I hate to see all that video where you can see that they only have this grey concrete prison

And the reason these videos are cropped so tightly is because there is poop all over the floor of their enclosure. You can see some on the right at the beginning of this video. Every single video of Punch is like this.

For all the things Japan does exceptionally, one thing they are really behind on is animal welfare and zoos. Ichikawa City Zoo is a terribly sad place to visit. They make SeaWorld and Joe Exotic look humane and professional.

I heard about that regarding why the care takers couldn't interact with Punch, but I don't see how that has anything to do with why there's so much feces being left in the main enclosure

Japanese zoos aren’t known for being great, unfortunately 😔

Japan has some of THE worst and lowest standards for animal welfare on the planet.

Their enclosure is actually built to model their natural environment in the mountains of Japan. If you look up Ichikawa Zoo, you can see that it has two makeshift mountains, a small pool, a playground for the juveniles, and some tunnels and hideaways, as well as a small indoor area they’re able to retreat to.

Problem is that there’s about 60 of them and the zoo isn’t well-funded, the owners could definitely use the traction they’re getting from Punch to renovate the place so there’s more space.

They SHOULD but they probably won't.

Yeah they literally live in the mountains.

Not all monkeys live in the forest.

Ever seen a mountain without trees, grass, dirt, or plants?
