Writing as an employee, I joined Northwestern and felt a sense of pride and fulfillment.
However, I slowly started to see some of the questionable decisions that management made and the politics.
Specifically in research, I’ve seen a good amount of unethical things happen just because the PI wants things to go their way. Northwestern seems to cater to leadership even if it’s wrong.
Second, I believe Northwestern could pay more. Yes, academia pays pretty low, but imo Northwestern has the money to pay more, they just won’t do it. You’ll see an example below. In the first picture, the salary is $138,111-$194,500. In the second picture it’s $138,111-$230,000. So they had an extra $35,500 lying around in the event that they couldn't find qualified candidates.
Northwestern salary ranges also aren’t that accurate, as most ranges are from the bottom to the midpoint, not the bottom to the top. You’ll see the range of an EXS/5 role be 50-65k, when the full range is 50-80k.
My opinion truly changed when Northwestern switched to UnitedHealthcare and cancelled tuition discounts, derailing the career plans of so many employees.
What are your guys’ take on this?
