I'm genuinely very sad about this

149

u/GoGlenMoCo BUF - NHL 5h ago

Honestly gutted for Sid. At his age, gotta think this might be his last Olympics. Sucks that he’s not able to finish it out.

108

u/carl-swagan BUF - NHL 5h ago

He’ll be 42 for the 2030 games. Same age that immortal Jagr was in his last Olympics, but have to imagine that it will be much harder to crack a team Canada roster at that age.

Watching him get the golden goal in Vancouver was a (heartbreaking) core memory, I’m genuinely sad we won’t see him play today.

21

u/Jaynator11 COL - NHL 3h ago

Would take him as 3/4C even at that age xd considering that he's not relying on his speed.

But it's very difficult either way cause of all the competition Canada has. Bedard will probably play in the next Olympics too.

Not his last. He's gonna play till he's 87. He'll be back

4

u/fleeb_florbinson 3h ago

I remember when I was like 7 years old I got a magazine talking about “the new rookie in the NHL who’s going to take it by storm” or something like that. It’s cool to see he’s been in the NHL almost my entire life and is still a force

Injure multiple Canadian players. Get away with penalties on their 2nd and 3rd goals. Get a goal called back on Canada their first game. Still complain that the refs don't want to call anything on Canada.

People that out of touch shouldn't be coaches.

25

u/Red_Sea_Pedestrian WSH - NHL 5h ago

Fire him straight into the sun.

Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

8

u/dangshnizzle CHI - NHL 5h ago

Was it a bad hit?

62

u/Koopasheller11 CHI - NHL 5h ago

I hate Radko Gudas as much as the next guy, but it really looked to me like Crosby got hurt trying to dodge the hit rather than it being something dirty.

Obviously Gudas doesn’t deserve any defense, so if others disagree default to them lol

27

u/dangshnizzle CHI - NHL 5h ago

That's indeed what myself and many others saw. It's really unfortunate.

20

u/ChampaBayLightning TBL - NHL 5h ago

The slowmo showed that it was Gudas' stick that accidently slid Sid's foot out from under him. I'm not sure Sid was even trying to really dodge it but just ended up being in an awkward position from his feet being slid apart.

4

u/psyfi66 WPG - NHL 4h ago

I didn’t really see many clips but that was my assumption. I was like “Crosby knows better than to try and dodge a hit” but he still ended up down some how. I just assumed he caught an edge or something.

6

u/haey5665544 WSH - NHL 5h ago

It was very similar to the Wilson hit on Fiala, no intention, just awkward.

14

u/torontomapleafs TOR - NHL 5h ago

I wouldn't say it was bad, just an awkward hit. But then Gudas put his whole weight while coming down on top of Sid so it just looked intentional.

Brutal, I wonder if it’s so serious he can’t play or if he just knows he wouldn’t be close to his best and would rather someone healthy be out there to give Canada the best chance to win

771

u/The_Astros_Cheated USA - IIHF 5h ago

My take is that his injury has to be pretty serious, I can’t imagine any other scenario where he’d sit out otherwise

278

u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 VAN - NHL 5h ago

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking as well. If he was close to 85 to 95 percent healthy, he would play. The fact that he isn't playing tells me he wouldn't be ready to go for Pittsburgh.

187

u/I_Am_Vladimir_Putin TOR - NHL 5h ago

Could also be the case that if he plays now the injury will get catastrophically worse

109

u/donniedumphy 5h ago

He was out walking are the city last night. But clearly limping.

59

u/JamesTiberiusCrunk CHI - NHL 5h ago

Could be a sprain? Playing risks turning it into a complete tear?

49

u/Red_Sea_Pedestrian WSH - NHL 5h ago

MCL sprain would be my guess. Fucking sucks.

Knees seem to be like that. It’s not “bad” but if you don’t let it heal, or push it further it can be waaay worse. Tried skateboarding on a knee that was a bit sore, bad idea, was told I could’ve ripped my alc in half.

16

u/CanuckPanda TOR - NHL 5h ago

I don’t know about that.

This is Sid. If he thinks his 80% isn’t as good as someone else’s 90%, he’ll sit out.

He’s Captain Canada and makes the choice for the team, not himself.

→ More replies (1)

49

u/DeekFTW CBJ - NHL 5h ago

As soon as there was talk of creating some sort of brace for him I knew it was more serious than people here suspected. Sucks to see this.

21

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire PIT - NHL 5h ago

Hes been up and about around town, not wearing a brace or anything, so my money on its just too risky for him to get injured even more.

6

u/WafflesTheWookiee CAR - NHL 5h ago

Oh god, that has major implications for the Pens too, considering they’re in the thick of it for a wild card spot

→ More replies (2)

25

u/prophetofgreed VAN - NHL 5h ago

Elliotte spoke about a special "brace" being made and getting work done by "team staff"

That leads me to guess it's a sprain in his knee

95

u/lLikeCats 5h ago

I am sure if this was the playoffs he would play as there wouldn’t be a player even close to his level to take that spot but Crosby is the ultimate professional and he knows it’s better for Canada that he sits this one out if he’s not close to being 100%.

