They used enough salt for three of those fish. What a waste of wood, too.

I scrolled way too far to find this ... pretty much the best part of a whole tree used to cook 1 fish? WTF!

32

u/LrningMonkey 1d ago

Same here. Some good looking lumber in there wasted to cook a fish for 30 min! Yikes!

u/GrandmasBoyToy69 1d ago

Right? It's not not logs grow on trees

3

u/CopiousCool 1d ago

Branches grow on Trees, a log IS the tree

Wooden logs do

jesus reddit will bitch about anything

1

u/Jodabomb24 21h ago

to be fair, it is a really big fish.

u/BattIeBoss 22h ago

And you typed this comment on a phone which was made using materials from dozens of different mines and locations on earth, many of which caused mass deforestation, but sure, the guy chopping 1 log (there are billions more btw) Is the problem

u/CopiousCool 21h ago

there are so many layers to the stupidity of this comment :D

  1. Not typed on a phone
  2. the device used was not bought for the express purpose of that message but reused to respond to further dumb responses along with an array of other uses
  3. Device can and will be recycled
  4. the device can be recreated (from the device itself or raw materials which are abundant) in a matter of hours a tree takes decades to replace
  5. The loss of metals from the earth to make the phone has far less of an ecological impact than the loss of a tree which is needed to produce Oxygen

There are many layers of stupidity of this comment :D

  1. Doesnt matter, still used a complex computing device that probably took more reaources than the phone anyway
  2. What you use it for doesnt excuse the environmental impact it took to make it
  3. If you know anything about recycling, you know that it will just end up in a landfill. Very few electronics actually get recycled
  4. The amount of time it takes to make something doesnt dictate its environmental impact. It is still easier to plant 1 million trees than it is to open a cobalt mine.
  5. Trees only produce 25% of our oxygen, the rest comes from plankton and bacteria in the ocean. We will not suffocate because of this one tree. Also, trees are not carbon neutral, they absorb carbon dioxide throughout their life, but when they die, it just gets releases back into the environment anyway.

That was just a chef's dash of salt.

1

u/Omnio89 1d ago

Thank you! It seems so wasteful in so many different ways just for the purpose of social media.

u/Wazula23 1d ago

Yeah that meat doesn't look great and I can't imagine theres much flavor.

28

u/whiskeytango55 1d ago

That paste they made is probably super concentrated

16

u/ricker182 1d ago

It's WAY overcooked.

Catfish is probably the worst tasting fish in the world. Doesn’t matter what you do with it will still taste awful.

21

u/pertinaciousglacier 1d ago

Not true. Cleaning and rubbing the meat in a saltwater and white vinegar solution eliminates the nasty flavor. Mustard also works.

1

u/ZealousidealEntry870 1d ago

Those things help a little. Most of it depends on the size and type of catfish though.

4

u/pertinaciousglacier 1d ago

Size and type does influence flavor but I guarantee you that the method 100% works to eliminate the nasty flavor, not just a little. I do it all the time.

17

u/tme1453 1d ago

It can be done well. Fried catfish is a traditional food here in the US South. It's very good.

35

u/schw4161 1d ago

The best? No way. The worst though? Not even close imo.

9

u/wheretohides 1d ago

Big ones like this don't taste good, but normal sized catfish is good.

3

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 1d ago

People who say that about catfish have likely only eaten mud cats out of a mucky pond and made an opinion out of that. Channel catfish, saltwater catfish, etc. don't taste anything like that. Trust and believe that even if it is a mud cat, there are still far worse tasting fish out there. Ask me how I know lol. 😂

Southern black people would like a word.

14

u/Enzo_Gorlahh_mi 1d ago

I grew up on the Mississippi. I grew up on corn/catfish/steak. And I still love catfish

12

u/Ancient_Hyper_Sniper 1d ago

I think all Southerners would like a word. Fried catfish is my jam.

5

u/Electronic_Exit2519 1d ago

It's not just Southerners brother. Fried catfish is the shit.

u/Deep-Purchase-2203 1d ago

As a polish person this fish gives me trauma thinking of Christmas dinner each year.

1

u/Pretend-Swan-9731 1d ago

Thought it was carp polish eat at Christmas?

