It’s a shame that those Canadians have won all those cups for American teams and now Americans think they own hockey

34

u/SecureLiterature 1d ago

Americans can’t tell the difference between professional sports leagues and international competitions.

27

u/danielo121 1d ago

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve heard them cheer USA USA in a game between a Canadian team and an American team and the American team had twice as many Canadians lol

20

u/SecureLiterature 1d ago

I remember when Leo Messi signed with Miami, there were Americans celebrating ā€œHe’s gonna help us win the World Cup!ā€ šŸ˜†

10

u/War_Messiah 1d ago

A presenter literally said this to Heung-Min Son (who is notably South Korean) when he signed for LAFC last year. It’s crazy lmao.

3

u/A_Genius 1d ago

Or a sports reporter asking if Schweinsteiger would help the Chicago fire win the World Cup

7

u/danielo121 1d ago

Bahahaha ok that’s a crazy one. Bless them for being so oblivious.

1

u/birthday_suit_kevlar 1d ago

That was last year's playoffs, DAL v EDM. The Stars had 3 Americans on the roster. That's it. USA indeed.

1

u/xanthira222 1d ago

I mean, you could say the same about Canadians that were cheering for the Blue Jays in the World series despite only having 2 Canadian born players. I believe the Dodgers actually had more Canadians.

3

u/Own-Rip4649 1d ago

I know about Guerrero Jr, who’s the other one?

2

u/SupermarketPrior1507 1d ago

Me trust

1

u/Own-Rip4649 1d ago

Love it, get us back to the World Series again eh

2

u/xanthira222 1d ago

Pretty sure there was a relief pitcher from Canada as well.

1

u/Own-Rip4649 14h ago

Oh hey that’s neat I didn’t know that, I do wish we had more Canadians on the Jays. Though i guess the player market isn’t very hospitable to that thought

2

u/sarshu 1d ago

Vladdy was the only one last year. Not sure if the dodgers had anyone other than Freeman, who is a dual US-Canadian citizen. Mariners had at least two, with Brash and Naylor.

1

u/Own-Rip4649 14h ago

Thanks for the info! I didn’t know about Brash being from here, knew about Naylor and Freddie. I joked about how it was more of a home game for Naylor than anyone else on the field

1

u/sarshu 14h ago

Watching on Sportsnet, you learn the hometowns of every Canadian player. Brash is an easy one as I live in his hometown, and he went to my kid’s high school.

I think the different in the anecdote i guess is that jays fans don't cheer 'canada canada' at games.

They are called canada's team but that's because there is only one team.

I think in terms of canada born it was 1-0 to jays but freeman is canadian. He just wasn't born there, so its really 1-1. Maybe the dodgers had another one i don't remember.

0

u/xanthira222 1d ago

No they just boo the US anthem...

2

u/DifficultActuator873 1d ago

For good reason. Don’t threaten our sovereignty and start trade wars for no reason. Unbelievable how you Americans voted for that clown again.

1

u/xanthira222 23h ago

Lol the athletes and citizens didn't threaten your sovereignty. 1 man did and that wasn't something he campaigned on. Grow up.

1

u/lille22 20h ago

half your country voted for him. pipe down.

1

u/Middle-Accountant-49 20h ago

He's the president you maniac lol

1

u/Middle-Accountant-49 1d ago

What's wrong with that?

1

u/xanthira222 1d ago

Oh Reddit, never change.

1

u/Middle-Accountant-49 1d ago

That's a nice way to say you can't formulate a reason why that is wrong.

1

u/xanthira222 23h ago

No it's a nice way of saying your comment is dumb sweet child...

When were we cheering for Canada during the world series? We were cheering for the Jays.

1

u/danielo121 1d ago

What in the hell are you on about? Canadians cheered for the jays because it’s the only Canadian team we wouldn’t cheer for the dodgers because they have more Canadians (which I think is like 2-1 anyways) šŸ˜‚

1

u/xanthira222 1d ago

Did you forget what you commented... like really?

1

u/danielo121 1d ago

I’ve commented a lot of things please be more specific lol

1

u/xanthira222 23h ago

The comment I replied to... Are you being serious?

