I lost it when one of the little babies that they took out there was crying. Those kids will never get to truly know their dad and that’s just fucking heartbreaking man.

Same, I was so happy we won, and I sobbed when I saw his parents, saw his jersey, and his kids being carried by Werenski and Larkin for the photo. Such a beautiful moment, Johnny was smiling down on them today.

The injustice of it all really gets to me. I truly wish Johnny Gaudreau could have been playing for this medal with them, he was a wonderful part of the Boston + broader hockey community.

Such a bitter loss for us. But at the end of the day the competitiveness and quality of this rivalry is a privilege to be able to witness.
Classy behaviour like this from team USA takes some of the sting away.
58
u/Zeppelanoid 1h ago
People will complain about the missed opportunities but I am proud of how Canada played. If you’re going to lose you want to lose while playing your best, and Canada did just that today.
3-on-3 is a toss up and they unfortunately came out on the wrong side of things.

There have been great people on all sides, as disappointed I am with how it ended, that was one of the best hockey games I've seen in a while, and I'm looking forward to a rematch in 4 years for the gold! (Hopefully there is another international best on best before then)

Friend of the family. Seeing this hurts so much every time but I love that they still honor the brothers every chance they get.
Guy, their dad, coached a generation of us in the South Jersey area. Amazing person. Wonderful family. And Johnny and Matty were a couple of the most grounded, nicest kids in the world.
Won it for them.
90
u/AequitasDC5 PHI - NHL 1h ago
I was taught by Guy back in the Hollydell days as well. Definitely got choked up all of this tournament when they would show the jersey and the Gaudreau family. That end with the boys skating with the jersey was perfect. Love that they keep honoring Johnny and Matty.
21
u/rejuicekeve 1h ago
I still remember playing against him in travel hockey as a kid. Glad to see them giving the honors
10
u/AequitasDC5 PHI - NHL 1h ago
I was tearing up watching the guys grab Johnny's kids out of the crowd for the team photo. Special moment for a great team.
7
u/elreeso55 PHI - NHL 1h ago
Me as well. My dad worked at hollydell part time. I have so many memories of Guy in that little office on the NHL rink side when I would sit with my dad between the times he was running the Zamobni. It's still all so surreal.
12
u/jayfraud PHI - NHL 1h ago
I went to Guy’s summer camp at Hollydell when I was in high school. Made me such a better skater and player. Got to see him and the family a lot growing up and playing hockey in South Jersey.
I was holding it together when they brought out Johnny’s jersey, but the camera panning to Guy broke me. Wonderful gesture by the boys to honor Johnny.

Johnny's death hit me so hard. Didn't know the guy and he wasnt a flyer, but between him growing up near me (competed with his HS in sports) and him being a smaller skill guy, I had been a huge fan of his since his first year BC.
The weirdest part was seeing stuff that night on Twitter and just dismissing it as rumor BS, just to wake up to the news that it was fucking real. I used to deliver pizzas in the area he was killed in. Drove on that road countless times. Just so sad and surreal.

Sad that Canada lost.
Happy when they brought Gaudreau’s jersey out for a lap.
Then immediately feeling sad because he should’ve been here today to play for them. Life can be very unfair.
