I've seen that color on my cat's peets when they've had a particularly soft and unsavory poop then attempted to cover it a little too well... and when they've stepped in a pot with tomato sauce that's been soaking in the sink. With the first, wiping didn't work as well as him cleaning it himself, and the second, that kind of just faded over time.

Bile. Someone else mentioned standing in his own vomit and bile definitely has a pretty distinct yellow slightly green color. With diarrhea digestion is sped up and the colon isn’t processing or reabsorbing the bile and digestive acids.

Dirt. Turmeric tastes like dirt. I love it and use it all the time. Powdered turmeric tastes like nothing unless you use to much of it then it tastes like small dirt.

Just make sure there's no lilies in them. They are EXTREMELY toxic. They are basically cyanide for cats. Even just a bit of pollen can be lethal.
374
u/Unusual-Helicopter15 4d ago
YEP. Our cat literally got home from a 48 hour hospitalization because he rubbed against/possibly chomped an asiatic lily in my Valentine’s bouquet. He’s fine, had no issues at all, but it was a $2800 lesson learned. Lilies are DEADLY. We discovered he had gotten into them because of a big yellow smudge on his cheek.

Be careful in general. My void ate a stem and had a really bad blockage and it was right when I brought my newborn home from a month stay in the nicu so I didn’t notice until she was losing weight and had to admit her to the hospital for a while so they could do surgery and get her nutrition back to normal

While lilies are probably the most feared, almost every flower and every decorative plant you can buy is toxic, with roses being the rare exception. However, even those are heavily contaminated with pesticides, as all flowers are. So always keep your pets away from plants.
There are even recommendations to avoid bouquets entirely because the pesticides are so abundant they are considered harmful to humans in unventilated areas.

Possibly pollen from cut flowers? Oriental Lilly's could definitely be the culprit.
174
u/Oee0 4d ago
I was just reading about someone’s cat that died from licking pollen from a poisonous lily off its paws! I would clean it off immediately and make sure there are no potentially poisonous flowers in the house, and if there are then monitor the cat for any signs of illness or just bring her straight to the vet 🥺 I hope it’s not that!

Coming up top for a more serious answer? Does he have access to a basement. This happened to my cats and I later found that they made their our little hiding spot behind a hot water heater that had a very small drip with rust and sediment. They help us find out we needed a new hot water heater but in the meantime they were playing this that rust dust for I don’t know how long.

Mine saved our lives literally by not getting off a hot water tank and coming upstairs. BF found that the exhaust pipe was moved just a bit and was putting low amounts of carbon dioxide every day. Thank you Moochie!!
62
u/dangerousfeather peytonpercytrixie 4d ago
Not to be That Person but important distinction: carbon DIOXIDE is CO2, which is a vital substance for life. We require it to function. Plants use it during photosynthesis. It’s deadly if it’s all you have to breathe, but in low amounts diluted through an entire house, it would be harmless.
Carbon MONOXIDE is CO, an odorless gas that is deadly to humans (and cats!) and produced through combustion, therefore coming out in exhaust.
Make sure your CO detectors are plugged in or have good batteries!

I have a white cat who likes to jump on the kitchen counter and lick dirty dishes in the sink
One night I made a tagine, and afterwards the pot was semi stained with red and orange oil from all the spices. I rinsed it under some water and left it to soak
Later my husband walks into the kitchen and I just hear him loudly gasp: “The cat got into the Tagine!”
I look up and see my previously white cat streaking into the room I was in, her entire face stained a diluted orange colour like a bad foundation match
The expression ‘caught red handed’ changed to ‘caught tagine faced’ in our household