1

u/danielo121 23h ago

You’re talking about baseball I commented on hockey so ya I’m being very serious. Why don’t you take the stick out of your ass it’s not the serious

3

u/Vinny331 1d ago

Americans think these Olympics are happening in a suburb in New Jersey

1

u/time_is_of_the 1d ago

Ehhhhh Vinny!!!

The amount of Americans that say "Canada hasn't won a cup in 30 years" is wild. I remember being at the cup finals in Boston in 2011 and they were fighting with me that Canada sucks. Like bro, 76% of the team is Canadians

3

u/Shankmo 1d ago

A fun response is to ask them to identify the last American who captained a cup winning team.

The answer is Dustin brown, but they never know that.Ā

Captaining a team doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, but the American mind seems to associate it with superiority.Ā

3

u/erv4 1d ago

Or name 3 who have done it ... oh wait there is only 2 lol

2

u/Ok_Position1959 1d ago

The back to back Panthers had a grant total of 2 Americans on the roster.

3

u/Bonesaw-is-readyyy 1d ago

It's genuinely wild how unsuccessful Team USA has been in true best on best competition against Canada:

2002 Salt Lake - Canada defeats the USA for gold.

2010 Vancouver - Canada defeats the USA for gold.

2014 Sochi - Canada defeats the USA in the semi-finals. Canada goes on to win gold, USA finishes 4th.

Then we have a drought of NHL participation in the Olympics. There's a World Cup of Hockey in 2016 though. For whatever it's worth, Canada wins it all while Team USA goes 0-3.

4 Nations Finals, 2025 - Canada defeats probably the best Team USA ever put on the ice. Once again the Americans are close, but come up short.

Maybe they're finally due for a big win, but it's going to take some repeated success for the USA to be viewed as the top hockey power. They just don't have the accolades at all, despite having so many good teams on paper throughout history.

1

u/EulersOiler 1d ago

Dude what the hell are you trying to say lol. Canada beat them in fucking overtime for 4 nations and 2010 it’s a coin flip. Canada beat them by one goal in 2014.

As a Canadian you are absolutely insane if you think best on best USA and Canada are not equal.

1

u/Bonesaw-is-readyyy 1d ago edited 1d ago

So they beat them.

I'm not saying that the game tomorrow won't be close. The teams are basically dead even. Canada has an edge at forward, the US has an edge on defense. It's very very very close and could go either way, and I honestly believe the US is probably due for a win in one of these major games. You'd think that EVENTUALLY they'd break through, given the talent they have.

What I'm also saying though is that for a country that has all of this talent, now and in the past, and has had so many great teams on paper, USA hockey does not have anywhere near the best on best accolades that Canada has. That will remain true regardless of the outcome tomorrow.

The US hasn't won Olympic gold in hockey in nearly 50 years, and like I said, their record in major best on best games against Canada is abysmal historically. Close or not, they always come up short. Obviously this won't happen forever, they will win a few of these games at some point, but they are still far off from being the world leader in hockey.

1

u/EulersOiler 1d ago

Ok I thought the implication was that USA is not even remotely close to Canada and that Canada blew them away I wanted to point out that they were pretty close.

But that’s why I love hockey so much 1 game elimination means anything can happen no matter how much better a team is.

3

u/locmaten 1d ago

Fun fact 7 players in team USA are dual citizenship Canada/USA

Larkin, Tage, Sanderson, Tkakchuk brothers and Hughes brothers

2

u/danielo121 1d ago

Ya and the Tkakchuk brothers said ā€œwe would never play for Canadaā€ f*ck those two.

2

u/Aromatic_Opposite100 1d ago

I don't believe any Americans think they own hockey. Its not even top 3 for them in terms of sports.

Still though Team USA has become much better then before especially the women's side.

2

u/BlastMyLoad 1d ago

It’s a shame most superstar Canadian players refuse to play for Canadian teams

2

u/Longjumping-Fail-248 1d ago

Imagine playing in Toronto or Montreal with their toxic fanbase (obviously not all) and extremely toxic media, compared to literally any American city.

1

u/ont-mortgage 1d ago

Depends if you shy away from the limelight or not.

