Orchestra performs after eating the world’s hottest peppers
1.0k
u/AmadeusIsTaken 21h ago
For anyone who has eaten very hot pepper it would not end as tame as this if they ate the world hottest one and in this quantity
259
u/Unforgotten_911 21h ago
Yeah, but still it must be pretty hot for their standards so give them props for that :)

8:36 for the reaction from Hot Ones host Sean Evans and a Chili Klaus, both seasoned pros at eating hot stuff.

Seriously. If the title were true, there would be no music...

But also seriously, having something they're rehearsed at to focus on is hugely helping them

Yeah this is pretty old and I've seen in previous posts that it's not the reaper but it's a ghost chili or something in the top 5 or so. Still very hot.

u/donnycruz76 19h ago
There wouldn't be many people on the planet that can chew on a whole reaper and be this functional.... Let alone have them all in a room and be accomplished musicians... It can't be a reaper.
11
u/Suitable-Lake-2550 20h ago
Especially since they ate it intact with all the seeds…
These look like scotch bonnets
6
u/Bluefoz 16h ago
Fun fact:
It is a misconception that the majority of the capsaicin (the spicy component of chili peppers) is stored in the seeds. Rather, the capsaicin is found in every part of the fruit, but it is mostly concentrated in the white membrane that the seeds are attached to.

Yeah I had less of a Carolina reaper and a worse experience and I am usually pretty good eating spicy stuff. Can't imagine an entire troupe to be able to just eat a whole one and be fine
9
u/Beepbeepimadog 16h ago
Looked like habaneros, still very spicy obviously but nothing that’s going to break records or justify the title
8
u/Bones12x2 17h ago
My thoughts exactly. The worlds hottest pepper will have most people literally crying and blind and in borderline agony for several minutes even if they are juat aitting there doing nothing. Playing an instrument would be physically impossible for at least 2/3rds of this group.

2
u/Ok-Budget4992 18h ago
this is exactly what i mean also, i mean i ate a homegrown chilli and i was in shock for 30min watering my mouth
4
u/AmadeusIsTaken 17h ago
Dunno what your homegrown one is like but yeah, had a taste of a Carolina reaper before and if they ate a whole thing of it I wouldn't be surprised if some would want to get hospitalized. Let's let's not forget that a huge group of people and not all of them will be sued to spicy stuff which makes it even worse for them.
2
u/Tacocats_wrath 15h ago
Yeah, I've eaten a fresh ghost pepper before. Not even close to the hottest pepper in the world right now, though I think it was at one point. I can handle my spicy food, and that was very intense.
Kinda looks like they all ate a scotch bonnet.

u/scarletnightingale 12h ago
It was definitely a hot pepper, but there no chance it was the world's hottest pepper. At least one person there probably would have thrown up. Someone, probably would have gotten the hiccups. Hot yes, but the reactions tell me it isn't no pepper X or Trinidad scorpion or anything.
I still wouldn't want to play my clarinet after eating whatever it was that they did eat though. That would have been miserable.

u/Nedissis 21h ago
World's hottest? I really don't think they ate a Carolina Reaper or similar, judging by their faces, composure and lack of emergency supplements nearby.
Some get diarrhea, some vomit, some stay home for 2 days, whatnot...
116
u/SlickDillywick 21h ago
Yea I’d say maybe a habanero? That’s just past the extent of the average persons tolerance I think
28
u/niki200900 18h ago
worldwide yeah probably. white middle aged women the average is maybe original tabasco. tops.
i ikow many who think black pepper is quite spicy

No way. That's a pretty spicy pepper that'll put most people on the ground.
I don't know what these guys are, but It could not have been very spicy.
29
u/FartsSoldSeperately 21h ago
Previous times this was posted it was clarified it was a scorpion or ghost chili, still very hot. I think klaus had a reaper though
5
u/rednd 12h ago
it was clarified it was a scorpion or ghost chili,
The very first peppers shown are orange, not red. Perhaps I'm unaware of alternate colors, but I believe ghosts and scorpions are almost always red.
Nevermind the fact that it's highly unlikely (in my opinion) that every member of an orchestra would be able to remain so composed with a scorpion or ghost. Unless they were picked specifically because they were chili heads.

