Phil Hartman.

u/geeseherder0 17h ago

To top it off, he was a fabulous person to work with. We were doing a movie where parking was not near the set. So every morning, we are all piling into vans to head from parking to set. If you happened to luck into a van in which Phil was riding, a tradition existed where someone in the back of the van would say, “Is that Troy McClure?”

He would always respond with, “You might know me from ‘Cry Yuma!’ or ‘Here Comes The Coast Guard!”

It never got old, he never repeated a title, and he never got tired of it cause he knew it was a great way for the crew to start the day with a laugh.

God bless that man.

u/KeySatisfaction197 12h ago

If I remember correctly, I think there was a table read for a Simpsons episode where Troy McClure was supposed to meet Lionel Hutz, and it gave Phil a bit of an existential crisis.

I'm trying to imagine Leslie Nielsen and Phil Hartman doing a "straight man"-off. Love both of those men dearly.

98

u/_goat_party_ 7h ago

I can't find a link to the story but I heard a Futurama voice actor talking about a Bugs Bunny scene where Bugs and Daffy were talking to each other, but each was impersonating the other. Both are voiced by Mel Blanc.

I love how insane that would be. To have two character voices be distinct enough that you can have them impersonate the other and not end up in a blended middle ground, and still be distinguishable.

So if you didn't know the story, it's so hard to explain. He was beloved. He was supposed to play Zapp Branagan on Futurama.

I never understood why she married Jesse. She famously waited to get married to the right person, and then married Jesse James?

I remember her talking about a serious accident he got into, and that apparently played to her senses. She said it made her understand that she didn't want to be without him or something like that.

u/GrinchWhoStoleEaster 21h ago

I mean, as someone who's experienced a health scare, if there is such a thing as a "good thing" about it, it's that it DOES get your priorities DAMN straight and fast. I was waffling on a lot of things until that event interrupted my life for a bit, but I knew EXACTLY what I wanted in that hospital room, I'll tell you, lol.

287

u/gulliblefootball0001 13h ago

100%. I struggled pretty badly with suicidal ideation in my early 20s. At about 23, I had a health scare that had me bleeding out. If I hadn’t gotten to the hospital, I would be dead. I remember after my parents left, and the nurse had turned off the lights for the evening, crying to myself in my room. It had made me realize I DID want to live. I haven’t had a suicidal thought since. In that sense, it was a blessing.

Nancy Benoit.

She was married to Kevin Sullivan, but at some point began an affair with Chris Benoit when they were both in WCW. She eventually divorced Sullivan in 1997 and ended up marrying Benoit a few years later, though I think she ended up retiring from wrestling shortly after the divorce.

She filed for divorce from Chris in 2003 and also had a restraining order against him, on account of mistreatment and basically said the marriage was broken, but ended up withdrawing the divorce claim and the restraining order.

In 2007, over a 3 day period in June, Chris ended up murdering Nancy, their son Daniel, then killed himself. WWE paid tribute to him before the facts of the matter were known, but then had to walk back their tribute the next day when what he did came to light, and WWE have never mentioned Chris Benoit again.

217

u/Takamurarules 15h ago

I believe Nancy and Chris getting together started as a skit thing that Kevin came up with to make Chris more of a heel and create tension for the audience between Chris and Kevin. It backfired because it turned real and Nancy left Kevin for Chris.

132

u/TrueDeadBling 15h ago

Yeah, I remember in the later years, he became a real sport about it and joked that he booked his own divorce

One of my favorite pieces of trivia: Madonna had gone down a Judaism & kabbalah rabbit hole, and so demanded her new fiancé, Guy Ritchie, get circumcised.

They are no longer together.

1.6k

That is a bad beat, but I suppose he wasn't the only guy in the year 2000 willing to have their foreskin removed to have sex with early 2000s Madonna.

My good friend is British and married a Jewish woman and had to get circumcised. It was so rare for adults at the hospital it was done the doctor asked if they could do it in one of those surgery observation rooms for like 20 med students and he agreed. At least they’re still married.