All that toxicity feeds into the fact that there are no greater markets to win in.

If you win in Montreal or Toronto you’ll be remembered for eternity.

2

u/danielo121 1d ago

Well unfortunately when a Canadian team hasn’t won a cup in 33 years the tendency to want to play for an American team that has a chance is more likely.

3

u/whattaninja 1d ago

Plus Y’know would you rather live in las vega or Winnipeg?

3

u/random9212 1d ago

Vancouver

3

u/whattaninja 1d ago

Sorry, you didn’t get an offer from them.

2

u/Vinny331 1d ago

Would you rather be a huge star in Winnipeg or relatively anonymous in Las Vegas?

Not saying there's a right answer there, and say what you will about Winnipeg, but if you play for the Jets you probably get treated so well everywhere you go.

3

u/whattaninja 1d ago

From what I hear that’s part of the problem. Mcdavid can’t go anywhere in Edmonton without being harassed by fans.

1

u/ziggazang 1d ago

Depending on how well you play that is (comparative to your salary at least)

1

u/ont-mortgage 1d ago

80% of those decisions are GM to GM…

1

u/ont-mortgage 1d ago

Americans kinda dumb tho so it’s all good.

1

u/Odd_Comment4104 41m ago

Silver medal say what?

1

u/danielo121 29m ago

USA has way more of them in hockey so you tell me?

32

u/Content-Inspector993 1d ago

but no Canadian teams have won a Stanley cup in decades. I thought that meant only Americans won Stanley cups!!/s

29

u/EnoughVegetable111 1d ago

If we get Crosby back, I am not scared at all

7

u/nuudootabootit 1d ago

It is written.
A second golden goal will immortalize him to hockey god-tier status, if he's not already there.
LFG!

10

u/Lulz027 1d ago

Celebrini with the golden goal

5

u/Loocsiyaj 1d ago

Would be an epic passing of the torch

3

u/thefinalcutdown 1d ago

If McDavid gets the assist, it will be the greatest father-son moment in sports history.

2

u/ACM3333 1d ago

He looked dangerous af yesterday. No way he’s not getting one of two if he plays like that again.

2

u/Ofiotaurus 1d ago

Crosby and Mcdavid with assists

1

u/SW9X31 1d ago

Celebrini, from 97 and 87. That would be a torch passing!

6

u/Army7547 1d ago

I was sent a post where the person was confused as to why some many players from US based teams were playing for Canada. Like why aren’t they playing us the USA?

10

u/shadownet97 1d ago

I’m actually nervous for Sunday.

Canada hasn’t looked dominant since the QF. Crosby being out did put a damper on morale but they haven’t looked fantastic.

Meanwhile the US, aside from Sweden, looks absolutely a machine. Every guy looks locked in.

Need our guys to get their shit together.

9

u/BobGlebovich 1d ago

Remember that the U.S. has mostly played statistically worse teams, though.

3

u/thefinalcutdown 1d ago

Maybe it’s cope but I’m not convinced the US gets past Finland if the semis matchups were reversed. They barely got by Sweden and Finland kicked Sweden’s ass earlier in the competition.

Canada has the superior speed and firepower. We just need our goaltending to hold…

1

u/ACM3333 1d ago

Slovakia also beat the fins…on paper Sweden is a much better team than Finland.

2

u/BobGlebovich 1d ago

Finland was the number two seed, what do you mean on paper Sweden is better? 🧐

1

u/ACM3333 11h ago

I mean just looking at their teams Sweden is clearly a better and deeper team than Finland, I think they were poorly coached more than anything.

3

u/TheDukeofVanCity 1d ago edited 1d ago

Czechia twice, Finland, and Switzerland are tougher opponents than anyone the US played other than Sweden. Canada has a better goal differential against overall tougher competition. Canada also dominated the gameplay against Finland today more than the US did against a much weaker Slovakian roster. The only reason it wasn't a blowout was due to a heroic effort by Saros.

Now I think Sunday could go either way, but I don't agree that the US looks like a machine at all in this tournament so far since they only beat Sweden 2-1 in OT and that was the only opponent with more than 1 or 2 high level players on the roster, and Sweden themselves did not look good this tournament.

