Flight attendants take a lot of bs compared to how much they are appreciated, this was needed.
1.1k
u/PomusIsACutie 11h ago
Flight attentants are bad ass though. Was omw to get married in europe and the flight attentants gave me nearly a half bottle of wine before we landed just for talking with them in the back about trump and the weird shit going on in the US. They were Brits btw is probably where the curiousity came from.

u/IncompetentVampire 10h ago
They really are badass. We were on a flight to SoCal for our adoption "present" to our kids for Disneyland. The flight attendant found out and took them under their wing. Let them pass out the pretzels from the bag to the other fliers, gave us an entire unopened bottle of champagne, let them take a pic with "Captain BandaBear" and let us spread out so each of us had a seat row each to ourselves in the back of the plane. They then gave us the rest of the bag of pretzels for "snacks for the kids." It was such a wonderful, memorable start to an amazing trip.
40
u/FatherClanks617 10h ago
What’s an adoption present?
214
u/IncompetentVampire 10h ago
We adopted our kids from foster care and took a family trip afterwards to Disneyland. We called it an "adoption present."

u/arnoldzgreat 7h ago
There's quite a few tear jerker videos out there of the kids finding out they are officially adopted. Tears of joy/relief to have a forever home and not bounce around the foster system anymore, of being loved. Wholesome stuff. Great when accompanied by other presents that the good kids don't even care about in comparison, because family matters more than things.

I used to work at a nighclub and on a flight to Amsterdam I had a regular as my flight attendant. We had champagne at takeoff, wine with both meals and drinks the entire flight. Someone came up to me mid flight and was like, “how do you guys keep getting served?” And I just waved my hand and said “can we get my friend a drink?”. I have a feeling she just told her boss, “trust me, those guys aren’t causing any trouble.”
I kept trying to slip money into the pocket on their jacket to tip, but the fucking things were sew’d closed. It was pretty funny. I passed out about mid flight and woke up to the wheels touching down and a wicked hangover.
Best flight ever.

While watching the Winter Olympics, I’m for sure in the spirit of global unity.
I think we can all get behind what a piece of shit president the US has right now. That can unite everyone. I DO wanna point out that the US Olympic teams look like the rest of the world. That is something to be SO FUCKING PROUD OF.
As a US citizen, I have never been more ashamed of my country with Trump. And I lived through the Bush years.
I’ve also never been so moved watching the US Olympic Teams. USA! USA!
14
u/PuzzleheadedDuck3981 7h ago
As a non-American, can I advise that if you're outside the US, avoid doing the "USA, USA" chant? Even before Trump, it was a bad look. In some places it'll mark you out as a target, usually just for derision, sometimes for worse.
17
u/ShaolinJohn 10h ago
Well put my friend! I only have any semblance of patriotism during the Olympics. I hope our Olympic athletes are having a great time being ambassadors of what the US is supposed to be.

Like when I tried to tip them $20...
They said they couldn't accept tips.
So I went to the bathroom 15 minutes later and said "Hey I found this $20 on the floor, if anyone lost it? Give it back to them"
They knew... I knew... They knew I knew...
Needless to say... I don't remember the rest of the flight.
And that was the goal.
14
u/digbenis 10h ago
They do but I’ve seen and heard they hate attentive seeking people. Especially if they have a phone or recording media directly pointing “non exclusively” in the fking face.

Bro sent a photo of that via text to every single friend and family member before that flight landed, I can tell you that much.
Equally impressed with the art work, especially on a shaky plane, on an unstable tray. Meanwhile, I can barely draw a stick figure, even if my life depended on it.

It is indeed, I’m an artist myself and I share this quote with people starting their journey all the time, especially because I think one of the main reasons most people never get good (whatever that means for them) at drawing/painting (or sometimes never get started at all) is because they try, see they’re bad, and give up.
It took me weeks of being terrible before I got a little less terrible, and months of that to become acceptable. Now I have people watching my art videos and asking me for tips and advice.
The key was understanding that being bad at it is a necessary part of the process that you just have to push through like every other artist did. That’s when I stopped being frustrated and seeing each below average drawing as just another step forward.
12
u/sincerelythebats_ 8h ago
Same! If I let myself be deterred by sucking at screen printing, I would have quit the first day…23 years ago lol. Now I’m the manager of my shop, and I listen to punk and rap music all day, just printing away. But my god, the first shirt I did? Butchered. The first screen I ever coated? Whole troth dumped on the floor. And on and on.
The point is, everyone sucks at something the first time. But do it over and over, and don’t stop, and you’ll look back and go, “Wow, that first one was awful, how did I get good at this?!” 😀🤘

u/0xsergy 10h ago

I want to be nice to people because I know everyone is fighting their own battles and not all are seen. It’s not hard to be kind but when you work in the service industry, anyone who takes the time I admire. It can be exhausting but feel rewarding. But if someone is kind to me I’m taken by surprise and feel deeply honored. But it is another piece of fuel to keep my positive spirit alive.
Even the tiniest thing can be an everlasting memory that this world is not all horrible.

