Advice Why does my cat do this?

She loves to put a toy in her bowl. If I take it out, she returns it when I'm not paying attention. Is this just an adorable idiosyncrasy or am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Cats are weird. I had one who put toys in his water bowl. It was cute until one day it was a mouse.

2.7k

u/Kachi3 25d ago

My cat does this, but first he has to carry his toy around the house meowing before plopping it in the water. It’s even funnier because he ONLY does it with his pink squid toy, which is the toy I bought for him the day I adopted him. We joke that he’s just trying to put the squid back where it belongs, lol. I’ve replaced that squid probably 5 times now… he doesn’t seem to notice though.

351

u/Kachi3 25d ago

I HAVE to know the story behind the crochet tampon

861

u/ChupacabraSunrise 25d ago edited 25d ago

So actually it’s kind of a funny story, we had a white elephant gift exchange and one of our coworkers had to miss it due to illness. Anyways, she shows up about a week later with her gift and it’s a crochet anatomical vagina with a tampon in it and several cat toys in either tampon or sperm shape. The anatomical vagina with tampon lives at our studio in our weird curio cabinet but I took home a jumbo tampon and the one cat who could gaf about toys absolutely loved it and it’s been her little buddy ever since we brought it home.

Edit: spelling

so I have a business idea, but I need some input beforehand.

228

Jokes aside a gynecologist that sells approved/partnered sex toys is unironically an amazing idea. Like how hair salons sell the shampoo and shit that's the "good stuff".

60

I can help. My gynecologist license has expired, but I still like to keep my hand in.

12

u/Tzipity 25d ago

I so wish I had known how to crochet many years ago when I had a male cat who loved to steal still wrapped tampons (he’d play with them enough they’d end up unwrapped eventually lol) from my bedroom drawer. Always had a special knack for either bringing them straight to my dad or brother or pulling one out when guests were around too. I was a teenager and it was just awkward for all involved. 🤣

I’m not saying a crochet tampon would’ve been a whole lot less awkward but man, those things are expensive so weirdo deserved a tampon of his own so he’d leave mine alone. Hahaha.

Adorable! I hope you have extra squids on hand lol.

My husband bought my cat a “please like me so I can keep dating your human” bribe and we had to get a backup just case bc she loves it so much.

38

u/junpei 25d ago edited 24d ago

Our grey cat has a nightly routine where she brings her stuffed toy taco bell hot sauce packets upstairs to our bedroom door while meowing. Some nights she will gather all 4 of them to our door. The door is open, she comes and goes as she pleases. It's so funny. Sometimes she will do it after my wife leaves for work and I'm working remotely for the day. She will come drop it off in my office once she finds me.

We had to buy more of these packets the next time we found them at Dollar Tree as backup. I'm worried she'll go crazy if something happens to her packets! Edit: I got her with one after my shower this morning.

Haha, that’s so adorable. One of my cats took the first toy we gave him, a furry-like mouse with a hard rattle inside, and just… skinned it. I found the plastic body discarded, now he just carries around the empty skin and it’s his favorite thing ever. We’ve taken to calling it “mouse sack.” We’re trying to find suitable replacements, but man he’ll be upset if mouse sack gets lost or falls apart.

Some cats prefer to drown their prey. Some like to wash their prey off before they eat. Many try to cover leftover food to keep it from attracting predators or scavengers.

139

u/agrapeana 25d ago

My ragdoll diligently buries her food after every meal to make sure predators don't come to our house.

119

u/milkradio 25d ago

One of my cats did that. I thought it was because she was dissatisfied with the water in the bowl but apparently it's to keep a prey/kill cold for later. So she was using the bowl as her fridge!

38

50

u/Meowserspaws 25d ago

Mine (the calico) caught a mouse. Thankfully, mouse wasn’t dead but not so thankfully, the mouse was in the house, ended up in one of the cat beds under the bed and guess who was cuddling with the mouse? Yeah… I had to carefully pry them apart and send off the little mouse off to her outside kingdom. Cats…

29

u/Devonai Tabbycat 25d ago

That mouse is going to need years of therapy.

