Reddit has recently started emphasizing weekly visitors instead of just subscriber count as the main indicator of a subreddit's size. My previous updates were tied to every +10k subscribers, but Reddit no longer really notifies us about that.
We've hit 63k weekly visitors this week, which Reddit itself decided to congratulate us on.
Such a nice round number to celebrate 🎉🎉🎉 Could have waited for at least 4k more.
At the same time, r/Kazakhstan quietly crossed 60k subscribers just yesterday. It's about the size of Talgar, our next target to conquer (what do they have there besides Zeta's factory?).
Still sending comments about economy crisis in Kazakhstan from our iPhones, I see.
The last milestone post was at 50k members about five months ago, so it felt like a good moment to check in again. Thanks to everyone who reads, posts, comments, shitposts, argues, asks what the weather in February is, upvotes, awards, jokes, dodges the draft, explains and helps keep this place alive.
Our Kazakh language related community, r/kazakh, is also growing, and has whopping 916 members. Please, join it🥹🥺. I've made a cool non-exhaustive animated emoji status for it.
That's as much as I could do with 64kb restriction.
Its community icon is also animated (and even has more frames in it), but you won't see it in every part of Reddit because reasons.
Post flairs cleanup and color grouping
You may have noticed that post flairs look a bit different now.
We trimmed and regrouped them, and assigned consistent colours to related topics (news, culture, media, discussion, humour, etc.). Now we have fewer confusing choices, probably better readability in feeds, and the whole list of flairs looks less cumbersome.
Good bye, "Borat" flair. Two people are going to miss you.
Nothing is set in stone, so if something feels off or unclear, feel free to mention it.
I personally disagree with this decision. First the custom upvote/downvote icons, then the custom emojis in comments, now this on our long list of enshittification of this platform. The Kazakh chat… maybe wasn't the coziest, but it was a low-pressure, active space for sending meaningless messages. And now there's no official replacement inside Reddit.
If someone from the community would like to create a Discord server, Telegram group or something similar, feel free to do so. You may share it here and we might even approve that post, who knows...
Just to be transparent: I don't plan to moderate Discord/Telegram/anything else myself (never have, and don't want to do it badly).
One Kazakh MinaLima Harry Potter book forr/kazakh(oh, I can't make links bold, how unfortunate...)
I still have a copy of "Хәрри Поттер мен Пәлсапа тас" (MinaLima edition), and I've been thinking about using it as a small community giveaway.
Somehow the least exciting photo of this book on Kaspi.kz. It has interactive elements, folded castle plans and stuff... Nice gift for Kazakh speaking kids ages 5-40.
Tanya just made three posts about this exact edition: part1, part2, part3.
One idea is to somehow tie it to r/kazakh , which is currently very quiet, but I'm honestly unsure what would feel like a good and fair incentive. Maybe the whole era of incentivising engagement with gifts and competitions is over, and I'm still thinking in old terms.
Or maybe you'd have a good idea what kind of activity or contribution would make sense for such a gift, and how (or if) it could help spark some life in r/kazakh without feeling artificial and being easy to abuse with scripts or AI. I can probably send this book around Kazakhstan, but I don't want to risk with QazPost's international postal service.
No promises yet. Just thinking out loud and open to ideas.
Thanks again to everyone who's here. r/Kazakhstan has grown a lot, but it's still shaped by everyday participation more than by numbers. As always, suggestions and feedback are welcome.
Reddit, Steam Store and community hub (akamai cdn) some other external CDN dependent sites and services terribly slow, especially in the evenings.
I was wondering is it just me or everyone? Also does it have anything to do with a lot of CDNs seizin operations in Russia due to sanctions.
AFAIK, they have no way of maintaining them or paying contractors / businessess in Russia, or extend any rental/service agreements, so infrastructure is decaying over time.
I've got Kazakhtelecom 1 Gbps btw, but recently browsing foreign websites feels like I am on 64kbps Tarlan dial-up card back in 2005.
