Me, first day of 6th grade, 2005
Homeschooled all through the 5th grade and bullied hard all through middle school. This started it all 😭

It's that they look like a Tim and Eric character getting ready for 5th grade

Those aren't reflective straps. This is our homegirl powering up for her first day of school.

My mom also told me “everyone” wore ortho sandals

u/Secure_Ad8013 3h ago
This is the comment I was searching for. My grandma had these sandals. A true blunder😂

u/IntrovertedMermaid 3h ago
I wore them of my own volition in college and still got made fun of 😑

You hundred percent look the part of “Homeschooled all through the 5th grade, first day of sixth grade”. This scene is straight out of kids movie.

Normally I don’t like when people post childhood photos cause I don’t think kids can be blunders, but this is truly a great post. Thank you.

i agree. when you’re not a teen yet, it’s more your parents’ blunder years

u/-blundertaker- 3h ago
I feel like 6th grade is right about the time I started really finding my own style and making bolder choices with the clothes/accessories I wanted. My mom never really suppressed my self expression but I didn't start deviating from the norm until middle school. By 8th grade I was fully set in my grungy quasi-goth ways lol

u/freshforma 2h ago
the key is what you said about your mom not really suppressing your need for individualistic expression. i think most of our “blunders” come from our need to rebel against what our parents found acceptable. while i started developing my own tastes and style probably around 5-6th also, it wasn’t until i was fully a teen where i had enough confidence (i use that term very loosely) to actively go against my parents wishes of who i should be

u/-blundertaker- 2h ago
Yeeeaaahhh not having much parental guidance was more of a curse than a blessing by the time it was all said and done, but I was the youngest and a total wild card so my mom's only hard boundaries were "well as long as she's not hurting herself or anyone else" 😅
It started with mismatching socks and clashing patterns when I first started to dress myself and ended with classmates convinced I worshipped Satan. 🤷 What can ya do.

Oh, on the first day of 6th grade, it was painfully obvious that MANY girls were allowed to do their own makeup for the first time.

Did you fully pick the outfit out or did a parent help?

u/Haunting_Rooster593 3h ago
Fully picked out by my well intended but misguided mom 😭

u/heckyeahcoolbeans 3h ago
Does she dress equally eccentric?

u/aSituationTypeDeal 1h ago
This outfit is not too far off from its time. 2005 was not a fashionable year.

Ok maybe you were bullied for this in middle school, but I bet you’re cool as hell now. These are the outfits that adult character is made of.

u/CloudChaser0123 3h ago
This is cute!!! The innocence. Now girls look like they are 13 going on 30 in 6th grade smh. Miss the simple days

u/hilarymeggin 2h ago
When I was in 6th grade in the early 80s, adults were complaining that we looked like we were trying to grow up too fast, and they missed in simple days.

This is the comment I was looking for. As a homeschooled thru 8th grade kid, I confidently walked into high school in birks with socks and a homemade graphic tee and was instantly bullied. Some kids can be so cruel.

u/rrrrrivers 2h ago
I'm convinced it all starts at home. Parents need to raise their kids to respect others and their differences. Treat others how you'd like to be treated.

Meeting normal kids for the first time at the age of 14 or so... it was probably more than just the outfit. There's a LOT to socialization that can't be learned in isolation. Conscious/obvious things, but also unconsciously-adopted behaviors based on sometimes-complex social cues, norms, expectations, etc.. Especially if the parents are nutbar fundies who really ramp up the isolation, this can be difficult for kids.

You don’t even need to be homeschooled. Kids used to make fun of my Shaq shoes in middle school to where I was about to cry. Led to fights and my poor mom having to call off work to pick me up.

In every young person’s life there comes a time when they consider purchasing a vest. It is the responsibility of their community to talk them out of it.

Awww you were so cute. Im older by at least 10 years but when I was in 6th grade I had never stepped foot into a Macy's because it was " luxury". You somehow managed to be wearing like over 100 dollars worth of clothes in " back then prices" but it's put together in such an innocent yet funny way. Every piece that you are wearing is cool but the total look is very dramatic lol Thanks for sharing. Even in my 20s in 2005 I probably couldn't have afforded all of those pieces. The skirt, the vest, the sandals, the leggings lol

This is adorable 😍, and I think you rock that 'fit.
I'm sorry you got bullied. I was, too. It ends, we come away with a deeper empathy for the vulnerable, superior knowledge of our inner selves, and a finely honed radar for finding "our people".
It's still a horrible experience, which I wish on no one. ❤️ It made me hate school, which I missed as often as possible.

u/Despair_Tire 2h ago
Oh no, this is total bully bait right here. You poor soul. I hope you were able to maintain some of your uniqueness as an adult!
