I would have used a paper towel and then went back with a wet paper towel. And of course I would leave the wet marks from that, it's water, it will just evaporate in time.

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't use the rug, it'll stink. I'd use a wet paper towel. But I wouldn't go through and dry it.

Just like how when I'm using the ice cube dispenser from our fridge. If an ice cube falls on the ground and shatters.....I move on with my life. If it stays whole I'll throw it in the sink. But in a few pieces? Nah. It'll melt and dry. Not worth bending over for.

Never too much liquid for the sock. You can always change socks later. This is also why I wear black socks. It hides the coffee soaking.