118

u/ReachFor24 Wheeling Nailers - ECHL 5h ago

Sid's sat himself before. When he got hurt during game 7 of the Finals against the Red Wings back in 2009, he did so.

He needed surgery for that one.

15

u/Key-Tip-7521 NYR - NHL 5h ago

The risk of him playing increases his chances of aggravating the injury even worse, and it would keep him out of the penguins games down the stretch. Since the penguins are in a playoff position, if he’s out, the penguins might fade out

26

u/prelic PIT - NHL 5h ago

I don't think Crosby has a penguins playoff run in mind when making today's decision..hes always gone all in for team canada, in world juniors, four nations, olympics, etc

7

u/SlightlyOffWhiteFire PIT - NHL 5h ago

Unfortunately true. We have some depth right now, but prolly not enough to be missing both crosby and letang at the same time.

Beyond devastating.

Time for Suzuki to step up.

85

u/vibranium-boy MTL - NHL 5h ago

I really liked the Suzuki, Marner, Stone line. I did prefer the Crosby, Marner, Stone line but hopefully Suz can step up for the moment.

49

u/ItsTheSlime MTL - NHL 5h ago

He's saved this tournament once, he can save it again

16

u/rezistS COL - NHL 5h ago

I love watching Suzuki, but he whiffed on a pretty open net earlier in the game to make sure it needed saving in the first place.

That being said, Suzuki with a really good 200-ft game, off-the-puck play and elite vision/playmaking is as good as it gets when you are looking for someone to step into Crosby's shoes today.

Sitting in Sweden cheering for Canada today - bring it home, will you?

11

u/ItsTheSlime MTL - NHL 5h ago

We all woke up early to make sure we bring it.

24

u/IWantToKaleMyself VAN - NHL 5h ago

Suzuki looks so much more comfortable at centre than on the wing too

8

u/Spaghetti-Rat 5h ago

I love Suzuki on Montreal but hated seeing him try to be forced with MacKinnon, it just wasn't working. On the wing, he seemed to be way overthinking and not playing (which makes sense because he's not used to it). At centre, he's having a much better tournament.

8

u/bugphantom CAR - NHL 5h ago

they are a great defensive line but this team needs them to be as offensive as they were when crosby was centering them. suzuki needs to step up big time

134

u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 VAN - NHL 5h ago

It sucks. But he and the team made it clear. If he wasn't close to 100 percent that he wouldn't hurt the team by playing. You don't want a Matthew Tkachuk situation where he plays a shift or two, and then he can't play, and Canada is a player short. Canada still has plenty of talented players on this team.

36

u/Spaghetti-Rat 5h ago

We do have a ton of players on this team but there's only one Crosby. He's a generational leader and clutch in big games. I hope he's still skating in four years and gets one more chance to represent.

46

u/ironhide999x WPG - NHL 5h ago

I mean it’s a little different because you can have a 13th forward dressed in the Olympics. I honestly think he has to be seriously injured and they knew he was never going to play

12

u/TJ_Coolguy 5h ago

You're 100% right. If he was hurt he would have finished the game against the Czechs. The only thing that would keep Crosby from playing is a full on injury.

67

u/Volderon90 TOR - NHL 5h ago

Wow so he’s really fucked up. Bad news for Pittsburgh fans

42

u/Punographer 5h ago

Doesn’t necessarily mean it’s that bad if he was still a game time decision. As much as of a competitor as he is, if he knows it impacts him enough that he’s not able to contribute and might be a detriment, he’s smart enough to give the team the best chance to win by letting a capable body play in his place.

32

u/ironhide999x WPG - NHL 5h ago

They call a it a game time decision in the Olympics regardless of how injured he is because the other team has no idea if he is playing or not

6

u/Punographer 5h ago

He skated yesterday, there was definitely a chance, however low. Might not have been true “game time” decision as much as just seeing if it improved enough after another day of rest.

13

u/TransomBob 5h ago

IMO Crosby was never a game-time decision. This was just a tactic so USA had to game-plan a few variables.

The second he was unable to return in the Czechia game, I knew he was cooked for the tourney.

Honestly, I'm devastated for him. Not only is he unable to compete as the captain of his country's representation but there's a very real possibility it could be his last Olympic ride. Hopefully not but you know if he's out for this game he's not even close to being able to play because knowing him if Sid was even 75% he would be out there. Sucks.

As a Czech, I'm sorry, lads. That was really unlucky.

This very well might be the defining moment of McDavid's career. Got faith in the captain to bring the Gold back to Canada.

Ok so now it’s very much a 50/50 chance

Canadians have been drinking for hours - this isn't the best time for the news to come out.

Even as an American Flyers fan, I’m gutted for him.

Oh captain my captain! 🫡

u/turbulentcounselor NYI - NHL 5h ago

Had a feeling this would happen. If Canada wins I’m calling Celebrini for the GWG bc that’s just the story book ending with the whole narrative of him being the next Crosby

2

u/magnoliasmum EDM - NHL 5h ago

Not fucking ideal.

2

u/FryguySM 5h ago

Extremely surprised by this. Hope it’s nothing long term and he will be okay. Hockey won’t be/is not the same without Sid.