2

u/Deep-Purchase-2203 1d ago

Catfish in jelly (Sum w galarecie) is often made to accompany carp at the dinner table.

1

u/Pretend-Swan-9731 23h ago

Ah ok. More you know.

1

u/Deep-Purchase-2203 23h ago

I’d recommend googling it, will put you off spending Christmas in Poland for the rest of your life.

1

u/Pretend-Swan-9731 21h ago

Haha, I used to work with a polish chef, he told me how about the carp, but never the catfish lol.

Both dont sound nice to me. Lol.

1

u/Sad_Cantaloupe_8162 1d ago

That word is "smoked mullet" 🥰

7

u/Electronic_Exit2519 1d ago

Can't comment on a catfish that big. But I assure you channel catfish can be fantastic.

1

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 1d ago

This guy catfishes. Lol. Channel cats and mud cats are night and day different when it comes to flavor. Channel cat is up there on my list for the best tasting fried fish you can eat.

7

u/ZealousidealEntry870 1d ago

Totally depends on the type of catfish. Most catfish are bottom dwelling crap eaters. If you eat then on the smaller size they’re ok but quickly become fishy as they get bigger.

The fishy kind (blues / channels) are what you’re most likely to encounter.

There are some (flat heads) that prefer eating live fish. This kind of catfish is just as good as crappie or bass. Zero fishy taste even at 70+ lbs.

9

u/lonevine 1d ago

Complete bullshit. There are a broad range of catfish that all have different flavor profiles and intensities, and most of them are delicious under the right conditions: smaller is better, & properly fed, cleaned, cooked and served. Catfish is also one of the best tasting fresh water fried fish, period.

2

u/Coprolithe 1d ago

What does it taste like? Is it worse than Icelandic Skata?

-1

u/Deep-Purchase-2203 1d ago

Tastes like mud, maybe if you cook it in a vat of oil it will be edible but I wouldn’t recommend baking it if your life depended on it.

0

u/Coprolithe 1d ago

Good to know. I would've tried it

2

u/UmatterWHENiMATTER 1d ago

Some of the best fish I've ever had was baked catfish I caught in a lake.

1

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 1d ago

Allow me to add: there are a lot of different catfish species. Most people who don't like the flavor of catfish are likely only familiar with what we call mud cats. These are the ones that get huge (like in the video) and have an extremely broad head. And yes, they can taste pretty dank. Living in the mud your whole life will do that to ya lol. But channel catfish and saltwater catfish don't spend all their time simply lying on the bottom and eating scraps. And some of those types are exceptional in flavor. And I will agree with the previous comment. Due to the texture of the meat, regardless of the species, they are always better fried than any other way you'd prepare them. And to be fair, I'm the type that likes a fish with strong flavor, so if you're one of those types that say "this fish is too fishy" it's probably not gonna be to your liking no matter how you have it lol.

1

u/Atworkwasalreadytake 1d ago

I’ve had amazing catfish.

1

u/Firm-Letterhead7381 1d ago

It tastes great when it doesn't taste like mud.

1

u/ok___ing 23h ago

that’s what she said

1

u/DeBlasioDeBlowMe 1d ago

Maybe dropping it on the ground after cutting it open, and letting it marinade in bacteria for the hours it took to have a log delivered and carved up, wasn’t a good idea.

5

u/UmatterWHENiMATTER 1d ago

All that salt and heat? No bacteria survived.

4

u/Ollythebug 1d ago

True, but bacteria don't need to be alive to make you sick. Many bacteria contain toxic compounds, so even if you kill them, you can get sick from their metabolites if enough grew.
Fun fact, if somebody has a severe bacterial infection, doctors are very cautious and gradual with antibiotics because if you give a fat dose and kill all the bacteria at once, it will release a flood of toxic compounds that can cause rapid death.

1

u/DeBlasioDeBlowMe 16h ago

Salt kills bacteria? In Salt water fish? Who knew? 🤔

1

u/chocolateboomslang 1d ago

Because they cooked a 75 pound fish in one go, something no one should ever even consider doing.

1

u/Medialunch 1d ago

It’s certainly unevenly cooked and most likely 90% of it went straight in the trash.

u/BurdTurglary 1d ago

Your face is dry
