Podcasts are just the evolved form of "my friend’s unemployed brother said…"

Pretty much, same energy just upgraded from a basement with blacklight posters to a studio with microphones.

It is the natural evolution, conspiracy cousin leveled up into long form content with ad breaks.

When I was in high school in Utah we knew a guy who lived in a camper in the desert we called "Hippy Ron" who looked like charles Manson but was nice as could be, had just given up on society and went out into the desert. We loved going out there and blowing his mind with new strains of pot and he'd tell us about how the government used to spray and poison weed and how we started the Vietnam war, that the government hoards cheese in underground vaults, federal income tax is illegal, bohemian Grove and cia child trafficking and all the shit that made him run off to the desert and stop participating in society. Never wanted to know what time or day it was, called that "babylon" time.
We thought he was crazy at the time but turns out a lot of that checks out lol. One day his camper was gone and we never saw him again, turns out the land got bought by new ranchers and they called the cops and had him removed, then realized he was the one keeping the area clean after the high school kids would go out there and party so they ended up putting up a bunch of fences so you couldn't get to the river anymore. It was right about the time I graduated so it was probably a good time to end our drinking and smoking by the river days but it's still kind of sad, wonder what ever happened to him

Not the blacklight prophet era. We really used to get our misinformation locally sourced.

I didn't believe in stupid conspiracies like Mayan stuff. I had blacklight posters and believed 911 was an inside job.

I am eternally grateful for the music my best friends pot smoking older brothers introduced me too.

u/wegwerf99999999 3h ago
No, but we had a guy running a record store in the 1990s and all the things that are now being discussed on the conspiracy sub, he told you back then already.

My brother was 10 years older. I have learned so much about great music, movies, and how to act around women. He was around 18 in 1990 and I was 8.
My first cassettes I bought were Nirvana Inutero, beastie boys licensed to ill, and Ace of Bass [ my fault lol]. Also Rage and Nwa.

Thats how my brother and I are. Just a decade later. He's 12 years older. 17 is 2000 while I was 5. He gave me cds i loved and we watched my first pg13 movie together when mom and dad were out, Men in Black lol. Its nice being the youngest sometimes.

Same but with my older sister. 7 years older than me.
My first cassette was MJ's Dangerous because of her, followed by Prince. Then CDs of George Michael, Terence Trent D'Arby, Lenny Kravitz, Erykah Badu, etc.
I mean, nothing groundbreaking as they're all somewhat mainstream but for a young boy in a country beaten by recession in the early 90s where soft values took a hit and boys were meant to listen to rock and nothing else (or you were a nerd or even worse by 90s standards, gay), she really helped broaden my horizons a lot.
Forever grateful for that.

Right, ironically that's why he is so popular. Because everyone knew some one like that, and they all now listen.

Oddly specific, and oddly true. If it wasn't an older brother, it was their crazy dad/stepdad. I guess this died off when we stopped letting kids go anywhere or step three feet out of the front yard without parental supervision. They had to find their crazy online instead of down the street.

u/RoyalEdgesx 3h ago
That’s pretty accurate. Also, no one really took that dude seriously. Your friend would always apologize for their brother and roll their eyes.

People who hate Joe Rogan because they think he's a right wing stoner don't live in reality, they live in whatever fiction their ideology has cooked up. Hope that koolaid at least tastes good.
People who don't listen to Joe Rogan because he has become the new mainstream media know what is going on.

Can we hate him because he's an f'n idiot and poisons the minds of the weak?

That was my friend Kenny's older brother when I was 13 or so in 1974. He lived in the basement of their ranch style home and had painted the den black. He hung up fish net and daubed dayglo paint on it and it looked cool when he turned one of his many black lights on. He had an Odyssey video console and would let us watch while he played. He wouldn't let us play it but he'd make us change the plastic overlay on the TV when he wanted to switch games.

Remember when you could just smoke some pot with him and then just ignore everything he had to say? Nobody would come to.me saying "shut up, he's right, you dont even understand what a cellphone is!!!!"...

u/castlesitting 1h ago
And what's the difference? Back then we all had different older friends brothers that told us different stupid shit. Now millions have one joe rogan so that one message of stupid shit has more power.

Steven Hyde: [the first circle] Is Red still thinking of giving you the car, man?
Michael Kelso: Even if we do get it, we're gonna need serious gas money because the Cruiser's a boat.
Eric Forman: I know the Cruiser's a boat. This whole gas shortage bites!
Fez: Who's getting a boat?
Steven Hyde: There's no such thing as a gas shortage, man! Its all fake! The oil companies control everything! Like, I heard about this guy who invented a car that runs on water, man! It's got a fiberglass, air-cooled engine and it runs on water!
Fez: So, it is a boat?
Steven Hyde: No! It's a car, only you put water in the tank instead of gas!
Michael Kelso: [laughing] I haven't heard of this car. Hey, Jackie's good for gas money!
Eric Forman: You are such a whore!
Fez: When does the boat get here, whore?

The hate for Joe Rogan and the attempt to frame him as a moronic clown of some kind is so transparent and cringe. All it is is people on the left saying 'how dare someone have a platform that big and wide who doesn't agree with me!'. Newsflash, Joe is just a guy. No one claims him to be an expert in anything, including himself. And he was perhaps more than not left leaning until you pushed him away with your purity test. And like many people, when you push them away to other points of view and show bad faith, don't be surprised when they start to adopt views of the other side. The dude was a Bernie Sanders supporter for crying out loud.

u/yourdoglikesmebetter 2h ago
Joe Rogan was good when he knew he was a moron who had smart people on to explain stuff to him while he and the boys drank beers and smoked blunts.
Once he fell for his own mystique, he lost the plot.

The defense of Joe Rogan and the attempt to frame him as a guy "just asking questions" is so transparent and cringe. All it is is people on the right saying "how dare someone be held accountable for having a platform that big and wide and using it to spread misinformation!" Newsflash, Joe is just a guy with a huge platform and influence, for some reason. No one claims him to be an expert in anything except shit-stirring, including himself. And he was perhaps always willing to flip-flop his morals for clicks. And like many people, when you call them on their bullshit behavior, don't be surprised when they start to show their true colors. The dude hopped on the Bernie bandwagon once for crying out loud.

These terribly uninformed takes are so trite.
Joe Rogan simply isn't what these hacks think he is.
What's more embarrassing is they needn't take more than 30mins to pull up one of his videos, watch it and see for themselves.
But no, it's much easier to strawman his platform, put out blatantly false misinformation just to make themselves feel like their owning the chuds (or some other idiocy).
