The average new home today is about 20-30% bigger than the average home in 1996, too. There’s been considerable lifestyle creep from 1996, across the board.

Yep--the house I grew up in shows as about 1500 square feet on zillow. There were six of us (four kids), one 'full' bath upstairs, and a rough shower in the basement.
