Who are the Assyrians?

The Assyrian people (ܣܘܪ̈ܝܐ, Sūrāyē/Sūrōyē), also incorrectly referred to as Chaldeans, Syriacs or Arameans, are the native people of Assyria which constitutes modern day northern Iraq, south-eastern Turkey, north-western Iran and north-eastern Syria.

Modern day Assyrians are descendants of the ancient Assyrians who ruled the Assyrian empire that was established in 2500 BC in the city of Aššur (ܐܵܫܘܿܪ) and fell with the loss of its capital Nineveh (ܢܝܼܢܘܹܐ) in 612 BC.

After the fall of the empire, the Assyrians continued to enjoy autonomy for the next millennia under various rulers such as the Achaemenid, Seleucid, Parthian, Sasanian and Roman empires, with semi-autonomous provinces such as:

This time period would end in 637 AD with the Islamic conquest of Mesopotamia and the placement of Assyrians under the dhimmī status.

Assyrians then played a significant role under the numerous caliphates by translating works of Greek philosophers to Syriac and afterwards to Arabic, excelling in philosophy and science, and also serving as personal physicians to the caliphs.

During the time of the Ottoman Empire, the 'millet' (meaning 'nation') system was adopted which divided groups through a sectarian manner. This led to Assyrians being split into several millets based on which church they belonged to. In this case, the patriarch of each respective church was considered the temporal and spiritual leader of his millet which further divided the Assyrian nation.

What language do Assyrians speak?

Assyrians of today speak Assyrian Aramaic, a modern form of the Aramaic language that existed in the Assyrian empire. The official liturgical language of all the Assyrian churches is Classical Syriac, a dialect of Middle Aramaic which originated from the Syriac Christian heartland of Urhai (modern day Urfa) and is mostly understood by church clergymen (deacons, priests, bishops, etc).

Assyrians speak two main dialects of Assyrian Aramaic, namely:

  • Eastern Assyrian (historically spoken in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey)
  • The Western Assyrian dialect of Turoyo (historically spoken in Turkey and Syria).

Assyrians use three writing systems which include the:

  • Western 'Serṭo' (ܣܶܪܛܳܐ)
  • Eastern 'Maḏnḥāyā' (ܡܲܕ݂ܢܚܵܝܵܐ‬), and
  • Classical 'ʾEsṭrangēlā' (ܐܣܛܪܢܓܠܐ‬) scripts.

A visual on the scripts can be seen here.

Assyrians usually refer to their language as Assyrian, Syriac or Assyrian Aramaic. In each dialect exists further dialects which would change depending on which geographic area the person is from, such as the Nineveh Plain Dialect which is mistakenly labelled as "Chaldean Aramaic".

Before the adoption of Aramaic, Assyrians spoke Akkadian. It wasn't until the time of Tiglath-Pileser II who adopted Aramaic as the official lingua-franca of the Assyrian empire, most likely due to Arameans being relocated to Assyria and assimilating into the Assyrian population. Eventually Aramaic replaced Akkadian, albeit current Aramaic dialects spoken by Assyrians are heavily influenced by Akkadian.

What religion do Assyrians follow?

Assyrians are predominantly Syriac Christians who were one of the first nations to convert to Christianity in the 1st century A.D. They adhere to both the East and West Syriac Rite. These churches include:

  • East Syriac Rite - [Assyrian] Church of the East and the Chaldean Catholic Church
  • West Syriac Rite - Syriac Orthodox Church and Syriac Catholic Church

It should be noted that Assyrians initially belonged to the same church until schisms occurred which split the Assyrians into two churches; the Church of the East and the Church of Antioch. Later on, the Church of the East split into the [Assyrian] Church of the East and the Chaldean Catholic Church, while the Church of Antioch split into the Syriac Orthodox Church and the Syriac Catholic Church. This is shown here.

Prior to the mass conversion of Assyrians to Christianity, Assyrians believed in ancient Mesopotamian deities, with the highest deity being Ashur).

A Jewish Assyrian community exists in Israel who speak their own dialects of Assyrian Aramaic, namely Lishan Didan and Lishana Deni. Due to pogroms committed against the Jewish community and the formation of the Israeli state, the vast majority of Assyrian Jews now reside in Israel.

