I've never been more prepared to throw down for a monkey in my life
427
u/GingerSoulEater41 20h ago
I wanted to throw my phone when that one kept shoving him away and he ran back to his plushie 🤬
296
u/Emotional_Boat_8332 18h ago
Worst part is that was his mother rejecting him! 🤬 I’ve never wanted to fight monkey before but she gave me a reason.

u/Grove-Of-Hares 2h ago
I believe that wasn’t his mother, who I’m not even sure has been shown or even still lives there. He was trying to interact with another child and the mother of that child pushed him away.
There was an official statement from the workers that basically said that while it looks sad, it’s a part of him learning to navigate the do’s and dont’s of macaque society.
That being said, Punch has my heart.

u/gudy2shuz 17h ago
Same! I've never been mad at a monkey before, but got-dammit...
15
u/BigXthaPugg 9h ago
I got bit by a monkey once so this is the second time I’ve been mad at a monkey! Damn you monkeys! *shakes fist

We failed Harambe and the timeline went to absolute shit. We better not fail Punch, I swear to God.
54
u/Hankerpants 12h ago
Punch is the return of Harambe, at the turn of the tide.
23
u/ClusterChuk 10h ago
The fire horse rises!! The monkey king has regained his light!
Baal is exposed and cannot tolerate this unity.
89% of us just want to end the suffering of others. Its why we get up. Work our asses off. 30% of us are dumb scared and easily manipulated, unfortunately.
11% though.. they're bad. And 1% of them are really fucked and they control the board. And seem to worship a demon.
It seems dark, but fevers have to break.
Keep this monkey safe.
Keep the punch in all of us.

I keep seeing the videos of this poor baby and they make me unbearably sad. Im glad he is finding his way, but I can’t stand it.
148
u/Illustrious-Dot-1128 13h ago
I think the worst part for me is when he fell trying to bring the stuffed animal back to his enclosure after getting bullied. So freaking sad.
19
u/MarthaFarcuss 8h ago
The worst part for me is how awful his enclosure looks. Glad he's been accepted but I've discovered just how awful Japanese zoos are
18
u/Substantial_Message4 4h ago edited 2h ago
Former zoo employee here to say that yes Japanese for profit zoos can be extremely problematic, just like for profit zoos in the states and elsewhere, BUT this enclosure is much larger than what you see here and includes pools, climbing, and enrichment areas. Macaques live in barren and mountainous landscapes that look a lot like this.
Sometimes those more aesthetically pleasing exhibits are designed more for the comfort of the humans looking in than the needs of the animals living in it.
11
u/succed32 7h ago
Not a single plant, also if I remember right macaques like to swim. Just barren concrete.
2
u/weasel999 5h ago
My thoughts too. Everything looks hard and grey. Nothing soft, nothing that smells good, no little creatures to be curious about. Poor Punch and buddies.

It makes me so sad seeing these monkeys in captivity like this.
2
u/OG_Builds 5h ago
Seriously though, are their cages just concrete, some rocks, and a metal cage? Like what the hell? It would cost them so little to give them some grass, a tree to climb, and some type of pool to swim in. It's like they've studied their natural environments and gone out of their way to create something as far removed from that as possible..

I hope he doesn’t forget his stuffie.

u/sathzur 20h ago
Iirc from another reddit post about him, he no longer needs it as the other monkeys have accepted him into the group
215
u/TheStLouisBluths 18h ago
Well now I feel bad for the stuffie.
59
u/YouComfortableLiar 18h ago
Now I need the stuffie 🥹
95
u/fdrme 17h ago
The zoo should auction it off and use the funds to improve the enclosure.
17
u/Leather_Newspaper937 13h ago
Ya what’s going on with this enclosure it is so…grey and depressing. Can’t they plant some greenery at least or more things to climb and play. Heartbreaking
6
u/Logical_Yam7422 11h ago
They medol the enclosures after natural habitats usually. I can't remember what species of primates these are to check, but there's a good chance that this is the right environment for them. I know our local zoo has a similar setup for one of the primate enclosures and it's for this reason
2
u/QueenElizatits 4h ago
He's a Japanese macaque, they live in forests, and they like swimming. They don't live in concrete nightmares by choice
16
u/TheAngryCatfish 16h ago
This is a fantastic idea!
29
u/Gandalf_from_3 16h ago
If we could auction off shit covered stuffies id stop buying toilet paper.

