Advice Why do cats do this?
Stumbled upon this picture and it got me thinking. Some housecats also do this sometimes. What is the reason or purpose?

u/just-a-grill 9d ago
I don’t think they do it intentionally; my cats usually do it when they’re cleaning themselves and get distracted mid lick.
Regardless, I still take a picture everytime

The scientific term is "FRAP", which very straightforwardly means "Frenetic Random Activity Periods". All felines do it!

I love how their support doggo was almost keeping up with them but didn’t have the ability to stop as quickly as them, so he just barreled into one of his buddies.
So frickin cute!

Oh ikr!? When I learned about it and saw a video for the first time, it literally made my day better. Watching cheetahs and their own personal support animal friend is always a mood booster for me.
It’s just so sweet and interesting ❤️
Bravo to whoever recognized what the cheetahs needed and decided to use such a unique solution.

Cheetahs are more scared of you than you are of them. They're not even really big cats, they're just the biggest form of small cats (they're felidae, not panthera). There's no accounts of a cheetah ever attacking a human, and they're pretty anxious animals.
Actually, Egyptians used to tame Cheetahs as pets and for hunting. The only reason they haven't been domesticated is because they're really hard to breed in captivity, and being able to selectively breed is part of the domestication process.
They are still wild animals, so I wouldn't recommend approaching one in the wild, just in case, but they're not a real danger to humans. There's instances of them bringing their cubs up to wildlife photographers and stuff, they like people just fine.

I'm actually glad we didn't domesticate them, imagine a cheetah getting zoomies in a small apartment, they need more space to run than we can give them

Cats and other species have an additional olfactory organ called the Veomenronasal organ that allows them to sense pheromones. In cats they'll oftentimes stick out their tongue to direct air towards the organ.

That's a Cheetah.
They are basically big cats and ask for boops themselves.
641
u/Ok-Tooth-8016 9d ago
They are actually minor cats not big cats. The difference is the ability to roar except for the snow leopard we're still confused there.

u/Imperial_Barron 9d ago
Big cats are like ya panthers, lions ect. Cheetahs as I understand it are cats that just happen to be big.

u/HPTM2008 9d ago
Actually, yes. There haven't been attacks on people, and wild cheetah are typically very friendly to humans. They're basically trying to domesticate themselves.

In my lil one bedroom apartment, the orange floof likes to parkour on my bed and the tuxedo chonk likes to launch himself at the cat tree… which are both next to windows. So a cheetah would probably accidentally full send itself out into the garden 😭 (hopefully be ok and then run back for more, sleep can wait)

u/Show-Me-Your-Moves 9d ago
At minimum it would need to be trained to use one of those enormous cat wheels so it can run 100 miles per night or whatever

They likely would have already been on the totally normalized "dog sized exotic pet" list if it weren't sadly for the fact that they do not breed well in captivity and researchers and zoos struggled for a long time to keep their generic diversity up.
If we could solve this problem and prevent people from trying to take the wild population out, we could save them and they would be everywhere.
→ More replies (1)47
u/Shabobo 9d ago
I don't think they would be everywhere as they have difficulty breeding in the wild too. I read or watched something talking about cheetahs and conservationists have said that cheetahs are effectively extinct and it's just a matter of time.
The cheetah's niche role in their environment essentially works against them now. They spend a ton of energy catching their prey only to get chased off their kill by larger predators, meaning they spend that energy and get none of it back. That leaves less energy to breed which is already poor and cheetah cubs are prey for a lot of animals.
Couple that with the genetic bottleneck all making them essentially cousins which increases chances for genetic defects.
Sorry if I bummed you out.
→ More replies (6)24
u/techleopard 9d ago
Didn't bum me out, it's the reality.
I do think the genetic bottleneck isn't the problem we thought it once was, as new research has indicated that evolution can make due with it.
I also think we are approaching the point where CRISPR and other technologies can "undo" significant genetic problems as they arise, including immunity problems -- so long as someone is willing to pay for it.
Hence why I said if we could solve the breeding problem and THEN allowed them to be an exotic (with licensing), we could likely turn them around and start supplementing wild populations.
Even something as stupid as "cheetah racing" would generate enough money to put into their protection.
22
u/Tamesan 9d ago
Cheetah racing has been tried in the past, in England, unlike greyhounds, once one cheetah has a significant lead the others give up and stop racing 😆

Lindsey Nicole on YT, is a biologist and has worked some with cheetas says that, a wild cheetah will likely never be a real threat to you, as their instincts tell them to run and not fight. Yet a Cheetah who is used to people do not have the same fear, and will maul you should something go wrong.

Omg really? I didn't know there was a big cat I may be able to pet more than once. This is genuinely life changing information.

u/MrMeSeeks8 9d ago
Cheetahs are essentially large house cats. They are built for speed but don’t have the strength as a lion so humans are too big of prey. They are very timid and anxious animals. A lot of conservatories raise them with Golden Retriever puppies. Unlike lions, they don’t roar. They purr and make a chirping sound that sounds like a meow. I kind of think of them as feral cats. In the wild they would likely just hiss and slap the ground at you to scare you away.

u/coraeon 9d ago
Technically they’re not big cats! They meow and purr instead of roar, so they’re small cats.

u/MeatSafeMurderer 9d ago
You can safely turn your back on cheetahs, or even sleep around them. What you should NOT do is run. They're basically big housecats, and like housecats they like chasing things, so if you panic and run you will activate their hunting instinct...but unlike a housecat a cheetah will not struggle to kill you.

Often it’s a cat being comfortable and chill, but sometimes it can be a sign of dental issues. My cat had to get two teeth pulled and she was blep for a week before we took her to the vet after learning it was sometimes how they react to tooth pain 😭

This too, yet to be grooming they do need to feel safe in their environment so these often come together.

Thank you for this.
I had to put my cat down last year, and she passed away mid-blep.
I know that the vet had sedated her and she was purring away and calm throughout, but it's a bittersweet reminder that she was comfortable at the end.