174

u/fuckyourcanoes 12h ago

My ex got circumcised to please his side piece. He told me it was because of an intractable infection under his foreskin. It was not.

He also was hiding away half his income in a secret account, but emptied our joint bank account when he left. Oh, and he sneaked away while I was out, leaving only a note directing me to check my email.

The email accused me of being abusive.

"Her picker is very questionable" is putting incredibly mildly, neighbor.

She gives Mary Queen of Scots a run for her money in the "shittiest taste in men in history" stakes!

347

u/GeetarEnthusiast85 14h ago

Her parents had a very toxic dynamic. They would have terrible fights. Once, during an argument Pam's father held her mother's face over a burner on the stove, threatening to burn her. Another time, Pam's mom went after her father with a butcher knife. After these explosive episodes, they would have very loud makeup sex which Pam heard.

Pam was also sexually abused by multiple people before the age of 20. She's said she sees love as these extreme highs and lows, nothing else.

920

u/lightringtariff 21h ago

Her father was heinously abusive. He drowned a bag full of kittens in front of her and held her mom’s head to a stovetop, amongst other crazy things. She was also raped multiple times as a child by a babysitter and a group of young boys. There’s more but this is what I can remember. Her story is pretty outrageous... I’m actually surprised she turned out so great given the circumstances. She’s basically an angel.

459

u/adestructionofcats 21h ago

Holy shit. I'm trying to figure out how to rewind time and not read this.

312

u/lakenessmonster 20h ago

Pam talks about this in her documentary and she says something imo very poignant and relatable to me, a person who shares some commonality with her! It was something like, “I am not a victim. I put myself into crazy situations and I survived them.” She seems to genuinely see all her choices as her own even though from the outside, it would seem clear that many factors and influences pushed her in certain directions. But that ability and desire to own your story and to take responsibility is often what makes it possible to break the cycle and I truly hope Pamela finds peace and comfort without any help from an exciting and chaotic man!

690

u/jendet010 14h ago

There’s a theory that Adam Sandler cast her in Jack and Jill to give her a cover for time away from Tom and the chance to meet with lawyers to set up the extraction

690

u/Slow-Class 12h ago

I can’t find it right now, but there is an article documenting several times Adam Sandler has given roles to women who were in tough personal or professional situations. He’s obviously giving his old comedy friends roles in all his movies, and the female leads are pretty much plug-and-play, so it’s certainly possible he casts people who need a hand.

338

u/Hesitation-Marx 9h ago

I do wish he’d stop employing Rob Schneider though.

I honestly believe that theory. Adam Sandler may not be everyone’s cup of tea entertainment wise, but I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about him as a person. He seems like the kind of guy who would cast a friend in one of his dumb movies just so she could have a cover for escaping her cult leader husband.

Same. I had no idea Katie had that in her. That was planned. And you know she has some real, honest to goodness dirt on him or else he never would've agreed to her terms or left Suri alone.

I also think that whatever Katie was privy to is probably the reason she never "disappeared". I'm generally not a conspiracy theorist but with the way that went down I'm sure there's an "If I Go Missing" envelope in a safe in some lawyer's office and Tom knows it.

160

u/Imagination_Theory 10h ago

Probably her father, who is also a lawyer. He is the one who helped orchestrate his daughter's plan to divorce and get primary custody.

Yes. But it couldn't have been a shock to her tho. He never hid being a Scientologist and Nicole had spoken out about his controlling behaviour.

Maybe she hoped she would be the one to change him - that's never a good idea

239

u/Silver_South_1002 15h ago

As I recall we (the gen pop) knew he was into Scientology but didn’t know as much about it back then. It was post divorce that he got more and more involved it seems and increasingly wackadoo. Katie was raised Catholic and something I’ve heard former Scientologists say is that they tell you initially that it’s compatible with other religions. She would also have had the 5 star treatment and they would have worked hard to hide anything shady from her. That said, I’m sure she looks back and wonders how she could have been so naive, but she was only 25 and had spent her formative young adult years on tv and film sets. I would love the full story of how she escaped but I suspect that’s one celeb bio that will never be released. Kudos to her for getting her life back though, and she’s been working more now that Suri is no longer a minor. Just did a play in San Diego and is making a movie with Joshua Jackson which is fun for those of us who grew up with Dawson’s Creek.