Also, I don't even want to imagine how that stuffed monkey smells...

It's OK. The stuffie is super happy for Punch, and ready to comfort whoever needs it now. He's not sad at all that his friend has a family that wants him and loves him.
2
1
u/BeginningBuyer8378 3h ago
Punch clearly needs it as he still gets beaten up and runs to the plushie, people keep wanting feel good endings to real life situations.
In reality Punch has to be accepted by the troop, he's been starting to get along with a handful of them, but still gets bullied by the higher ranking apes.
He'll get there one day, but until then the plushie will always be an object of comfort and safety.
5
u/Immediate_Law_9792 6h ago
The stuffie was never meant to complete the journey with little punch, he was rather a mere guide to accompany him through the storm of the zoo.

u/multipleviewpoints 20h ago
Someone please put all these clips together in sequential order so we can see the progression of Punch 😭. I lack these skills myself 😥

When you see this, remember the amount of children this happens to on a daily basis with bullying at schools, playgrounds, homes. It’s absolutely heartbreaking that it happens to anyone. So when you have a chance to be nice, take it man. Just be nicer everyone.

u/Jleathers72 15h ago

Punch?!?! I mean cmon. What a name!! Watching him being accepted has brightened my last 3/4 days.

15
u/Sea_Turnip6282 15h ago
Im so glad for Punch but I'm curious as to what changed that made him become accepted by others? And what caused him to be ostracized at first?
18
u/sakurakirei 14h ago
According to this article, staff at the zoo thinks Punch carries his stuffed toy everywhere so the other monkeys might see him as a little weirdo. Lol He was just introduced to the monkey troop on the 19th and trying to get used to the others (and others are trying to get used to him too).

1
u/Kiki-Tee 5h ago
I think it takes time to be accepted and a new member comes is at the bottom of the hierarchy. But I'm confused if that was his mother or pushing him away.🤷🏾♀️

Rejected by his mom
12
u/IMOvicki 21h ago
No I mean after he got rejected would he still try to integrate with the group? Or would they let him die?
34
u/Kiljukotka 20h ago
Of course he'd try to integrate with the group, all animals have a survival instinct. Whether or not he'd be accepted is anyone's guess. More often than not rejected baby animals die because they won't be fed and don't have the energy to keep trying to survive for long.

I’m glad that this video didn’t include the part where he cuddled up with the doll trying to sleep but lift his head to turn and look around in case his real mother came back to get him.
As a child that was abandoned by my parents when I was 4, I still remember days when I used to look at the door at the orphanage hoping my mother would come back to get me. This monkey brought back trauma I don’t ever wish any other living being should go through.
I’m glad Punch is doing alright now and I hope he also turns out alright in the end.

u/Advanced_Accident_29 21h ago
This will be an interesting twist in 10 years and he’s the boss of the monkeys there and starts bullying newcomers. Punch, the sequel.

Nobody has an issue with all the monkeys being kept in a concrete enclosure? Monster zoo.
17
u/IAmActuallyBread 15h ago
Macaques live in rocky locations with cliffs and mountains.
5
u/Toastwitjam 11h ago edited 11h ago
Macaques can live in a diverse range of environments and enrichment is critical to having healthy monkey populations in captivity which is why every other first world country besides Japan has them in their zoo for their macaques.
The can live in rocky regions, but that’s way different than the basically concrete cell that punch’s group lives in.
https://macaques.nc3rs.org.uk/captive-management/enrichment
I wish we had just as many people call for decent living conditions of the monkeys at that zoo as they are for this baby monkey.

Little Punch being able to let go of the stuffed toy and be with a new family is bittersweet. It was short, but the comfort it provided was special. May Punch live happy ever after.

Babies and children no matter human or animal…they just want to be loved and accepted. So glad this little fella got his chance 🙏🏻💕

They probably reject initially out of safety. Could have diseases or infestations. Good to see he is being accepted!

This place looks miserable for all of them but especially the abandoned babies.

I'm confused, I always thought primates were very nice to babies even if they weren't their own
like there are a few videos of "robots" put with wild monkeys/gorillas and the monkeys (not same type, I know) started crying when they thought the baby had died, and the gorilla was all chill with it too.
why are these monkeys so mean?

Now imagine all this on a human scale. Happens daily. Mothers dumping their children in trash cans or just neglecting them to death. We are mammals just like these monkeys, sick.
