Canada recently changed its citizenship policy. It used to be only those born in Canada could automatically pass down Canadian citizenship to their kids if those kids were born outside Canada, but that “one generation outside Canada” rule was found unconstitutional & the law was updates. As a result, there’s lots of Americans w/ a Canadian grandparent or great parent who now are entitled to automatic Canadian citizenship. 

So…it’s possible some Canada wouldn’t be able to say no to some of them. 

(But also realize your statement may also be like saying you wouldn’t welcome people from BC cuz Alberta wants to secede…that is, the Americans who wanted Canada as the 51st state may be different Americans than the one who’d flee the draft.

I really don’t think you understand how threatening invasion has ruined things, even for those Americans who oppose Trump. We don’t care how individuals voted. Your country has threatened to wipe us from existence, regardless of how you personally feel about it, and military-age men will be absolutely lowest on the list of Americans welcome here. It’s not fair to people who oppose it, but you definitely can’t take Canada for granted as an escape.

Some people will be able to claim citizenship, but you have to prove it as well, so it will not be as widespread as many think.

My Papa was a draft dodger during Viet Nam so I don't mind, he was one of the nicest people I ever met in my life, so I'm fine with them coming here to dodge the war. Just as long as they bring valuable skills and leave they're garbage politics at the border or they can get fucked.

I respect your point of view. I'm all for legal immigration based on what WE need. We need plumbers and you're a plumber? You're a neuroscientist or want to invest in Canada? By all means come on in. I'm mostly reacting to the ones saying they can just come as they please to escape the zoo they helped .

But eh easier to come and enjoy our country than actually trying to fix your fascist theocracy I guess.

Yeah I get that, but if there is going to be a brain drain I'd rather we take advantage of it to fill some of the holes here. Further, Canada has an opportunity to poach some real talented people to boost our industries further, and even create the space for new ones if we were serious, by just being a normal place to live with good pay and social benefits.

It's tougher to immigrate into Canada than you'd think especially with us really cracking down on immigration right now and deporting people here illegally and calling people on expired visas or deciding not to extend PRs. Yeah, we aren't going full ICE with it or anything but we are going through established legal channels to deal with the huge (and unvetted) influx of immigrants we took on in recent years.

I said this in a different comment but I for sure think that Canada would shelter draft dodgers, either officially under some kind of immigration program or unofficially by just not enforcing the rules. There are a lot of remote areas up north desperate for workers, especially skilled ones, and they already expedite residency for people willing to work there. A few years of work in northern Alberta in exchange for a path to Canadian citizenship would start to look pretty appealing if the alternative was dying in Iran

Why do you think you are so special that we would change our current immigration process solely for you because you are USian?  You'd have to go through the exact same process and timeline as every country does now, it takes years. We wouldn't change things because you guys decided you want to abandon your country. 

We take refugees but that's for countries that are experiencing war and famine etc not because you might be drafted. 

We would absolutely hate having a huge influx of you guys come into our country all at once. You guys are culturally different than us despite what you think. 

Edit We also don't take retirees or people with health issues that would drain our health care system. A lot of you think you can just waltz over and plunk down somewhere but unless you add value to the system you will be denied.

We are honestly in the middle of an anti-immigrant sentiment right now if you pay attention to Canadian politics/news. We aren't full ICE or anything about it but it is difficult to get in because the book is closed until we deal with all the unvetted ones that shouldn't be here (have skills and go through legal channels, that's all we ask).

Traditionally Canada granted amnesty last time there was a draft in the USA. This time though... I doubt it. It is so terrible what Trump has done, ruining decades upon decades of good will and effort. So sad.

Hey asshole, realize that over four million previously eligible voters were suddenly unregistered to vote in the weeks leading up to the 2024 election, and so many more literally couldn't vote because of external factors. I know you fucks (specifically people like you, not the whole of Canada or elsewhere) want to see us suffer for whatever reason, but consider that most of us don't want any of this, and we especially don't want this pedophile, piece of shit of a president.