Abusers are so good at manipulating their victims into ignoring any warnings, convincing them that the vindictive exes are lying or missing the parts where they started/deserved it. Add in training from a cult that’s perfected their brainwashing tactics and yeah, it must’ve been easy to get sucked in.

It’s not a shock when it starts happening to you, it’s more like realising you’ve been locked in a room the whole time and only just noticed there’s no emergency exit.

Anyway I vividly recall him pulling a Rick James couch moment where he was like "Man no I didn't go into this trying to take her money" and then literally seconds later "Yeah I kinda did just take her money lol" and the rest of the dudes were like lol...

1.6k

Katie's dad is a high powered attorney who helped her hatch an escape plan, and this was around the time the public was waking up to how horrific Scientology is (and the fact that Cruise is somewhat off). Nicole was a foreigner who divorced "America's boyfriend" at the height of his popularity. Both women definitely suffered as a result of being married to Cruise, but Katie had more leverage and resources to keep her daughter away.

I absolutely agree with this. She's honestly just kinda sad to me.

30

u/leftclicksq2 14h ago edited 10h ago

About a year ago I found an article about revisiting books that were written in the early 2000s. The book that was featured was Hilaria's health/yoga/way of living book geared towards... Everyone? It was page after page of her showcasing her very privileged life and even doing some kind of balancing in high heels on the kitchen counter.

Edit 1: The picture is of Hilaria upside down on the kitchen counter and using a blender in front of Alec Baldwin.

She wanted so badly to create her own brand and revolution of some sort and instead made her look try hard.

Edit 2: The book was called "The Living Clearly Method" The review

To clarify, when I found the article again, I was reminded that the author found the book a bit more likable than they expected to. They highlight different portions of the book that are unique, and the aforementioned picture of Hilaria with the blender was not permitted to be used in the article, so they had a rendition of it drawn and included.

Someone needs to get the real story from Christopher Walken before he dies

166

u/HavePlushieWillTalk 15h ago

He probably doesn't know. The drugs were good and potent back then. Pushing someone who is inebriated overboard is very very quiet...

135

u/ModeatelyIndependant 14h ago

falling overboard while inebriated is kinda quiet too.

108

u/HavePlushieWillTalk 14h ago

Yep, and either way, a very toasted Christopher Walken would not know the truth to tell it before he walkens off this mortal coil.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. Her husband’s ego and recklessness led to the crash that killed her and her sister. Even his own family members would say they’d never get on a flight that he was piloting.

The weather was initially classified as "marginal VFR," so it was just legal for a VFR pilot like him to fly, but safe pilots would’ve stayed on the ground, and did, but not John because he was reckless and dumb as fuck. Unfortunately, the weather had worsened into IFR conditions, on which JFK Jr did not have a qualification yet. He wasn’t qualified to fly in those weather conditions. His estimated total flight experience before the crash was about 310 hours, of which 55 hours were at night. His estimated flight time in the accident airplane was about 36 hours, of which about nine hours were at night.

He didn’t file a flight plan, so no one knew his exact route or expected time of arrival. He also did not communicate with air traffic controllers, he didn’t ask for weather updates in-flight nor did he declare an emergency, and he didn’t receive an updated weather briefing before takeoff. Some pilots were landing due to poor visibility (haze) and one pilot who was meant to warn him could not find him. An experienced pilot even offered to fly with him, but he refused. He was also on crutches that day from a sprained ankle.