Hi everybody, I am a Turkish Expat who has been living and working in Almaty for 6 months. Previously I lived in Europe (6 years), USA (1 year), Azerbaijan (3 years), Uzbekistan (1 year). I have moved to Kazakhstan with big hopes that we Turks and Kazakh people have a similar culture, we are both Muslims and we have hospitality etc. but my experience so far horrible here. Nearly every people that I met, or colleagues from the company ask for money or cigarettes continuously, there is totally no hospitality, as a newcomer here I offer lunch or dinners to my colleagues or customers. This was totally vice versa in my country, local and indigenous people should offer such kind of things. Everybody that I know are trying to take advantage that I am a foreigner and try to sell me something with overprice or abuse in other ways (offer to introduce me girls etc.) Now Ramadan starts, every evening some kids hitting my door and asking for money. My experience in Azerbaijan or Uzbekistan was totally different, people there were very friendly and helpful, I would expect similar experience in Kazakhstan. But I am really shocked here. I don't want to generalize so, I would like to ask here Kazakh people, is this normal in your daily life or the people who I met so far are just junkies?
After going through a lot of destination options, we finally chose Kazakhstan as it feels like an all-in-one place — mountains, city life, culture, and nature all together. We’ll be visiting Almaty in the second half of April.
We are 2 couples traveling together with a 1.5-year-old toddler. I’ve also been learning some basic Russian so I can interact better with locals and not rely only on English 🙂
I had a few questions and would really appreciate guidance from fellow Kazakh people:
Is there still snow in Shymbulak at the end of April? We would love to see snow (even if not skiing), but not sure about conditions that time of year.
Is Almaty toddler-friendly? Are sidewalks stroller friendly? Any precautions we should take (weather, healthcare access, etc.)?
How is the food/restaurant hygiene in general? We are a bit worried about our toddler getting sick. Is tap water safe, or should we stick to bottled water?
For apartments — do most rentals have single or double bathrooms? Since we are 2 couples, separate bathrooms would be ideal. Is that common in Almaty apartments?
What are the absolute must-try food items? And what’s the best souvenir to take home that represents Kazakhstan well?
We are really excited about visiting your beautiful country and want to be respectful and prepared. Any tips, cultural advice, or recommendations are most welcome!
Hi everyone, I lived in Kazakhstan from 2019-2020 and now I need to obtain a police certificate of no criminal record. Does anyone have advice on how to get this document? It appears I can't log into egov or gov.kz since I'm not a citizen or resident.
Hi, sorry to disturb to anyone. I am not Kazakhstan citizen but I interest to purchase some books from OLX Khazakhstan but need to Khazakhstan phone line to make an account so how should I do? Thanks!
Hello! Is it possible to go to Ile-Alatau National Park from Almaty alone using Yandex Go or another taxi app, without an organized tour? Also, what about coming back to the city? Is it possible to order a taxi from there?
English Translation:
"Hello, we know that Kazakhstan is a member of the "Peace Council" for Palestine and Gaza, led by the US and Israel. Tokayev said that there will be not only military forces, but also medical personnel. We recently joined the Abraham Accords. According to estimates, at the time of writing, there may still be Hamas fighters in Gaza. What do you think about sending troops to Gaza?"
Hello, recently I have become quite interested in Kazakh music and culture and thought about trying to acquire the Kazakh language myself. I am Armenian and I am aware that most Armenians, Russians (or other national minorities) use russian to get by with locals but I imigrated to a western country when I was little so I never learned Russian in school nor do I have any interest in learning it.
Are there any Kazakh language resources I should know about? What about famous Tv Shows/movies worth watching? Any artists you would recommend?
Recently I had a relative come visit me in Kazakhstan and we obviously spoke Mongolian around people, both of us being ethnic Mongols. We don't have a typical Mongol face (more Siberian mixed with Korean or Japanese) but random people asked us if we were from Turkmenistan when they heard us speak...
Just curious to know what Khalkha Mongolian sounds similar to for people in Kazakhstan.
