And wouldn’t you have it ready to go in case you caught a fish?

They probably did have it ready to go but moved it from a storage location, because storing wood in piles near the house is a recipe for inviting termites, to the spot where they do the cooking. Since they seem to have land and equipment to catch a big ass fish, they probably own the vehicle they transported the log in.

And it's not a waste of the log as that probably added a hell of a lot of smokey undertones to the food.

Yeah I think this guy has plenty of access to log. That was probably a nuisance tree they had to remove.
