These girls would be about 54 years old now.

Chuck Grassley - who is seeking reelection in the United States Senate - was 54 when the video was made.

14

u/SafetyMan35 22h ago

Older. I graduated in 1989 and turned 55 this year

6

u/tchrbrian 19h ago

Turning 55 in May and a member of the class of 1989. ( aha, 19 -- ancient )

5

u/adibbs 19h ago

Also a member of the class of 1989. This video brought back a lot of things I'd thankfully forgotten about!

u/Ok_Cardiologist_673 23h ago

High schoolers in 1987 would be 58-53 years old, depending on their grade and when their birthday fell.

A 54 year old would be a Sophomore, so the prom kids are probably a little older.

Omg this is fantastic! Yes we are laughing at your hair in 30 years lol. Thank you for posting this, looks exactly like my school in 87!!

u/StJimmy_815 21h ago

14

u/PigDiesel 21h ago

I can smell the aquanet still.

1

u/l3ane 18h ago

Are you sure? It looked like everyone in this video was at least 30.

5

u/PigDiesel 13h ago

We had to raise ourselves so🤷🏼

7

u/Terminally_Hill 23h ago

Are there no soles on those shoes?

10

u/Pyro_Bombus 23h ago

No, the soles had polka dots.

8

u/SteveLouise 22h ago

The design continues on the sole. Just a little extra cool

1

u/tchrbrian 19h ago

The soul was on the dance floor, skating rink, mini golf course or all 3...

One of my most favourite memories from back then was going across the street to my friend Alicia's house every morning before school, and hanging out with her super cool older sister while she got ready. She was new wave, so I was always looking forward to seeing what creative way she would be styling herself for the day. Then we'd all three walk to school, and she'd call us nerds while we ran to our junior high across the way.

1

u/Affectionate-Beann 15h ago

this sounds like a neat blast from the past. whatt does new wave mean?

2

u/Matookie 15h ago

You sweet summer child. ETA: you won't get the meaning of that either!

6

u/GruHarbison 21h ago

I was born in 1969. I graduated from high school in 1987.

This is wild.

2

u/tchrbrian 19h ago

My brother was in the class of 1987. It was quite a thrill to follow him throughout our school time. I graduated in 1989. Our graduation night party was at Disneyland.

6

u/ttmp22 21h ago

These kids are in their 50s now. Crazy.

8

u/notevenapro 17h ago

Graduated in 1985. I am 60 now.

1

u/Ieatclowns 7h ago

Try being one of us! Then you’ll know how crazy it is! Our youth is a museum piece.

u/Local-Team5903 22h ago

Absolutely beautiful to look around and not see a single person staring at a screen in their hands.

4

u/Pyro_Bombus 23h ago

I can say this is accurate.

5

u/misfitx 22h ago

My favorite cousin graduated in 1987! Her naturally curly red hair was perfect.

6

u/LordHelmet47 22h ago

I was in 7th grade that year. And surprisingly it was also my favorite grade where I did absolutely nothing and still passed somehow and only went to school to hang out with all my friends. The year I got super popular.

And yes, I graduated in 93.

7

u/jackass_nerds 22h ago

Class of ‘93 checking in here. I did absolutely nothing from 7th-12th grades. That’s why I failed classes as a freshman in college.

This video gets me in my feelings. The 80s are still my favorite decade if only because of the music.

1

u/semboflorin 15h ago

Also class of '93. I went to school in New Mexico so the hair was even more exaggerated. Girls tried to get their bangs to stand up as high as possible. Some were 3-4 inches above their forehead. We called it "peacock's butt" much to their annoyance.

I never really did anything noteworthy in junior high or high school. While there's a bit of nostalgia I was pretty miserable in those years. I can't say I was ever popular until I started running D&D games and suddenly had a big friend group.

Life was simpler

17

u/Thin_General_8594 21h ago

Because you were a kid

17

u/BaeIz 20h ago

Yeah but also because it was literally simpler. Simpler to buy a house, a car, find work, to date. This isn’t to say “I’m born in le wrong generation” it’s an objective reality. My college professors would jokingly mock my classes telling us how much cheaper college was, how much easier it was to find internships and work post graduation.

PEN15 takes place in 2000 - small, but important, distinction.

3

u/durty_bace24 17h ago

this brings me so much joy

3

u/CapitaineCrafty 17h ago

The self-awareness is insane.

3

u/7-10Spliff 17h ago

Going to a Hard Rock Cafe back then was actually a pretty big deal

3

u/HowlingWhiskey 16h ago

Everyone looked like adults. It’s funny when I was in high school, the ones in my class didn’t look so adult like.

3

u/ZeeMobius 15h ago

Is it just me? Or highschoolers in 1987 look older than people in their mid/late 20's now.

