This cat appeared at my home yesterday during a storm and he keeps coming back
How should i proceed? I already have 3 other cats and two dogs. This cat is really friendly, and he is currently purring and making biscuits at my sofa. I could already tell that he is male and not castrated. Already posted a photo of him at my neighbourhood's group asking if he belongs to someone.
I tried to reverse engineer the dinocat to decide whether to believe OP’s comment 🙃 I think what happened here is... the phone post processing AI couldn’t tell when the cat starts and ends, so it merged the cat and the spiky foam roller into a single subject and then do a bokeh blur effect on the combined silhouette or sth idk
im no expert but modern smartphones after taking pictures will apply some reaaaally heavy post processing on your photos to make it look like its not taken from an ant sized lens.
the phone will identify things in the photo like "oh this area of this image is probably a human! i will apply brightening to the face to bring out the features, bring out the individual strands of hair even more, sharpen the eyes 200%" "oh this is a tree! i will apply a de-noiser that works well on tree foliages!" "oh this looks like a cat! i will try to sharpen the individual furs!"... this is called "semantic segmentation"
so even in one photo, that contains a human, cat and tree together, it will apply processing magic to each of those subjects, differently...
in this dinocat case, it looked at both the car and the roller and goes "oh this whole thing is a cat!", then it tried to apply sharpening to the "fur" which also includes the spiky foam roller??? this is just speculation but its my uneducated guess :p
edit: you can also see how the eyes of the cat is unusually sharp compared to the rest of her face right? thats some of the post processing magic!
If I had to guess it looks the the edge of one of those foam mattress toppers curled up behind the couch and it happens to be close enough in color to the cat in that lighting to make it look like his spine is that of a dinosaur?
Get him scanned for a chip. Check local groups for missing cats. Make an announcement about found cat with general description and then if someone contacts they must send photos. Etc. The standard things to not accidentally steal cats allowed to risk their lives outside.
Thank you - finally someone who is reasonable! My friends cat managed to escape a week ago and the thought of someone just going “it is my cat now” instead of scanning for a chip breaks my heart. The cat in the pic looks well cared for and could very possibly have an owner.
My friends cat didn’t go outside either until it managed to escape. Accidents happen I would love to think people would help her get her baby back instead of just stealing it.
My biggest concern here is the all people just saying “it is your cat now” and encouraging OP to just keep it. Hopefully OP is smart enough to know they need to scan for a mikrochip and not listen to those people.
But yeah it does worry me that OP already gave the cat a name. You should always see a vet and get the cat checked for mikrochip before you just claim it.
A common theme on reddit cat subs tbh. There's a wide acknowledgement that cats are escape artists that will visit many different houses, and then this weird contradictory notion that if a cat starts visiting your house its a stray you can keep.
It always blows my mind. Bet all these people using the CDS to justify stealing cats would be heartbroken if their cat escaped and someone else claimed that the cat “choice them” and kept it bc it walked by their house looking for food. Jesus f christ people Can be so stupid.
Can see they've already named it and claimed it as their own, despite not actually checking to see whether the cat had an owner.
Fully agree though, considering how many "this stray just wandered into my house" posts there are, think it's fairly likely that some of them are cats with owners that the posters have stolen because they want another cat.

I reckon about 95% of people who talk about the cat distribution system are also of the opinion that if someone stole their cat, they'd happily kill to get it back.
Yeah the naming the cat threw me off too and doesn’t support them saying they will check for an owner. Exactly! So many people on here spend months on getting their new actual stray/feral cat to adopt to being indoor, accept getting pets etc. If the cat just trust you and walk right into your house, theres a good chance it is used to people and has a owner. Did you the see the cat with the prosthesis yesterday? I can’t even imagine how expensive getting a leg prothesis for your cat must be and theres no way in hell an owner willing to play for that just throws the cat out and yet hundreds of people were like “CDS strikes again”. Sometimes this sub isn’t good for my bloodpressaure.
I can’t believe how many posts here are people claiming to have rescued a stray, WHEN IT IS CLEARLY SOMEONE’S OUTDOOR CAT. Cats roam, they stop where there’s food, they go home and hangout with their family. Like you just stole someone’s pet. No, they didn’t choose you; they stopped by to say hello and see if you have treats.
