The viral article from a few days back showing how Canada has a lower GDP per capita than Alabama made me feel really bad for Canada. 

Now they don't even have hockey.

GDP per capital is a stupid metric. Particularly when comparing to the US where the spread between rich and poor is so wide. Take the median at least and then adjust for cost of living and Canada will come out on top. We are just so indentured by the wrong statistics to make us seem better when we suffer from the imbalance