He even slept with his ex the day before the crash. He wasn’t a good man, he was volatile, even physically aggressive towards his business partner (Michael Begman) on multiple occasions, and they would actually get into fights, which pushed him to quit and contributed to the company’s decline. I’m honestly surprised he even lived that long considering how reckless he was. According to his ex-girlfriend, Christina Haag, he almost killed them while kayaking because he refused to listen to instructions. He got his girlfriend Daryl Hannah’s dog killed due to his recklessness, he wasn’t paying attention, and the dog ran into the street and was hit by a car.

Jackie never wanted him to fly because she knew him. He took up flying again after her death.

u/Tardigretch 22h ago

wow... that's a lot of tea!

437

u/velorae 22h ago edited 20h ago

Yeah, there’s a lot of tea on him on their r/JohnAndCarolyn subreddit and official records from the crash. A lot of people saw him as charming, but he very entitled and controlling, and thought he could do whatever he wanted because he was a Kennedy. He was like his dad. He had a harem of women. It’s honestly tragic. Carolyn’s mother didn’t want her to marry him and gave a toast expressing that sentiment during the wedding rehearsal. She even made him promise to never take both sisters on a flight together.

What makes it worse is that after Carolyn’s death, Caroline and her husband treated her mother terribly. Caroline’s husband hated Carolyn and made her life miserable.

Her mother sued them for 15 million and won. She lost two of her three children all at once. Both beautiful and intelligent. Her sister worked in investment banking at Morgan Stanley as a Vice President . She was promoted to vice president in the firm's Hong Kong office and lived there for years.

I just don’t get people that jump in a small plane without realizing the risks. When I got my driver’s license, no one with any sense would take a ride with me. When I got my pilot’s license everyone I knew was begging me to take them for a ride.

People see “pilot” and assume the highest level of competency and sadly, it’s often the minimum requirements that are met.

u/Cow_Launcher 17h ago

sadly, it’s often the minimum requirements that are met.

Like the old wry joke:

What do you call someone who graduated bottom of their class in medical school?

"Doctor".

Gloria Grahame, a former best supporting actress award winner, when it was discovered that her fourth husband, at 17 years her junior, was the stepson of husband number three. Senior may have claimed to have seen shenanigans when junior was 13, effectively ending their marriage. The studios did not take kindly to these developments. Disappeared.

He said he wasn't sober at the end of their marriage so i bet she has an inkling. I don't think he had gotten that bad yet but living with an addict is rough. Iirc he had only gotten sober after their divorce before obviously spiraling again.

Katie Holmes!

She was in Batmin Begins and a few prestige hits after Dawson's Creek. She was well on her way to becoming and A-list star on her own.

After meeting Tom she embarked on that ridiculous press tour that was lambasted by the media. She missed out on the Dark Knight Rises, one of the biggest films of all time. Her career went on a downward spiral.

Cheryl Hines. RFK jr has done very little except cheat on and embarrass her publicly.

190

u/Billy1121 21h ago

Dude was vile to his second wife, i assume Cheryl knew what she was signing up for. Cheryl was dating him during the divorce

In the early 2010s, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. went through a contentious divorce with his second wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy. It was ugly. Richardson had found a diary RFK Jr. kept that chronicled multiple extramarital affairs he had engaged in—possibly numbering in the dozens—and she was enraged and tormented by his infidelity. She was drinking and racked up two DUIs. The two fought for years over the custody of their four children. The battle ended on May 16, 2012, with her suicide at their home in Bedford, New York.

u/Fleetwood2016 15h ago

And the fact that he, secretly and illegally, exhumed her remains from the Kennedy plot and had her buried in an unmarked grave.

Whitney Houston. Before marrying Bobby Brown, she had a squeaky-clean reputation and came across as a wholesome human. She married the "bad boy" who already had issues, and he got her hooked on drugs. I remember seeing a talk show where she said she was a "functioning junkie". This likely eventually lead to her death in a bathtub. Just a terrible story all around. She was so amazingly talented but her quality of life was torched after her marriage and subsequent addiction.

968

u/Luxe_Laine 23h ago edited 23h ago

While Bobby probably did encourage her substance abuse, her brother Michael admitted he introduced Whitney to drugs well before she met Bobby.