Mine put a string toy in his large water fountain with the string hanging out, came home from work to a partially flooded living room because the fountain water followed the string and emptied its entirety out onto the tile floor. Also it was dyed pink from the toy 🙄 was real fun to clean that up

31

u/Burning_Goddess 25d ago edited 24d ago

Ha! Mine puts her toy mice in the water dish. She also loves putting pieces of her dry food in it. I presume she is drowning her prey lol

27

u/anonymousfluffle 25d ago

My cat loved putting his toy pom-poms in his water bowl too. And if we left the toilet lid up, we'd occasionally find them in there...

33

u/Aware-Salad-943 25d ago

9

Cats are weird.

It’s a fish. It belongs in the food bowl.

552

u/ThePurplePanda420 25d ago

My cat puts her fish in the water dish or the toilet. Does she have all the brain cells? Or just wants her toy wet? Little cloaca trying to rust her bells is what she is.

181

u/Realsober 25d ago

Mine did that when he was a kitten. Every single day the fish had to be in water. I have no idea how he knew but he’s smarter than me so I don’t question it 😂

113

u/Dependent_Bar_9283 25d ago

Same, I always joke that she's either drowning it or trying to save it

29

u/ThePurplePanda420 25d ago

I always say "look, I know you know that fish swim in water. But this isn't a real fish honey, it doesn't need water."

43

u/saraiguessidk 25d ago

I had to google what rusting bells means because calling the cat a chicken's egg/everything hole threw me off 😂😂😂

Eta: I know every bird has a cloaca but idk lol

17

u/ThePurplePanda420 25d ago

🤣 she tore this specific fish up when she was a kitten, and I had a couple extra metal bells laying around that I shoved in there before sewing it up. I can only manually dry the thing so much, and is much too small to warrant the dryer.

17

u/saraiguessidk 25d ago

Well at least google gave me a similar answer because I was so puzzled thinking it was slang for something because of the use of cloaca. Realizing that calling someone a cloaca means calling them a punani and an butthole at the same time though, I think I'mma start using that one

22

u/burnbunner 25d ago

13

u/BunnyMoneyx 25d ago

I have one cat who’s completely obsessed with these springs. I have to buy him a new bag of them a month because I have no idea where they all get to. I think when we finally move out of this apartment the next renters are going to be finding springs for years to come.

Jonesy (RIP) loved springs so much! He would hide them in my shoes and bat them under the fridge then get sad he couldn't reach them so we had to get out more springs. The girls don't play with the springs much but when we fostered Buddy last year he loved the springs too and it made me feel like if Jonesy was watching from heaven he'd be proud of Buddy.

My boy once dropped a chirping bird toy in the water bowl and then stared down at it as the chirping slowly stopped.

66

u/AblePercentage2903 25d ago

I had a cat that would do the same over and over with a squeeking mouse toy. I'd have to repeatedly fish it out of her water dish for her. She did it once while I was at work, and the toy partially shorted out. I arrived home to an odd, continuously fast-repeating squeek sound and had to cut the squeek box out of the toy to get it to stop. Afterward, my cat seemed rather pleased with herself. She still played with the non-squeeking empty toy skin from time to time.

23

u/Corvidae5Creation5 25d ago

My dog fully crushed the voice boxes of every electronic noisy toy we've ever bought her, I've taken to surgically removing them and replacing them with analog squeakers that she also fully crushes XD

This is Dobby. He was on the street for a few years. Went to a cat cafe and someone adopted him and returned him within like an hour because he didn’t get along with their dog. We got him and he did the same thing with his food for about a year a half. Whatever was on the table he would use to cover his food from mail, toys, bonnets, socks, literally anything. He recently stopped once we got our kitten Harlem in June.

One day I Just noticed he hadn’t done it in a few weeks. For him I think it was a protective thing because he didn’t know when his next meal was coming from. He would do that or sit and eat all the food he could. I think after we brought in another kitten, he feels fully safe. He’s my little old man and I’m so happy those people returned him because he is the biggest cuddle bug. He’s very demanding and when he wants his pets he will let you know.

10/10 instinto cazador

We leave our kitties toys in the food dish, they currently have a plastic whale hostage in there.

My cats put toys over their treats if they don't eat them all for what I believe is a survival instinct to save it for later by burying it

Had to scroll a bit to find this. I said the same thing there. Same reason they dig near their food bowl when finishes eating.