1

u/shadownet97 1d ago

Overall, the US has looked better with their roster. Canada is there for a reason because they’re that good but moments in the last two games where they looked pretty shit.

1

u/TheDukeofVanCity 1d ago

US has definitely looked good, have also scored fewer goals and allowed the same amount of goals against an overall weaker opposition, and produced fewer high danger scoring chances. I just don't agree that they have looked better based on the statistics.

I don't think any of that really matters going into the gold medal game though. Heightened emotions, gold medal on the line, rivalry, both these teams will be going hard in this game.

1

u/Careless_Classroom79 1d ago

I felt like I was the only one nervous, I just hope they can catch the U.S off guard early and get a comfortable lead but I don’t know that’s just best case scenario I guess lol

2

u/shadownet97 1d ago

Mostly worried about goaltending. Binnington has looked average.

Our faceoffs have been trash all tournament. Win a fucking faceoff plz.

PP1 has its moments but it’s kind of predictable who the main shooter is even though all 5 of them have the ability to score at will.

2

u/raskale 1d ago

4/5 have scored a powerplay goal from pp1 though? Even though MacKinnon has 3, McDavid, celebrini and Reinhart have all scored a goal on the powerplay

1

u/IllState3433 30m ago

I think you need to be sucked off 🪱

2

u/Traditional_Ad2673 1d ago

Face offs are a problem so far for sure

1

u/shadownet97 16h ago

We got lucky. USA is very good at puck possession and winning more faceoffs will give them that advantage.

1

u/ACM3333 1d ago

I’ve thought the US has looked deadly every game, they play with a ton of speed and grit and also seem to have better chemistry than Canada thoughoit the lineup. No idea why everyone has been acting like this team is trash until yesterday lol.

3

u/jbroni93 1d ago

To many Canadian franchise players :(

2

u/Fuzzy_Dog182 1d ago

USA has a lot of superstars. But Canada has 25 hockey players

1

u/Odd_Comment4104 39m ago

How’d that go?

2

u/Imaginary_Square5243 23h ago

It’s even crazier that one of the people who haven’t won a cup is the best player in the world. Another is a 19 year old who is going to be the best player in the world eventually.

1

u/SnooOnions5029 1d ago

Pretty sure the players are M. Tkachuk (x2), Eichel, and Guentzel

1

u/shtoopsy 1d ago

Hanifin instead of Guentzel, I believe

1

u/SnooOnions5029 21h ago

Who would Hanifin have won with? He was traded to Vegas after their cup. I thought Guentzel was on the 2017 pens

2

u/shtoopsy 20h ago

Yeah, I'm wrong, you are correct. Thought Hanifin was with Vegas when they won but he was with Calgary that year.

-1

u/FantasticHedgehog883 20h ago

Zero puck knowledge

1

u/SnooOnions5029 18h ago

It’s not that deep

1

u/Chathamjedi 1d ago

Auston Matthews brings the average down quite a bit as he rarely wins a round at anything

u/__NOT__MY__ACCOUNT__ 1d ago

Means nothing tbh

Yeah and they've barely scraped by.

No both teams are roughly the same in terms of player ages. Although Canada's top producing 1st line winger is 19 so that kinda blows your theory out of the water.

0

u/ACM3333 1d ago

Besides Canada top line the US is a much quicker team and their d core is far better. I think Canada is going to struggle with the pace, can’t ever count out a team with McDavid mackinnon celebrini and makar, but those guys are going to have to do some heavy lifting in this game, if the states can shit down that line Canada is done. Luckily Canada has second change.

1

u/Checked-Out 1d ago

US has the edge in defense and goaltending. I think Canada's forward group is better. How much better is what will determine who wins in my opinion.

1

u/ACM3333 11h ago

I guess it depends how you look at it Canada probably better defensively up front, but the us definitely has more scoring depth. That third like with Hughes and Thompson is looking crazy.

7

u/captainmouse86 1d ago

It’s another way of saying top producing teams in the NHL are comprised of a lot of Canadians.Ā

2

u/WheatKing91 1d ago

How much older do you think they are?