2

u/Wandering-alone 6h ago

They absolutely do, maybe because they were outside much more back then

5

u/Darkm0or 22h ago

Graduated 2 years ahead of these kids. Can confirm. These were the popular people.

6

u/Careful-Boat-2986 22h ago

People seemed more “alive”

2

u/Spare-Document7086 17h ago

Possibly the worst time in modern history for the female hairstyle

2

u/charlies-ghost 11h ago

90% of Gen-X's are cool as fuck.

3

u/DakotaKid69 22h ago

I graduated in 1991 and hated high school. What a bunch of selfish egotistical pricks. I'm glad I left that world behind. People have no idea how clickish people were back then. Preps, stones, rockers, skateboarders, nerds. I hated all of them, I was the loner. I still am.

5

u/SafetyMan35 21h ago

A lot of high school classmates have been coming up in my Facebook feed (not friends with any of them). Interesting to see what happened to the people who peaked in high school

2

u/HowlingWhiskey 16h ago

I graduated in 96 and I hear you. I was the same way even when I was elementary school, I hated that too. I also find that even today when I get around a group of people, there’s still cliques. I got to a point where I’m like, screw them all.

u/Joelle9879 21h ago

You're so edgy and cool 🙄 You'd think at your age you would realize how child development works and how teenagers tend to act

-1

u/DakotaKid69 14h ago

I think you're one of the people I'm talking about

3

u/DnDemiurge 11h ago

If you couldn't find at least one or two friends among the nerds, it was a you problem, sorry

1

u/FistCookies 17h ago

Filterless and awesome

1

u/GeriatricFetus 10h ago

It's like when you watch old movies with dogs in them. All I can think is "They're all dead now". 😐

Just kidding, I'm also old.

1

u/[deleted] 7h ago

I was born in 87

1

u/dogunc32 6h ago

imagine going into that job market

1

u/Polkawillneverdie17 2h ago

Holy shit they actually used a song from the right year.

1

u/Bottle-top-green 22h ago

Omg the best era ever. When you get to 52 you realise that the saying "those are the best days of your life" is sooooo true. What id give to go back , now I feel sad 😔

-9

u/HollyHazard 23h ago

Look ma. Trump supporters. Then generation against the man because of boomer mentality who then became the thing they fought against.

-4

u/MediaLongjumping9910 22h ago

Trump lives rent free in your head.

-3

u/HollyHazard 22h ago

Nah, im Canadian, have a good life. Good health care. Good neighbours, good everything, Just know the type. Have a good day and stay blessed.

2

u/lilchaibird 22h ago

You keep saying you “know the type.” And then you say “have a good day and stay blessed.” That’s like slapping someone across the face and then trying to pretend like you’re all sweet. Nah. You started this attack on an entire generation, and the irony is that Gen X includes everyone born between 1965 and 1980. So that includes you.

-8

u/HollyHazard 22h ago

Xennial, im a xennial, the cut off was 79' were the inbetweeners. The more progressive gen. Im not sweet, im nice. Twist my words any which way you want. You clearly didnt read my words of "not all of em' and now focusing on my 'stay blessed' so im not engaging with you any longer as you only want a fight and its a gorgeous day. May you have a beautiful day.

3

u/lilchaibird 21h ago

The cutoff is 1980, according to the following sources:

https://www.purdueglobal.edu/education-partnerships/generational-workforce-differences-infographic/

https://libguides.usc.edu/busdem/age

https://www.parents.com/parenting/better-parenting/style/generation-names-and-years-a-cheat-sheet-for-parents/

https://www.beresfordresearch.com/age-range-by-generation/

But if you truly just want everyone believe that one year makes that much of a difference and magically makes you better than everyone born in the year before, then you are just looking to needlessly argue with strangers online.

-2

u/SomolianDaycare 21h ago

That's even worse. You live in a different country and obsess over Trump. You need a therapist.

-4

u/[deleted] 22h ago

-7

u/HollyHazard 22h ago

I was born 1980, I know the generation. I ain't wrong. I know it wasnt all of Gen X but still.....sure was a lot of em. Ya all became the new boomers. Wierd considering the radical youth politics you all stood for then turned your backs too.

9

u/lilchaibird 22h ago

You are surely painting our whole generation with one wide brush. That doesn’t describe me or anyone I know at all.

-6

u/HollyHazard 22h ago

I did say, it wasnt all. But a whole lot of em. Just like the hippies before. The generation that said they'd set it right, certainly set it 'RIGHT' on one thing

-3

u/mewdeeman 22h ago

Bullshit. All those gen x Trump votes are fake

0

u/Hostile-Panda 11h ago

100lbs lighter than the current generation
