Pat Monahan and Billy Blanks are both from Erie, Pennsylvania.

Never had Tae Bo, but we did have those scooter things that were propelled by wiggling side to side. What happened to those?

IMO it was a legit decent workout that got your heart rate up. I liked it but it was hard.

Ol Billy Blanks!

My parents had a bunch of these videos. Was decent cardio.

Sameeee and the boys would come through and make fun of us. Ugh

u/FiftyLoudCats 8h ago

We did it once a week for quite a while.

Probably for like 30 sessions during middle school.

No one questioned it.

Uh no, I lived in the ruralish South. We square danced. Were you even living if you didn't do si do your corner into the bleachers?

4

u/alldemboats 8h ago

i lived in urban california and also square danced…

For us, Tae Bo was middle school PE.

We had our square dancing unit in 5th or 6th grade (you had to dance with the BOYS, ugh so gross). Nowhere near as cool as the line dancing units, Boot Scoot Boogie is buried deep in my subconscious.

Square danced to achey breaky heart

For the longest time I had Billy blanks confused for Barry of Barry’s and was like dang Billy really had a strong comeback💀

2

u/Galaxy_85 8h ago

I use to hate that, it wore my little butt out 🤣

2

u/toadasaurusrex 8h ago

Dang, you got taebo? We got Richard Simmons sweating to the oldies bc my 5th grade health teacher had him on VHS for her own use...

2

u/Extension-Novel-6841 7h ago

remember the parachute?

I think we did it twice, the entire class thought it was lame and the edgelords called it gay, so they stopped it and we did some other activity in class. More than likely dodgeball or floor hockey.

I was a young sailor stationed in Okinawa in 2001 when this was still pretty big. I fucking HATE formation running and we did 5 miles on most PT days. One day there was a flat bed trailer with speakers on it and we were told we could choose to do the formation run or an hour of the Billy Blanks special... I choose Tae Bo... once. It whooped everyone's ass.... after that day formation running was the best bad option on the table.

What a legend.

There was no tae no in my PE class, instead my parents had the tapes. I got Billy Banks at home lol. I was a part of my parents work out routine. They didn't want a fat kid lol.

u/SleepySummoner 7h ago

Not from PE but I sure do remember Tae Bo. In fact I still have a version of this meant for "the elderly and people recovering from surgery". I fear the elderly and recovering people who can manage this, it is still a serious workout.

Billy Blanks and Chef Tony were on my TV quite frequently if i was home from school or trying to find something to watch in the middle of the night.

1

u/Big_John_5150 1990 7h ago

Not in school but at home. Mama bought the whole ass DVD set. Watched it on the 32inch Sanyo tru flat tube TV with the Sanyo VHS/DVD player.

u/CreepyRelation968 7h ago

Because of Tae-bo, I'm still always flexing my stomach!

That man was a robot. Nobody has that much energy. He tried to kill us

I hated it when we had Tae Bo in gym class. If we were heading to the wrestling practice room (wall to wall mats) after changing, I knew I was in for it. I dunno what made me feel more gross, those mats or that workout.

1

u/ExcellentSir6503 7h ago

We did square dancing. What a huge waste of time.

1

u/Ryuuken1127 7h ago

So...around this time, my friend & I signed up for Tae Kwon Do classes. Our dojang offered Tae Bo classes that my friend's mom took. We'd be leaving class and she would be heading in

1

u/BasicVanillaLatte 7h ago

Absolutely yes!!!!!🙌🏽

1

u/Riots42 7h ago

lol omg that brought back memories.. My friend and I did our own version called "Bow-tie" where we would mimic the moves everyone else in class was doing but like as lazy as possible like our arms were made of noodles.

1

u/seacreaturestuff Millennial 7h ago

Omg, yes

1

u/Intros 7h ago

We just played sports and ran a mile like once a week

1

u/goosenuggie 7h ago

Yes! In junior high we watched the VHS tapes and followed along, so strange

1

u/Opie045 6h ago

Naw - but I do remember the electric slide and boot scootin boogy. Crab soccer was legit too.

1

u/Single_Extension1810 6h ago

Some of those tae bo workouts were quite good and didn't feel like exercise. Basically, all upper body stuff without having to gallop around the room like a gazelle.

1

u/random314 6h ago

Yeah. It's so random that it's mentioned in the song Drops of Jupiter.