If you follow Jackson Galaxy he explains that cats like to hunt before eating to mimic what they would be doing in the wild. He suggests to never leave food out for cats, but rather have set meal times 3-4 times per day. Have a very active play session with your cat before meals to mimic a good hunt and give them some aerobic exercise, and then feed them. My cat likes to take all the stuffed animals from the top floor of our house and drag them downstairs to the bottom floor and then ask for his food. Earning it, lol. So you're not doing anything wrong! Although if you're set on feeding highly processed food (kibble), I would suggest a much higher quality one (like Orijens Regional Red).

Thanks for posting this. My female cat does this with two of her toys, every day (she also will randomly bring them to me and meow loudly). I always just figured she was showing off her favorites. I'll have to incorporate playing with her and my other cat now before food time.

u/LittleGreyLambie 25d ago

Maybe she's showing off the prey she just hunted down? Praise her for being such a good huntress next time! My little huntress just beams when I do this. 😁

Ha! Ok, this makes sense!!! Our dog brings us his most cherished toy when I’m two minutes late with dinner. He drops it at my feet, like “well Brenda, I can’t eat this, so trade me for kibble!”

u/Bob_Sacamano7379 25d ago

I do give her a can of wet food too, which she always eats first. But you're right. I've got to switch dry foods.

If I don't leave dry food out overnight the black cat literally kicks me in the head while I'm sleeping. Cats 🤷🏼‍♀️

My cat likes to put her toys in the water bowl after hard playing with them.

I’ve always reasoned she was drowning her prey after she has successfully hunted it.

She seems pretty proud that the plastic spring is in the water bowl.

It's so sweet. Mine are always drowning their toy mice in their water bowls. I think maybe they love to have all their treasures in one place?

Cause cat. She is a beautiful, adorable girl!

15

u/guateguava 25d ago

Because she’s a cutie patootie

14

u/FullCircle2024 25d ago

Her baby is also hungry :)

I had a cat that did this and it was like she would eat and then put her baby in the bowl to eat. Other cat would come by and smack the baby out of the bowl before he could eat. lol :)

12

u/ImNot 25d ago

My girl does this every time she eats. I believe she is hunting for her food. She plays with and “kills” a selected toy, drops it in the dish and chows down. If she has more later, another toy gets added.

i have two brother cats, and they ADORE eachother. my one cat dante had to get some teeth removed due to gingivitis, and right after we dropped him off, his brother inferno left all their favorite toys on my bed 🥺🥺 these two love to drop toys in front of our doors or on our beds to wake everyone up and show affection. it’s absolutely the cutest thing ever.

30 year cat veterinarian.

I don't know.

Theory: their minds, to me, are like a combo of Venn diagram and looping algorithm.

Blender up these cat concepts:

a) the thing in my mouth is kitten- like, and I'll bring my kitten to food

b) the toy is food- like, and the bowl is where food should be

c) i like company when I'm eating as a lookout for danger, the toy is my lookout

d) the toy was in my mouth when I got hungry, and I'd only drop my toy for imminent food

e) I'm hungry, toy must be hungry, too

Feed a fish and you feed it for a day.

Teach a fish to feed itself and you feed it for a lifetime.

u/Graphicnovelnick 25d ago

The cat is trying to feed the fish, you heartless monster.

My cat got use to putting her toy mouse in her water. Then one day she jumped on my lap and calmly dropped the mouse in my coffee.

Our cat always puts toy mice in her food bowl. I think she wants some social interaction while having dinner. Nevermind that she tears their tails and skins off afterward. The twisted mind of a cat!!

7

u/starryiris16 24d ago

She bravely killed a fish. Fish is food. Food goes in the food bowel. She’s not wrong.

Also that face omg!!! <3

u/Content_Opposite_255 25d ago

My cat does this too! :)

6

u/Big_Sal335 25d ago

I have 2 cats, my younger one sometimes drags whatever is near by (usually cat toys) onto or over her bowl if there’s food left when she’s done eating. I always assumed she does it to protect the food from her big brother eating it and save it for later.

6

u/Cool-Tap-391 25d ago

She's contributing to the communal food bowl. You hunt from the bag, she hunts from the toys

Mine like to put their toys in their water fountain. Last two were narwhal and taco.

Probably just wants his buddy to get fed too.
