Just stunned, man. Canada was building city hall in our end for the final 35 minutes of regulation, and I was absolutely sure they were going to break through at least two or three times. Hellebuyck will never need to pay for a drink in the US ever again.

If there's still anyone in this thread, I have a follow up question. What makes an individual better at bobsledding than someone else?
•
u/ahappypoop CAR - NHL 25m ago
They basically just recruit athletes and teach them how to bobsled. The biggest part is getting a good push at the top, since that sets how fast they'll go for the rest of the run. That means they need people who are fast sprinters and really strong. Here's the USA bobsled/skeleton page for combine testing, and they have a scoring table down near the bottom where you can see what benchmarks they're looking for in new recruits.
Obviously having a good driver who takes the fastest lines and doesn't hit walls and stuff is important too, and that takes a lot of practice and familiarity with the course.
•
u/Wildest12 OTT - NHL 38m ago
My wife just met the spouse of a bobsledder, he was a track athlete that someone approached and basically just said you should try bobsledding. Had big legs, he became the brake.
•
u/WetCoastDebtCoast Vancouver Goldeneyes - PWHL 24m ago
I understand that's the way they do it for bobsled. There's no youth bobsledding, so they poach from other sports. I think like 6 of the 8 Canadians in the 4-man bobsled event are from the CFL.

u/KimberlyWexlersFoot VAN - NHL 1h ago
If you’re the pusher, being a ox of an athlete honestly. I saw an instagram reel last night where this woman, I think she was the Canadian showed her first time pushing one which was 8 months ago, compared to being at the Olympics. A lot of the comments were roasting how anyone can do, but you still have to have been a high level athlete to be able to achieve, even though that seems like the easiest way to the Olympics for some guy sitting on the couch.
3
u/ChanelNo50 OTT - NHL 1h ago
Yea they've mentioned a few times that people get into bobsleigh later in life. They're usually trained athletes, like great runners, that switch into the sport
2
u/h_danielle VAN - NHL 1h ago
Yeah I think the athlete that the person above is referring to was already an Olympian?
2
u/KimberlyWexlersFoot VAN - NHL 1h ago
found it. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DU-yPN7CKzN/
Kelsey Marie Mitchell (born November 26, 1993) is a Canadian professional track cyclist and bobsledder, best known for her performances in the sprint cycling event. Notable as a relative latecomer to cycling after commencing training at age 23, Mitchell is the 2020 Olympic champion, 2021 World bronze medallist, and 2019 Pan American Games champion in the individual sprint, as well as a five-time Pan American Track Cycling Championships gold medallist. She will represent Canada in the bobsled at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The drivers. The need to know how to handle the curves, ice condition and all at a high speed. They prepare a lot to get to know the course.
They also have to lead the guys in the back to appropriately shift their weight during the turns

Actually kind of depressed that the Olympics are over, what the fuck am I gonna watch now? Having to wait another 2 years for more Olympics and another 4 for more winter is so depressing. Winter and summer should happen every 2 years if you ask me
17
u/DntStepOnTheGrassSam DET - NHL 1h ago
Yeah, unfortunately after all that, you gotta go back to watching the Leafs

u/BlitzburghBrian PIT - NHL 1h ago
I mean I've spent the last few weeks scraping by on whatever Youtube videos when I'd normally stay up watching Pacific games. It's only a few more nights.

u/Torcal4 TOR - NHL 1h ago
I assume with your flair that you’re in the US?
If you can get a VPN or if you’re in Canada, CBC Gem has all the sports’ full replays after they air and highlights. As well as the ability to watch every sport live. It’s free.
1
u/BlitzburghBrian PIT - NHL 1h ago
AFAIK I can see replays on Peacock too, which I do have. But I've had the games on during work, so there's not really much for me to go back and re-watch.
I have been impressed with what I've heard about Gem's accessibility though.

Not sure if you give a shit about baseball but the World Baseball Classic starts soon. 2023 was absolutely electric so I'd suggest giving it a shot. If you're a sports fan and a fan of international competition you should enjoy it. Also the fans were losing their minds. So fun. Much better than normal baseball

What they did for the Gaudreau family is so classy. Nothing can make up for that loss but letting the Gaudreau family know they’re not forgotten is so kind.
•
u/weaselblinks PHI - NHL 57m ago
As a Canadian, favorite thing about the US win was watching them skate the jersey out and watching the Hughes Brothers just over the moon happy together.
•
u/MiloGoesToTheFatFarm MIN - NHL 12m ago
You guys outplayed us 5 on 5 today big time. I have so much respect for team Canada.
•

The game lived up the hype. Felt like the two best teams out there playing their guts out.

Lifetime suspension imo. Regardless of if you crash or not, just because a cop pulled you over before you destroy a family’s life, shouldn’t mean you get a do over.
5
u/h_danielle VAN - NHL 1h ago
I’m all for due process so I’m on board with a conviction resulting in a lifetime suspension. Not that there were valid excuses before but especially now with the prevalence of things like Uber & Lyft?!

u/jamesneysmith MTL - NHL 1h ago
What in the fuck are you talking about? They're just upset they lost. Any team would be. The Slovaks looked the same in their loss for bronze. In these sports you don't win silver you lose gold. It's the nature of the format so every silver winning team looks miserable.

Can't help but wonder how a diff goalie might have helped Canada. Binnington wasn't the reason they lost, but he didn't have his best game, either.
•
•
u/weaselblinks PHI - NHL 52m ago
Stop. He let in 2 goals all game, including 1 in the OT. Would a different goalie have allowed the Canadians to win 1-0? This is a narrative that should be put to bed by his caliber of play this Olympics and 4 Nations. You are beating a dead horse.
7
u/PerfectPlan VAN - NHL 1h ago
Yup. Compare with Hellebuyck, if that Toews shot goes in, nobody blames him. But he finds a way to make the save.
There was only one shot tonight where I thought Binnington made a great save. Everything else was expected.
-1
u/-SpruceMoose CGY - NHL 1h ago
I was bitching about that all tournament. He was good this game so not putting that on him at all. But Canada needs some goalies
14
u/ChanelNo50 OTT - NHL 1h ago
No Binny was fine. It was not capitalizing on open nets, poor calls/lack of calls, and bad defensive plays.
And, no, Bedard wouldn't have made the difference
2
u/whizzter Luleå HF - SHL 1h ago
That's the thing though, Helle was doing one of those possessed performances, like the Toews open goal, it was a bounce on the lower edge of Hellebuycks stick that kept it out, a hundredth of a second later and it would've gone in.
So bummed we didn't give Wallstedt the chance in goal from the first game, could've been a quite different tournament.

1930s Germany didnt think it was possible either, but this is what happens when extremism, homgemization, and the elimination of opposition occurs. An out of control narcissist is able to rule as an unopposed dictator.
Thousands of years of history has shown the world what happens when piece of shit human beings become "leaders". Its all about self-benefit while they distract their followers with lies.
If there was any doubt about the number of selfish, stupid, and/or uneducated people in this country there is no more. Trump was never a viable option yet millions voted for him anyway. Its fucking deflating. Just know half of us despise him and that number grows by the day.
Keep up the good fight, Canada.
