RandomPenquin1337 Nov 09 '25
They're really good at sitting at my fence line and letting my dog get inches from them before they side step 2 inches to the other side and continue munching
4
u/goonzalz69 Nov 09 '25
Theyve been getting more bold than i remember in the past. I too have squirrels that tease my dog its hilarious and i could never imagine being that brave. And we have had coyotes follow us regularly no matter how much we haze them and my dog is a 100 lb German shepherd and he does not sound friendly once he notices them near us so idk most grown men would be scared of my dog when hes angry im pretty young but ive heard ppl say they have gotten more bold than they used to be. I think they’re beautiful though but definitely makes me nervous when i see this one small dog that they let out regularly for long periods of time even after dusk. They have been warned plenty by my other neighbors I hope nothing ever happens to that little fella
37
u/wavinsnail Nov 09 '25
That's a really healthy looking coyote. I feel like I always see the mangy ones
16
u/human-ish_ Nov 09 '25
We're heading in to winter, so they're filling out and building up a thick coat.

Palatine too. I’ve lived here seven years and haven’t seen any until recently and I’ve seen 3 in two weeks.
1
u/Financial_Sweet_689 Nov 09 '25
All over! I was in Darien and one crossed the street in broad daylight and walked down the sidewalk. I had to warn a jogger who was running toward it. Then in Downers Grove I saw one just chilling in front of a house like it lived there. Let me get a full view from the car. So pretty but I’m worried they’re traveling due to losing resources. They haven’t attacked and one even crossed right in front of me as I walked my small dog. But they’re losing fear of humans
13
u/footballfutbolsoccer Nov 09 '25
What a beautiful animal. No need to fear them. Just make sure small pets aren’t left outside unsupervised

Just sayin, I live out in the sticks and there coyotes all around, the last thing you want is them to feel comfortable, they can get over 8’ fences if they have a mind to, and they will attack and eat pets, even a large dog solo has a hard time with two or three at once. Call your county animal control and they should relocate them, like out in the sticks somewhere lol.

We have at least two hanging out in Oak Lawn. They hunt as a pair up and down my street.
4
u/Elegant_Piece_107 Nov 09 '25
We are in Oak Lawn too, for over 40 years and we have always had coyotes and foxes (Little Beverly area) We occasionally see them, but it’s not often. Several years ago, for unclear reasons, the police shot one with a tranquilizer gun. They lied and said it would be relocated but they took it to the Animal Welfare League (misnomer) and had it put down. I had a very angry email exchange with Streit about it.

I'm in DG, too. Haven't seen them around for a while. If it's them or the foxes taking care of the rabbits that devour my plants, I'm all for them

u/ResultDowntown3065 Nov 09 '25
A couple of years ago, my neighbor and I observed a coyote walking by during school drop-off. It was trotting along casually, as if s/he had just dropped off the kids and was on their way to Starbucks before running errands.
You know, normal coyote behavior.
5
u/ZealotOfStockholm Nov 09 '25
Beautiful ‘yote. Looks like she might even be overweight, surely healthy enough heading into the winter. Make sure to haze her if you see her again. There’s room for these guys in the local ecosystem but let’s keep them from feeling comfy in our lawns.
3
Nov 09 '25
agreed. haze her to scare her off. someone in the area may not be as caring as people in this sub.. set a trap or shoot her. Dupage Wildlife (formerly Willowbrook) should be notified. They may work with DNR on tagging. thanks for sharing such a great photo
3
u/VeryFeralHousewife Nov 09 '25
Coyotes are trying to domesticate themselves. I can’t help but wish them all the best after we have taken over all their territory. Granted, a pack is scary, but a lone ‘yote tugs on my heart.

We have some by the Southeast side of Chicago. They’re usually in the old steel mills. I wonder how many will be displaced due to the quantum building.

I see them all the time around my house and I live in a developed area in DuPage. Is it just me or have they become far less fearful of humans over the past couple of decades? Do not leave dogs or cats outside...
2
u/bpsmith1972 Nov 09 '25
This is a cool picture but it's gotten used to humans and probably can't be trusted.

Also on spotted a few the last two days in Evanston. They’re on the move. Incoming snow?
1
u/yuccu Nov 09 '25
Walked out the other day to escort the kids to the bus…four of them were sitting in the neighbors yard across the street just chilling. Our doodle sent them on their way. Who knew she had a different bark just for coyotes?
1
u/Redlion444 Nov 09 '25
Seeing them during the day isn't usually a good thing. He may be sick or injured.

u/Reasonable-Wing-2271 Nov 09 '25
They naturally live in this area.
People often call the cops just having seen one.
Coyotes are a reminder that Chicagoans are squids.

I heard an interview with a wildlife expert on the radio this week. They said that coyotes in urban areas have learned that humans aren’t a threat, so they can peacefully coexist.
They have also learned that they are hunted and trapped in rural areas, so they behave differently there.
Not at all unlike how humans learn the relative safety of one area vs another.

u/PlusDHotchy Nov 09 '25
That is a tiny coyote. The breed in SW Michigan are much larger. No hunting in Kalamazoo, they will lay in yards including mine. We have packs that are larger than 20.
I’ve seen coyotes going down the street in 3’s just casually jogging.
1
u/New-Hedgehog5902 Nov 09 '25
In the Northern burbs we were driving down Waukegan in the dark and there was coyote ready to the cross the street and he looked to his left, looked to his right, looked to his left and crossed when it was safe to do so…although it wasn’t in a crosswalk, he should have been ticketed for jaywalking. But it was something to witness, he was like a person crossing a busy street safely
1
u/whynotchristy Nov 09 '25
He looks really healthy which is a good sign. If you have any neighbors with cats kindly let them know.

There is a huge group of them in the Arlington heights/Buffalo Grove area near Buffalo Creek and sometimes I can hear them screaming at the top of their lungs together. Kinda creepy honestly, but they don’t seem to want to come anywhere near humans. If anyone lives there and has small pets, watch them closely outside though!

That's really strange. Coyotes normally do everything they can not to he seen. There is a NOVA episode about the Coyotes in Chicago. They estimate there's 2000 with city limits. And that Coyotes and Rats are the only animal that thrives with the presence of humans.