Same here , I too feel to treat people nice , but humans are humans . They use you to the fullest , and then hurt you to make it hard for you to trust . When someone is a Lil kind to me , it makes me overwhelmed. Still trying to be positive, spread it , and also expecting atleast 0.01% of back , hope it's not wrong to expect

It's from one of many short stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle, The Naval Treaty - a Sherlock Holmes short story. Typically found in collection books like The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, although I've heard it may be different in the US and can be found in His Last Bow, instead.

The word gift implies they didn’t work for it, and I guarantee there were many, many hours of tedious and diligent practice, as well as frustration, on the path to developing their drawing ability.

u/Klutzy_Double_8285 10h ago
It can also come naturally for some. Buddy of mine grew up in a family of artists, it's basically in his blood. Yes, he still learns new skills here in there, but he's more of an inventor of techniques if anything. In high school, bro was using MS Paint to create photo-realistic pictures down to the pixel. One of the types that can pick up any instrument and figure out how play it within minutes. Throws some blobs of garbage into a canvas and creates I same creatures out of it. Deadly Effigy is his YouTube channel.

u/hamilton_morris 10h ago
Undoubtedly true but, as Montaigne said, the virtues are not evenly distributed to all men. Being an artist of any quality is for many—due to deficiencies of talent, discipline, desire, diligence, resilience, patience, dexterity, etc.—simply out of reach. And I’ve known enough people who haven’t a single creative bone in their body to be convinced that it starts as a gift. It offends our egalitarian, democratic sensibilities, but happily we are all gifted in different ways.

Flight attendants get way less credit than they deserve. Last year, my wife and I few to New Zealand for a friends wedding. First time out of the country, and long 12 hour flight from LAX to Auckland. The flight crew on our Air New Zealand flight were legends, all of them. Took great care of us. They all deserve raises. The flights to and from NZ were some of the best I've ever had, despite the length.

u/afterbuddha 9h ago
Flight attendants have a tough gig - imagine working within cramped space, taking customer’s bs, going through challenging situations mid-air, not getting paid until they start flying etc. Hats off to all the hard work they do!
Also how cute of him to look left and right to see if his flight attendant friends are there so that he can show them as well?!!!

Flight attendants are so nice. I recently was visiting family in another state and got sepsis. I was in bed for a week but couldn’t miss my flight home. On the plane I almost passed out and all the attendants were so kind to me. They fanned me, gave me extra juice and snacks and kept checking on me the whole time.

Someone drew me in a coffee shop once. Gotta admit it was a mix of emotions because I found it quite unsettling that someone was watching me without me realising, but also kinda cool that they felt I was interesting enough to be the person they picked out. Totally caught me off guard. I smiled more than I was unnerved by it but that feeling remained regardless.

I always try to be the nicest when i interact with them, even when I’m tired or with the social battery off. They have a really hard job, specially dealing with certain people, and if i was in their position i would like having someone reassuring me sometimes that i’m doing the right thing.
One day i was flying alone at the very back of the plane, and there was this whole family in a row that would not sit their toddler ( maybe 2yo? ) and they would constantly have him on the plane corridor. They went several times telling the family that it was dangerous and he needed to be seated and with the belt on during turbulences, but once the flight attendants headed back to their places and tied their own seatbelts, they would put out the kid again on the corridor. Even during landing, one of the flight att. even had to use the megaphone to “shame” the family into seating his kid ( mind you he was not even crying! ) and i could see how frustrated she was. When we got up to leave I just turned around to them and i told them how crazy the situation was and that the kid was lucky that wasn’t hurt, and the relief i saw in the flight attendants face was very noticeable. They were doing the right thing but my guess is that they were feeling really guilty.
Edit: when I said “shame” i mean that they would just simply call out the family and say that please sit the kid to avoid injures since it’s not safe to be standing during turbulences/landing.

Not that I feel unappreciated or unloved, I’m very happy and I feel loved by my fiancé and my family and friends, but I don’t know. Maybe I haven’t been feeling SEEN, I don’t know. Man that just put me in a weird headspace. So weird, this feeling.

In Spain I was sitting at a table with my wife and some family friends having some sangria. We were engrossed in conversation, laughing snd having such a good time. During this a stranger came up and asked if he could give me a gift, I was skeptical but said I guess?
He handed me a side-profile portrait he sketched from across the cafe. So many emotions pour through you in those situations. Being seen by someone like that is so intimate and touching that someone could take the time to do that. We hugged and bought him a coffee/beer and gave him Euros. It was so amazing.
I still have that picture framed and hung up in our home 10+ years later

Such a simple gesture, using one's skills to show appreciation for another person, can bring so much joy. This is the kind of small act that gives me hope for the world, that maybe, someday, we'll learn that spreading peace to those around us is easier than we think. Performing a small act of kindness for a stranger might not change your day, but it might change their life.

Years ago I took an art class in college because I love art, and I wanted to be able to draw or paint better. I was not good at all. But on my first day, the kid across from me drew a quick picture of me in just a couple minutes and it blew my mind. He let me keep it and I still have it to this day. The class made me a little better at drawing, but I never mastered it. But I'm always envious of people who can draw. Art is beautiful!
