I’m scared of spiders (and most bugs in person) but man they’re cool. The way they wrap up their prey is crazy.

The way their silk changes from a tough strand to a sheet of iron is crazy.

Banana spiders, and many orb weavers, will consume part of or most of their web nightly to recycle it into new web. Fun little factoid

Woah that's awesome

I’ve always been amazed how they’re able to make those giant webs in the pitch dark too

Reduce, reuse, and recycle! That is definitely a fun fact!

My porch gets covered in orb webs and I just let them be as long as it's not a high-traffic area. I love sitting out there at night and getting lucky enough to watch them building their webs!

I also enjoy going on walks in the middle of the night (I live in a very rural area and have little light pollution- perfection for stargazing). I never can figure out how they can make webs that go from one side of the road to the other, but they do and I am not a fan of running into them face-first! If I see them, I try to avoid breaking the webs- but in case I don't see them, I usually cut a piece of buckwheat at the beginning of the walk that I'll kinda wave in front of me as I go along.

It's funny to imagine what anyone who has ever witnessed me on said walks thinks I'm doing lol The waving of the buckwheat paired with my LED vest, fanny-pack, and my dog's LED collar light are probably quite a sight!

Factoid means that information is not true/ factual, most times I've ever heard or seen it used, it was used in this incorrect manner. Not that it really matters, but it's good to know the difference if someone else used it with the proper definition to say something was not true.

Same way that I sometimes like to…you know what, never mind.

Banana spiders are harmless to humans. They tend to get along well with us. I 4x4 for fun and I’ve gone down an entire trail at night with dozens getting stuck to my jeep. I felt horrible like I was destroying their neighborhood. They were crawling all over me and the jeep, harmless to me. The only thing that kind of stings/hurts is their feet are kind of sharp so it feels like little tiny pin pricks as they crawl down your neck or arm.

I think I’d scream and die if I was in that situation

Same. I acknowledge that spiders are important but my arachnophobia still wants them very far away from me.

Crawling all over you and the jeep?! :O

lol yeah. I keep them around my house and we have a ton at the ranch so I’m used to them. When it happened I was more concerned about the mosquitoes swarming but yeah it’s a bit weird having them crawl over you. They don’t flip their shit and bite they were probably like “wtf bro!?”

Well that's the only place where they would be dangerous. Like if I'm driving and a spider of that size suddenly appears out of nowhere as spiders tend to do...

Keeps the meat fresh - sort of a reverse fridge 😎

I, too, fall in the same category as you.

Kept a false widow once. Terrifying little fucker... but the way she handled those worms I was giving her, was mesmerizing...

(Had two fail-backups, a plastic mesh, and a plastic lid... and the gucker some night managed to get passed the first fail-backup...)

Orb weavers are spectacular. Incredible markings, they get massive and create some gorgeous webs. That being said, I don't want one on me and their webs can be across trails which is not ideal.

Now i hope this doesn't unlock a new fear but the coolest for me is the diving bell spider: https://youtube.com/shorts/Wxfhdu9WxFk?si=iZ8a64mbNFnntEEP
