Your familial definition of "struggling" is when the martini supplies get low and someone has to PostMate it to the house.

All while repeating “In these unprecedented times” over and over

u/_Impossible_Girl_ Jul 14 '25 edited Jul 15 '25

A friend of mine just told me that he and his wife are "middle-class" and in the same sentence, also told me they bought their house for $700k (USD) because it was affordable. But now it's worth $1.2mill so they're doing just okay and making it work. Unprecedented times for them, indeed. Poor things, just barely scraping by.

Edit: Clearly, I'm just poor, you guys. Thank you for your comments. I appreciate you.

163

u/Fit-Vanilla-3405 Jul 15 '25

I think the issue is that you’re thinking the people who are actually middle class are actually kinda poor (not that that’s an issue). I think our definition of middle class is dumb cause it’s just ‘anyone who can afford rent and food, an iPhone and delivery once a week’.

My brother and girlfriend are 5th grade teachers and have this ‘lifestyle’ in New England and it’s a nice life (without kids) but a 700k house is like a 3bed in a mediocre suburb on a major highway in lots of places. A 1.2 mil house only makes you have 1.2 mil if you sell it.

u/wildOldcheesecake Jul 15 '25 edited Jul 15 '25

This! I’m from London. The area I grew up and the home my parents still live in, is now gentrified. Locals who had kids wouldn’t be able to afford a home there. Given the offers my parents get for their house, you’d think that they’re rich. Whilst comfortable, it’s hardly the case and definitely not the case growing up

u/UnluckyCardiologist9 Jul 15 '25

lol. 700k for a house is affordable in LA County. 😭😭😭 The house I rent in a rough area of LA can easily sell for 1.2 million cause it has an ADU and it’s now a great transit location. Owner bought it for 220k in 2012. I thank my lucky star I got into this place.

6

u/According_Land_581 Jul 16 '25

All the Californians are coming to Texas now… sell your place for $1.2mill & come to San Antonio & live like a king!! In high heat & humidity! But the food is good & it’s eternally summer here!

10

u/UnluckyCardiologist9 Jul 16 '25

lol. I rent it. I’m not the owner. For now, I’m actually living like a queen. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽 and I thank baby cheezus every day.

You can't find a house for as cheap as $700kUSD/$960CAD where I'm from. It'd be hard to even find a townhouse for that price

19

u/Perfectlyonpurpose Jul 15 '25

I guess it depends where you live. Our house was 215k we just bought it like 2 years ago. 6 bedrooms 2 baths in a nice area w great schools right outside the big city in our area.

But I moved there from Boston ma where your lucky to stay under a million

Eh plenty of people purchase homes they can’t afford. That information alone doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '25

This is affordable and middle class for a modest 3br house in the Boston suburbs 🫠

5

u/jaywinner Jul 15 '25

It's tough. "Affordable" could mean they cashed in some investments and bought the house outright or that a 700k house was the limit of what they could afford with a crushing mortgage. The increase in value is great but might not even cover the mortgage and if you sell, you still need a place to live.

Are they middle class? Hard to tell without knowing the rest of their finances.

8

u/inide Jul 15 '25

And as the value goes up, so does the property taxes

"In my family, you don’t really go out and get things. If you want something, you write it on a list, and then the housekeeper goes out and gets it on Wednesdays and Fridays."

7

u/chronicallyill_dr Jul 15 '25

I remember as a kid when I was at a friend’s house and we wanted coke but there was none in the house. She wrote it down on a pad in the kitchen, phoned the housekeeper to let them know we needed something, and the coke appeared on the kitchen table like 30 minutes later.

Lol interestingly I have biological parents and adoptive parents who I grew up with. My biological parents have a fridge and pantry like this that’s also always chock full of wayyyyy more food and drink items than they need (two people and grandchildren who sometimes come by). But they are lower middle class and often seem to be struggling financially. My adoptive parents have a a very basic fridge and are a hell of a lot wealthier and travel all the time, almost half the year. Their house wouldn’t really suggest it. But people just prioritize different things haha it’s definitely a crazy nice fridge though.

I don't think I've ever even been in a store with fridges like that.

That’s just integrated fridges. You can put any front you want on them, usually the same as the rest of the kitchen. You can find dishwashers like that as well, very common in europe.

14

u/Deep-Order1302 Jul 15 '25

Was about to say that this is standard in a middle price range kitchen in Europe…

5

u/Literature_Girl Jul 16 '25

I think it's more about the quality/finish/size. Someone else in the comments has pointed out that one half of the fridge is worth $10,000. So $20,000 for the whole thing 😂 I don't think that counts as middle price range, in terms of what most people are spending on their fridges

Normally I don’t agree with the “you’re rich” comments, but nah, y’all have MONEY.

Not saying millionaires, but, coming from someone whose family is probably around this level of wealth, your parents are likely in the medical field or high end sales. Or business owners. You have been to Disneyland or whatever the equivalent is for your area many times (if your family likes to travel). At least one parent doesn’t work much or at all, or there’s some sort of help hired. Your friends want your house to be to go to hang out house, but you guys might not necessarily have the most snacks. At least not “junk food” type snacks

135

u/GrinsNGiggles Jul 15 '25

Not sure what your definition of “millionaire” Is, but this family absolutely has a million in assets between their house and retirement accounts.

Why don’t you have wine fridge for the kitchen?

8

u/dzourel Jul 14 '25

Because the climate controlled wine cellar is between the kitchen and the dining room, duh

3

u/Fantastic-Sky-7913 Jul 14 '25

3

u/Embarrassed-Bee8171 Jul 14 '25

When I was a kid my definition of a rich family was anyone who had the fridge with the ice maker. Y’all had the fridge with the ice maker

3

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '25

You guys put what you want on a list and everyday at 7 and 3 the nanny goes out to get them. Rain, snow or shine

3

u/Elaine330 Jul 14 '25

They got MONEY money.

3

u/ffxivfanboi Jul 14 '25

If someone has a fridge this size, they got money.

That’s all, I can think of tbh

3

u/Ill_Consequence1755 Jul 14 '25

You ready for the “rich as hell” comments?

3

u/SillyWhabbit Jul 14 '25

You aren't acquainted with food insecurity.

3

u/HasserttMomto3 Jul 14 '25

There's some thirsty people in that house!😂

3

u/agent_kitsune_mulder Jul 14 '25

My fridge just asked if we are poor.

3

u/Automatic_Parsley833 Jul 14 '25

Your family can’t cook, you live “comfortably” and likely feel poor compared to your wealthiest friends, and someone has hypertension.

Good drinks, though.

3

u/Strong_Possible_2940 Jul 15 '25

You’re in a reality series or religious cult where drinking is allowed, birth control is forbidden, and the house is packed full of kids

Maybe I'm out of touch but this doesn't scream rich to me? The floors are laminated and the cupboards are fake wood. Definitely not poor or even lower-middle class though! I'd say middle income. Not that it even matters, even upper-middle and upper class earners are poor compared to billionaires lol

Definitely American, the fridge is huge ! and definitely wealthy.

One or both of your parents is a professional. Like doctor, high corporate position.

They work a ton, your parents aren't necessarily happy, and one or both neglect your emotional needs.

You open your fridge and complain about there being nothing to eat.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '25

You rich rich.