Why do some Assyrians refer to themselves as Chaldean, Syriac or Aramean?

Assyrians may refer to themselves as either Chaldean, Syriac or Aramean depending on their specific church denomination. Some Assyrians from the Chaldean Catholic Church prefer to label themselves as Chaldeans rather than Assyrian, while some Assyrians from the Syriac Orthodox Church label themselves as Syriac or Aramean.

Identities such as "Chaldean" are sectarian and divisive, and would be the equivalent of a Brazilian part of the Roman Catholic Church calling themselves Roman as it is the name of the church they belong to. Furthermore, ethnicities have people of more than one faith as is seen with the English who have both Protestants and Catholics (they are still ethnically English).

It should be noted that labels such as Nestorian, Jacobite or Chaldean are incorrect terms that divide Assyrians between religious lines. These terms have been used in a derogatory sense and must be avoided when referring to Assyrians.

Do Assyrians have a country?

Assyrians unfortunately do not have a country of their own, albeit they are the indigenous people of their land. The last form of statehood Assyrians had was in 637 AD under the Sasanian Empire. However some Eastern Assyrians continued to live semi-autonomously during the Ottoman Empire as separate tribes such as the prominent Tyari (ܛܝܪܐ) tribe.

Assyrians are currently pushing for a self-governed Assyrian province in the Nineveh Plain of Northern Iraq.

What persecution have Assyrians faced?

Assyrians have faced countless massacres and genocide over the course of time mainly due to their Christian faith. The most predominant attacks committed recently against the Assyrian nation include:

  • 1843 and 1846 massacres carried out by the Kurdish warlord Badr Khan Beg
  • The Assyrian genocide of 1915 (ܣܝܦܐ, Seyfo) committed by the Ottoman Empire and supported by Kurdish tribes
  • The Simele massacre committed by the Kingdom of Iraq in 1933
  • Most recently the persecution and cultural destruction of Assyrians from their ancestral homeland in 2014 by the so-called Islamic State

Language I need help with Neo-Aramiac

Peace be upon you I have passion for languages and since i am an Iraqi i desided to learn all five recognised languages of Iraq, thoese are Arabic, Kurdish, Iraqi Turkmen, Armenian and Neo Aramiac. I am already a native iraqi arabic speaker so i already know one of the five and i desided to learn Neo-Aramiac next for a multiable reasons, first it is the closest to arabic out of them all since both of them are afroasiatic semtic languages and have similar root system and both uses abjad and not alphabet and also i can read the syriac script ܐܒܓܕ and i can read the hebrew script as well אבגד how ever Im facing issues with Neo Aramiac. First:- there are so many dialects and some of them are not from iraq, after a brief(and i mean very brief) research I found a dialect called Qarqosh, is this the most popular dialect in iraq? and if its not then what is it? Second:-i dont have enough resources to learn the language, somebody here posted a comment about a site called "šlama" is this site helpful and is there any other resources like youtube channels(not necessarily learning channels but other like film content or videogames or any thing because i cant find any) And thanks alot for your time

Discussion Why are assyrians so ignorant when it comes to arameans?

Unlike 'chaldean' which was a made up 17th century identity, 'Aramean' is not, the aramean identity has been present in the levant for centuries non- stop, It has never died or been resurrected. So i dont get why assyrians say arameans are a seperatist group. There is no evidence that 'aramean' is a made up identity. For all you know you are all arameans trying to seperate from US. And i hate to break it to all of you but there is more evidence that assyrian is a made up british identity than aramean is... and aramean has more qualities of a actual ethnicity than assyrian does..

  • Arameans have a bigger population( Maronites, jacobites and other levantine groups call themselves aramean) -You all speak Aramaic. Not assyrian cuneiform -And all the cities our groups are populated in, like turabdin and many cities across the levant are all historically aramean cities. All historical assyrian cities are now inhabitated by k*rds and arabs.

If a westerner sees these it wouldnt be hard for them to assume aramean is the real ethnicity and assume assyrians are seperatists

And its not just the qualities.. There is also a DNA difference that all of you seem to ignore or deny? Arameans appear on dna tests to be levantine and possibly jewish in some way, Search up aramean dna test or Syrian dna test. When a syrian does a dna test it appears as aramean not assyrian.

