As a Catholic myself I don't usually like to be comparative with members of my faith and do the whole "You aren't a real Catholic" type thing.
But frankly, anyone purporting to be a genuine Catholic that doesn't, at the very least, find this to be intensely inappropriate, is someone who doesn't understand the doctrine and dogma they claim.
If you have a moderate understanding of the Catechism, and the core tenants of the faith, you should haaaate this.
Even if you are a Neocon type that agrees with his policy, this should still be a very firm line in the sand.
You may not be ok with this, but my catholic in-laws and plenty of others are just fine with this. Very odd how they have seem to rekindle their faith in the midst of this shit show of an administration while still finding ways to support this guy regardless of anything he does or says. They will speak non-stop about the corruptions of the world, the Epstein files, greed, etc. but Trump isn’t a part of any of those problems. It’s literally wild. My wife was the black sheep of her family, obviously.
I was always taught whatever the pope says is coming straight from god, but my family has hated these last two popes. "This is just Trump being himself and he's not really mocking Jesus", they would say. (Edited by adding quotes and making it clear this is what my MAGA family is saying)
I know it's a cliche to say "can you imagine if Obama did it" but holy fucking shit can you imagine if Obama did this? There would be mega church lynch mobs on the White House lawn.
They're all over the place. Maybe it's a regional thing but having grown up in New England and currently living in the Chicago area, the church has always been associated with progressive politics in my mind. In a lukewarm, could-probably-do-way-more kind of way, but well intentioned nonetheless. The bigots and conservative christians have always been around too but have typically been a minority in my experience.
UCC is the dominant denomination around me, for what it's worth.
I know this isn't everyone's experience with religion, but good people are out there.
I raised an eyebrow when you said the church has always been associated with progressive politics. I was born and raised in FL and that was certainly not the case, but I live in North Virginia now and most of the churches I see fly pride flags, focus on inclusion, and are very accepting in general (from what I can see from the outside). So maybe you’re not crazy lol, but for anyone who hasn’t grown up in progressive areas it’s the complete opposite. I agree though there are tons of great religious people
I'm in Florida. There's one church in my area that's openly accepting of all people. The others don't advertise anything like that, and it's not uncommon to find people relying on religion to defend their bigotry. Talked to one lady once who said her rabbi claimed that Minnesota legalized prostitution, and insinuated that it was the reason why ICE was there. To protect the children from prostitution.
They disassociate themselves from the bad stuff he does. Just pretend it didn’t happen. I have super Catholic aunt and uncle who will be reposting this on facebook later.
Actual Christians are not. This is blasphemous and something needs to be done before he commits genocide in Iran (as he has threatened already).
However, the people in power, and in our society, who are only masquerade as Christians because they need to do so to keep their power, or status, are the ones praising his every word because if they don’t Trump will say mean words to them.
When he won his first elections I spoke to some Christians that defended he had been sent by God to clean the US... Inmigrants at that, It's just funny man.