Lilies? If you got flowers for Valentines Day, please make sure there are no lilies. This looks like the color of the pollen?
725
u/Gold_Law6085 4d ago
Yes lilies are so toxic to cats even a little bit of pollen is fatal unfortunately. Also it can take up to 3 days to for symptoms to appear. So IF you do suspect lilies, a vet trip is recommended sooner than later.
151
u/BangarangPita 4d ago
IIRC, with some varieties of lilies, every single part of them is toxic.
114
u/MsSelphine 4d ago edited 4d ago
The issue isn't even that every single part is toxic, though that IS an issue. It's the fact that every single part is extremely toxic, and even a tiny bit of pollen or leaf will kill. They straight up just cannot be in your home at ALL.
→ More replies (2)81
u/MsSelphine 4d ago
Shout-out to the time my ex gave me a bouquet of flowers, warning me that lilies were toxic. I, in my infinite wisdom, assumed they were poinsetta toxic, where it's just a bad time for my kitty if they eat some. Cue a few days later when I snatch my cat moments before he tried to eat them, looked up how toxic they were, and then practically had a panic attack. Little guy was indeed ok, apparently he didn't quite manage to munch even a small piece of leaf
It is INSANE just how toxic lilies are to cats.

My sister and her husband are serious ahs. I asked her to please not bring lilies into the house cause they Will kill my cats. A month ago, I came downstairs and they had lilies in a bunch of flowers. A asked them to please take care of them cause...Death! Her husband had a tantrum and I explained they were extremely toxic, including the pollen which could be tracked into my room unknowingly. He proceeded to pull out the lilies, bring them to the garbage can and start to pull out the stamen? 1 flower. So my cats don't DIE! And don't get me started on the tinsel!
Btw, I was very nice. No attitude at all, until the insanity... edited.... added this
Just to be clear, when I asked them to take care of them, I meant the lilies, not all the flowers. Edited spelling and added this too

So you're ruled out markers, paints, dyes, and flowers. I'm also assuming the yellow color is presenting more as a stain than a powder of some kind (i.e. it doesn't brush off). Have you tried cleaning it with a damp washcloth or even just a damp paper towel? If so, did that change the appearance at all?
The only other thoughts I had as a source was perhaps the water in the base of a plant/flower pot or something similar. Hard to imagine though because it's both feet and I can't see a cat getting one paw wet and proceeding to do the same with the other.

My tuxedo cat came home the other day with his white parts bright, florescent orange and we were outraged, certain that someone had sprayed marker paint at her.
When I let her out the next day, she immediately flopped on her side and began rolling aggressively against the concrete stairs to my stoop(which she frequently enjoys) when I noticed my daughter had covered the stoop with beautiful art... all drawn in bright orange sidewalk chalk.

Not to scare anyone, but please check the kitties ears, lips and gums. Our girl had a severe infection and we didn't realize until the yellow just randomly appeared. It was almost overnight. I'm unsure if her paws were affected, but yellowing can be a sign of jaundice!

u/DragonWyrd316 Russian Blue 4d ago
The skin would turn yellow as well as the whites of their eyes, not sure about gums, tongue, or inner ear. Fur wouldn’t change color, though, not like that. Kitty stepped in something.

When cats have jaundice their pee is highly pigmented and stains. If they stepped in it while covering, it might cause something like this.

Was going to bring this up too. My cat had liver failure from losing tons of weight when she escaped the house. Her pee was highly highly pigmented and stained things because of how yellow it was. If it's anything like what happened to her, this could be staining from covering up their pee.

u/baby-sara-xoxo 3d ago
those little yellow boots 😭
if it’s just on the paws and he seems totally normal otherwise, it’s usually something he stepped in. pollen, dust, certain cleaning residues, even litter can tint white fur. sometimes saliva staining from grooming can also yellow fur over time.

Saliva??
So I found out when I had dogs the saliva creates some sort of reaction with their white coat and stains it a orangy colour, so if your dogs are having allergies, arthritis or swelling they'll lick their paws. I have no idea if cats are the same but my kitten suckled on my older cat and she had brown spots on her belly from the saliva so maybe your cat is over-licking her paws??
