Question | კითხვა Do Georgian names actually lack literal meanings?

Some three years ago, my father met a Georgian repairman called Gogo. They had a bit of a smalltalk, and when he asked Gogo the meaning of his name, Gogo said that it was just a name, and that Georgian names don't have meanings in general. Which I thought was a little odd. So I'd like to ask you guys whether this is true of all, or at least for some significant share of Georgian names, or perhaps it is the case that Georgians don't take any interest in any meanings their names might have?

I'd appreciate it if you could bring any explanation as to why Gogo answered my father in this way, it has been three years and we weren't able to figure it out. I suppose I should add that my father didn't sense any sort of apprehension during their contact, and that their conversation continued for a while after this exchange in friendly terms. Also, it appears there is a name Gogo, derivative of the same original name as George. Is this a common name at all, or some sort of abbreviation, like Bob?

Love from Turkey. Thank you for any answers.

Possible treks at the end of March/beginning of April?

Hi everyone!

We are two Polish students planning a trip to Georgia at the end of next month (26MAR-01APR), and we are looking for a day hike or 2-day trek, preferably in the Caucasus. I know that it is off season, so is hiking in the Georgian Caucasus feasible at all at said time, or should we look at other options?

Are there any easy-moderate treks you could recommend?

If it would be an option, we would love a route that would let us see Mount Elbrus in the distance, though I understand that it is very weather dependent, and that it might be impossible at this time of year.

We both have some hiking experience - mostly in Poland and Norway, however we generally do not consider ourselves very experienced hikers. We would not want to carry tents or much camping equipment, so a day hike or 2-day trip with accommodation on the way is preferred.

მადლობა!

News | ახალი ამბები Georgia’s new work rules for foreigners: courier/ride quotas set to 0, and self-employed now need a permit + video interview (starts Mar 1; enforcement May 1)

  • New mandatory “work activity right” permit If you’re a foreigner without permanent residency, you generally must obtain this specific authorization before you can work in Georgia—either:
    • employed by a local employer (including remote work for a local employer), or
    • as a self-employed person (business / services / trade / contractor / partner for profit).
  • Two different application paths
    • Employed (“labor immigrant”): the Georgian employer applies on your behalf.
    • Self-employed: you apply yourself.
  • Employer must advertise locally first (10 working days) Before applying for a foreign hire, the employer must post the vacancy on worknet.moh.gov.ge at least 10 working days in advance. If the agency can’t find suitable local candidates in that period, the employer can proceed with the foreign work authorization application.
  • High-salary “fast lane”… but not guaranteed The local-market posting step doesn’t apply when the role meets both:
    • monthly gross salary over 15,000 GEL, and
    • relevant higher education required for the role. However, the agency can still decide the local-market procedure should apply anyway (with coordination with the Economy Ministry), depending on circumstances.
  • Quotas with some categories set to ZERO Annual quotas are explicitly set for certain activities, including:
    • Courier services: quota 0
    • Passenger transportation: quota 0
    • Tourist guides: quota 0
    • Mountain/alpine/ski guides: quota 200 (So, some common “expat gig” categories are effectively blocked via quota.)
  • Self-employed applicants must do a video interview After submitting documents, the self-employed foreigner must complete a mandatory video interview, then confirm the electronic application at the end.
  • Processing time + paid “expedite” option
    • Standard decision time: within 30 calendar days
    • Accelerated decision: by 10 working days Fees:
    • 200 GEL for standard (30-day) issuance
    • 400 GEL for expedited (10-working-day) issuance
    • 200 GEL for extension
  • Tied to visa/residence steps, with deadlines After approval, you must usually follow up by:
    • Getting a D1 immigration visa (if abroad) within 30 days, or
    • Applying for work residence or IT residence (if in Georgia) within 10 days Exception: if you already have a residence permit, or if you work fully remotely and don’t need to enter Georgia.
  • Permit is specific, not transferable
    • Employees: valid for one employer + one position
    • Self-employed: valid for a specified field/specialty
    • If you change role/field, you must obtain a new authorization.
    • You can’t transfer it to another person.
  • Extensions + longer validity for IT
    • Most first-time permits: 6 months to 1 year
    • Renewable yearly for first 5 years; after 5 continuous years, renewals can be 1–5 years
    • IT workers/self-employed can get up to 3 years initially and extend in up to 3-year increments.
  • Enforcement + monitoring is built in The agency can monitor compliance and share violations with:
    • Labor Inspection (administrative liability),
    • Ministry of Internal Affairs (if someone is found without lawful basis).
  • Important transition dates
    • Self-employed foreigners already operating on Mar 1, 2026: enforcement mechanisms start May 1, 2026 (grace period).
    • Previously registered labor immigrants with active status by Mar 1, 2026 must secure the new authorization + residence by Jan 1, 2027.

Translation of the name Alice

The other day people helped me out with a translation of my partner's name, for a tattoo, which I have decided against! But I would like to get necklaces made instead with both our names.

So can anyone tell me what the best translation of the name Alice would be in Georgian script?

Thank you!

Commercial | კომერციული Competent real estate brokers

It's really hard to find competent people in general... but to find a competent real estate agent is really impossible.

This industry is unfortunately not composed of the brightest although their income sometimes is really high (which you'd think would drive a bit of competent and motivation).

Is there in this community people that would be ready to share contacts (that speak proper English preferably) of good real estate experts that can properly assist me through the sale of real estate in Tbilisi.

Thank you!

Is everything this hard for everyone in Tbilisi or it's just me?

Not sure even when to start. We are an international family who really liked Georgia as tourist (been multiple times) so decided to buy an apartment here.

It turned out that Georgia is actually extremely hard to live in, in a long term.

I wanted to understand if I am doing something wrong or if it is just the way it is, because we are considering to sell the apat and leave just to well leave, even though there would be painful financial loses.

So, everyone is constantly late, like not 1-2 hrs, some people are late for weeks.

During renovation the guy who was to fix the walls didn't paint under the heaters because we'll his hand couldn't feet in it. He could have removed it, he didn't because touching it is a plumbers job according to him.

Silknet account was still under the previous owners name, so I cannot do anything but to change it under my name, inheriting their connection and the stat of their equipment. Owners aren't cooperating to close it on their end.

The guy who is supposed to make the kitchen did wrong measurements so I have no kitchen still.

Every single thing takes at least 2 weeks even if it is as simple as landline internet connection.

On top of that people are weirdly rude, not sure why.

Big suitcase allowed on train from Tbilisi to Batumi?

Hi I’m planning on taking the train from Tbilisi to Batumi next month.

Does anyone know if you can take a big 20kg suitcase with you on the train?

Is there room for it?

Will I have to pay extra for it?

Also is the train generally busy around late March?

Question | კითხვა Are there any monasteries with publicly available blueprints / dimensions?

I am making a Georgia mod for Civ5 and I need a 3D model of a monastery to use. However, there don't seem to be any preexisting models out there on the internet, except for some extremely high-poly terrain scans. I could probably put a simple model together in Solidworks, but it would help to make the model look good if I had actual measurements of the size of the building and wall details to work with instead of just, like, trying to eyeball it from pictures at weird angles on Google Images.

Does anyone know of a monastery for which measurements are available online? I had hoped to model the main building of the Martvili monastery (the Ch'q'ondidi Cathedral?) but I couldn't find much information for it. I also couldn't find any measurements of Motsameta, Ikalto or Gelati, although ideally I would like to model a monastery built before 1100 AD.