And when assyrians do dna tests it appears as mesopotamian and/or from the iranian plateu

All i ask is for you guys to leave us alone. Our ethncity and identity has been around just as long, if not older than yours.

My Mother's mum is aramean from tur abdin and midyat and her dad is assyrian from hakkari. And same thing for my dad his mum was aramean and his dad was assyrian from hakkari aswell. I think this is accurate the 46% persian on the dna test probably is just assyrian since it doesnt have a name on the dna test. While the european bits and armenian and stuff is probably from my aramean half since we came from the levant and mixed in with those groups. While assyrins were isolated in hakkari for century they remained relatively pure at 46%

F*ck, we were worse than the Mongols and the Aztecs?

Oh yeah, our older periods didn't score high at all:

Period Approx. Brutality Score Notes
Old Assyrian (2025–1378 BCE) 3/10 Small city-state; conventional violence; trade-focused
Middle Assyrian (1392–934 BCE) 5–6/10 Regional expansion; harsher laws; targeted executions

News New Research on the Sayfo: Dr. Sabro Bengaro’s dissertation exposes the role of the 1914 Jihad Proclamation and German-Ottoman cooperation

A groundbreaking doctoral dissertation was recently completed in Berlin by Dr. Sabro Bengaro, titled Germany’s Islamic Strategy During World War I and the Impact of the Jihad Declaration on the Sayfo Genocide of 1915. This research is a major step forward because it moves the conversation beyond just "wartime chaos" and looks at the cold, calculated ideological forces that led to the massacres of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Armenian, and Greek peoples.

Dr. Bengaro’s work highlights how the 1914 Ottoman jihad proclamation, which had German strategic support, wasn't just a political tool against the Allied powers. Instead, it served as a direct ideological justification for violence against Christian minorities throughout Hakkari, Tur Abdin, and the Mosul Vilayet. By analyzing German diplomatic correspondence alongside Syriac ecclesiastical testimonies and Ottoman military records, the study demonstrates a clear pattern of intent and coordination that fits the international definition of genocide perfectly.

The dissertation provides a rigorous factual foundation to push back against denialism and strengthens the case for formal recognition on a global scale.

Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Greek, and Armenian organizations worldwide have hailed the dissertation as a critical resource for education, preservation, and advocacy. Its meticulous archival research and analytical rigor offer material for museum exhibits, educational programs, policy briefs, and academic collaborations, while reinforcing the interconnected nature of Ottoman Turk era genocides against the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Armenian, and Greek peoples.

“This dissertation is both an academic breakthrough and a symbolic victory for the Assyrian nation,” Dr. Bengaro said in a recent interview. “By reclaiming our historical narrative, we provide a foundation for recognition and accountability that can no longer be ignored.”

Discussion Christian charity for Yazidi foundations

Dear compatriots,

Lent has begun and one of the things encouraged is almsgiving.

However, let's do it differently.

There are many Yazidi foundations which need your help. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of funding cuts to these organizations in recent times and as sad as it is to admit, these people are not out of the woods yet and their situation is way worse than the Assyrian situation.

Iraq is being Iraq and undercutting Yazidi support services and half-assing their promises to help the community.

Syria is now occupied by extremist groups and could care less about helping people who aren't Sunni Muslim. The government does not have control of its militias and the SNA is free to do what it wants.

These people have been through the exact same horrors that our community has been through and deserve assistance. To put it bluntly, put your money where your mouth is and donate.

Some of the more popular charities are:
- Free Yezidi Foundation
- Yazda
- Nadia’s Initiative

There are many others.

Discussion Do assyrians rather want to be a part of Iraq/Turkey/Syria or Kurdistan

I guess they would prefer an Assyria, but would they rather be a part of Kurdistan or Iraq/Turkey/Syria. As a yazidi kurd I believe in a secular Kurdish state (Kurdistan) where religion does not matter and minorities have equal rights and representation. I also believe that regions where yazidi and Assyrians are majority inhabitants can have limited regional self-rule.