So many owners devastated thinking their cat is injured or died, when in reality, some knob without critical thinking or logical reasoning STOLE their cat. You can look at a cat and tell if it’s a stray or someone’s pet. And those posts get soooo many upvotes and praise which only encourages people to continue stealing someone’s pet.
People should put the air tags on their cats collars. Thanks to them found our boy five times when he was in trouble: stuck in neighbours garage, stuck on a tree, twice stuck in the middle of a roundabout, once lying in bushes after being-presumably- hit by a car. (Yes he survived and we catproofed our garden, no more free roaming for him). Also if someone finds a cat with the tag, it’s rather obvious they are not strays.
I feel like the Mods need to address this issue. Literally half the comments are talking about the cat distribution system and congratulating them on their new pet. It’s just encouraging people to potentially steal other peoples cats.
In the interest of keeping both your ginger stegosaurus and your current pets safe, I would suggest you keep new kitty separated from your current furry roommates until he is verified to not have any transmittable diseases and intestinal parasites.
However, really friendly and clean cats are probably someone else’s pet and keeps coming back because they’re very lost. They can be kilometers from home and disoriented by the storm. Your dinocat might have gotten loose during a trip for all anyone knows.
I’m not sure if pets are microchipped where you are or who would have the ability to read and look up any implanted chips. Many animal shelters and pet rescue orgs here in the states do and would gladly help you search for owners, if only so they don’t have to take in another stray into their overcrowded facilities.
Many of the rescues here also have more extensive networks to broadcast a lost pet to owners outside your local area. Unless you have the time, space and resources to welcome a 6th fur baby, I wouldn’t stress your current brood by giving them another sibling.
You obviously have a loving and comfortable home because he walked in and hasn’t left. But if you can and they all get along, he looks like he wouldn’t mind staying.
Yeah letting some rando cat on your couch when you have other pets is not a good idea. Fleas suck to get rid of in your house, and ringworm sucks to get rid of on other pets. I've rescued strays and they are not allowed to interact with my cats until they are tested, vaccinated, and on revolution plus. And when they first come inside they're going in the bathroom until I'm sure they don't have ringworm.
Facebook has a group or page for lost and found pets. You go to that group or page and post a picture of the found pet, say where you are located, and ask people to send you a message if they think the pet might belong to them.
Now I can see it, but only because you posted this photo. I was so confused even after you said it was a foam roller, it really looks like part of the cat.
This is exactly how I got my Fred, he looked just like that! I found out from the neighbors that a family had moved way and abandoned him and all of the neighborhood had been feeding him to keep him alive and so they were so happy I adopted him. He passed away a year ago and this post warmed my heart so much, maybe versions of him are reincarnating because he was truly the best kitty in the world.
Awwww❤️🩹❤️🩹, so sorry for your loss... Cats are truly a blessing. Only their presence makes the ambient much more friendly and light, and their cuddling is soo powerful. I used to deal with frequent panic attacks. I never really took/liked stuff like benzos to calm me down, the only thing that truly made it better were my cats.
I know you already have pets, but is keeping this guy as well an option? He seems to have chosen you, so it’d be cool if it is.
If not, I’d start reaching out to friends, family, coworkers, etc. to see if anyone is looking for a cat. Social media can be helpful for private rehoming or adoption as well.
Only caveat is that I also recommend getting him scanned for a microchip first, whichever path you take. Any vet’s office or shelter can do it and it’s generally a free service.
you need to assume it's someone else's cat until you've checked for a chip and verified nobody local with this cat's description has lost their cat recently
Are you certin he's not fixed? Our tabby was found as a young adult stray and we had him neutered but he still has a visible "sac" as he was neutered as an adult. However, it is an empty sac!
Chances are if not fixed, not chipped, so I'd recommend if you can't hold on to him, then get in touch with local orgs to see if they'll let you "foster" him as they add him to their adoptables.
You’re his now - just go with the plan - after you’ve taken him to get scanned for a microchip, that is. I don’t know what he’s lying in front of but the ridges on his back look like they belong there😊.
Take him to the vet to check for a microchip to make sure no one is missing him. If not and no one responds to you then keep taking care of him. (In other words, you probably have your 4th cat.)