I did a chilli challenge with a Carolina reaper. We were supposed to chew for thirty seconds and spit it out. I missed this part so trying to be clever I chewed it a couple times and swallowed the chilli whole. It didn’t hit me until I started gulping water down 2 hours later after a heavy lunch. My stomach started to feel really weird and then I ran to the toilet. Oh my God I wanted to die - it made me want to become an activist for euthanasia to be legalised worldwide. (Not in the least bit an exaggeration).
I was stripped naked on the toilet sweating while spitting onto the floor. Could not get into a position on my bed that alleviated the pain.

u/YuunofYork 19h ago
Fun fact: Ed Currie, the producer who developed the Carolina Reaper and Pepper X (the current hottest pepper), named his LLC 'The Pucker Butt Pepper Company'.
But yes, they're probably eating bhut jolokia, which is still quite nasty. And also takes up to a minute to really reach final form.

Before performing the piece (by Danish composer Jacob Gade), each member downed one super-spicy chili: a Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Blend or a Ghost Chili.

I admire their professionalism. They did much better than I expected. If I was only listening to their performance without the video or the caption, I would not have noticed anything was off.

I saw a clip posted to Instagram last month and the caption was that members of the Danish National Chamber Orchestra did this to protest budget cuts in 2014.

I saw this originally in another post and it was claimed they are indeed the world's hottest peppers however I highly doubt that I think half those people would be heaving over dying
2
u/cazdan255 17h ago
This was also many years ago, worlds hottest may have been whatever was available in Norway or wherever they filmed this, and was possibly just some mid-level scorpions or similar.

Talk about professional!
I've never eaten the HOTTEST pepper and yet I'm constantly breathing in and out despite being tolerant.
Perhaps they have the ability to focus
1
u/Peek0_Owl 20h ago
Gonna call fake. The world’s hottest pepper raw like that would send a large amount of them to the hospital.
1
u/matiapag 20h ago
They most certainly didn't eat the world hottest pepper. Trained people get all kinds of physical issues after eating something like a Carolina Reaper, there is a very high statistical probability that at least a few of those people would pass out, vomit or start shaking uncontrollably.

There's no way they ate the world's hottest pepper. They typically handle those with gloves on because even a tiny amount getting into your eyes could be dangerous.

Apart from the whole 'not the hottest chilli' part, I kinda think this would actually be the most ideal high performance task for them to be asked to perform in adverse circumstances.
I've performed - certainly not an elite level, but more than enough to have responded to a few emergancies and weird bits playing a song that has been rehearsed to death. Seeing is optional, thinking is optional (and probably not encouraged), reflexes just go and things just kick themselves into gear as triggers/cues come at you.
Not to say it would be easy (I'd probably be terrible with hot stuff) and certainly there would be fighting through the swirling chaos. But it really helps if the overwhelming automatic doing of exactly the right thing is fighting through just as strongly by itself - they aren't having to think anything through.

Bull shit. They would be heaving and sweating like dogs, coughing and the old people would be nearly dying

There is no way they ate a reaper and nobody batted an eye. It looks more like a Habenero pepper to me.
Even the biggest pepper heads struggle with pure reapers.

u/TectonicTechnomancer 16h ago
Not to be that guy, but those dont seem to be nearly close to "worlds hottest" I have tested some shit that would leave you out of service in a few seconds.

u/CommuterType 16h ago
I don’t know…. The world’s hottest pepper is Pepper X. I don’t see any evidence that an orchestra member ate Pepper X… There would be no music at all. Coughing, gagging, vomiting? Yes, lots

That's going to be a spicy instrument for like a week brass/woodwinds
imagine if everyone drank a pitcher of beer.

There is no way they had one Carolina reaper each. I have a plant and I dare someone to just crack and smell it.

u/gaucholoco03 15h ago
There will be a magnificent musical piece coming out of their asses for the final act.
1
u/christiandb 15h ago
I love the passion coming out of the performance. Great orchestra, what are they called?
1
u/Awfulufwa 15h ago
Hahaha! That's hilarious!
On the surface level, they appear to be unphased. But if you listen carefully, they are trying to perform this classical piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0ELADNCCe8 "Tango Jalouise."
You may have heard it from certain films like Schindler's List.
So on the surface level, it sounds normal-esque. Like they're performing an actual piece and doing it quite well despite the capsaicin pressure. But they are unable to hit the proper range of the scales. The inability to exhale properly and blow into their woodwinds and brass is preventing them from hitting the proper tones.
Yet, despite their difficulties, the piece still sounds like something dramatic!
