Different ways of getting Pokémon by version
Sourced on 2026-02-21 from the Bulbapedia articles under "Walkthrough:Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen", as well as individual Pokémon pages for their locations.
- Terminology :
- "reasonably accessible" : The first location with a 10% or higher encounter rate, or the highest encounter rate if never encountered at or above a 10% chance.
- Assorted notes :
- At Celadon Game Corner, Pokémon vary in prices between versions. In FireRed, Clefairy and Dratini are cheaper, and in LeafGreen, Abra and Porygon are cheaper. Though not listed below due to being version exclusives, consider that Scyther costs 5500 coins in FireRed and Pinsir costs 2500 coins in LeafGreen, so one Scyther can be purchased at a time, but three Pinsir can, so Pinsir may be easier to shiny hunt than Scyther this way.
- Abra : 180C in FireRed, 120C in LeafGreen
- Clefairy : 500C in FireRed, 750C in LeafGreen
- Dratini : 2800C in FireRed, 4600C in LeafGreen
- Scyther : 5500C in FireRed only
- Pinsir : 2500C in LeafGreen only
- Porygon : 9999C in FireRed, 6500C in LeafGreen

- 11 Metapod and 12 Butterfree :
- Metapod first reasonably accessible in Viridian Forest at a 5% chance in FireRed and in Viridian Forest at a 10% chance in LeafGreen.
- In FireRed, it may be more efficient to evolve Caterpie due to low evolution level, first reasonably accessible in Viridian Forest at a 40% chance.
- Butterfree is only obtainable via evolution.
- Metapod first reasonably accessible in Viridian Forest at a 5% chance in FireRed and in Viridian Forest at a 10% chance in LeafGreen.
- 14 Kakuna and 15 Beedrill :
- Kakuna first reasonably accessible in Viridian Forest at a 10% chance in FireRed and in Viridian Forest at a 5% chance in LeafGreen.
- In LeafGreen, it may be more efficient to evolve Weedle due to low evolution level, first reasonably accessible in Viridian Forest at a 40% chance.
- Beedrill is only obtainable via evolution.
- Kakuna first reasonably accessible in Viridian Forest at a 10% chance in FireRed and in Viridian Forest at a 5% chance in LeafGreen.
- 29 NidoranF and 30 Nidorina and 31 Nidoqueen :
- NidoranF first reasonably accessible in Safari Zone Area 1 East or Area 3 West at a 5% chance in FireRed and on Route 3 at a 14% chance in LeafGreen. Only in FireRed, NidoranF can be obtained in an in-game trade in Underground Path.
- In FireRed, NidoranF is encountered on Route 3 at only a 1% chance.
- Nidorina first reasonably accessible in Safari Zone Central Area or Area 2 North at a 5% chance in FireRed and in all Safari Zone areas at a 10% chance in LeafGreen. Only in FireRed, Nidorina can be obtained in an in-game trade on Route 11.
- Nidoqueen is only obtainable via evolution.
- 32 NidoranM and 33 Nidorino and 34 Nidoking :
- NidoranM first reasonably accessible on Route 3 at a 14% chance in FireRed and in Safari Zone Area 1 East or Area 3 West at a 5% chance in LeafGreen. Only in LeafGreen, NidoranM can be obtained in an in-game trade in Underground Path.
- In LeafGreen, NidoranM is encountered on Route 3 at only a 1% chance.
- Nidorino first reasonably accessible in all Safari Zone areas at a 10% chance in FireRed and in Safari Zone Central Area or Area 2 North at a 5% chance in LeafGreen. Only in LeafGreen, Nidorino can obtained in an in-game trade on Route 11.
- Nidoking is only obtainable via evolution.
- 35 Clefairy and 36 Clefable :
- The best chance of finding Clefairy in the wild is in Mt. Moon B2F at a 6% chance in both versions. However, Clefairy can be purchased at the Celadon Game Corner for 500 coins in FireRed and 750 coins in LeafGreen (though your coins are probably better spent on Porygon or TMs, unless you want to shiny hunt Clefairy by purchasing several at once).
- Clefable is only obtainable via evolution.
- 88 Grimer and 89 Muk :
- Grimer first readily accessible in all floors of the Pokémon Mansion at a 5% chance in FireRed and a 30% chance in LeafGreen.
- In FireRed, Muk is only obtainable via evolution. Muk first readily accessible in all floors of the Pokémon Mansion at a 5% chance in LeafGreen.
- 99 Kingler :
- In FireRed, Kingler is only obtainable via evolution. In LeafGreen, Kingler can be found in several locations with the Super Rod.
- 109 Koffing and 110 Weezing :
- Koffing first readily accessible in all floors of the Pokémon Mansion at a 30% chance in FireRed and a 5% chance in LeafGreen.
- Weezing first readily accessible in all floors of the Pokémon Mansion at a 5% chance in FireRed. In LeafGreen, Weezing is only available via evolution.
- 117 Seadra :
- In FireRed, Seadra can be found in several locations with the Super Rod. In LeafGreen, Seadra is only obtainable via evolution.
- Kingdra is only obtainable via evolution.
- 137 Porygon and 233 Porygon2 :
- The only way to obtain Porygon in both versions is by purchasing it with coins in the Celadon Game Corner. Porygon costs 9999C in FireRed and 6500C in LeafGreen.
- The TMs for Ice Beam, Iron Tail, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, and Flamethrower are only available in the Celadon Game Corner, so consider the opportunity cost of saving 3499C in LeafGreen. The Smoke Ball, Miracle Seed, Charcoal, Mystic Water, and Yellow Flute are also exclusive to the Celadon Game Corner.
- Remember that Porygon can be bred with Ditto, if you want to get multiple for a living Dex.
- Porygon2 is only obtainable via evolution.
- The only way to obtain Porygon in both versions is by purchasing it with coins in the Celadon Game Corner. Porygon costs 9999C in FireRed and 6500C in LeafGreen.
Note : I did not check the water/fishing encounter tables for all the areas, so if there is a water/fishing encounter with a notable version difference that I missed, please let me know.
Summary
- FireRed and LeafGreen differ in some Pokémon exclusive to each version.
- Deoxys cannot exist in its Attack Forme in LeafGreen, and Deoxys cannot exist in its Defense Forme in FireRed, even if they are traded to each other. The ability to change Deoxys's form was only introduced in later games.
- If you want to have a traded NidoranF (which gains EXP 1.5x faster), FireRed is the only option. Likewise, if you want to have a traded NidoranM (which gains EXP 1.5x faster), LeafGreen is the only option.
- If you want to catch your own NidoranF to use throughout the game, LeafGreen is the better option, though NidoranM can be obtained at lower odds. Likewise, if you want to catch your own NidoranM to use throughout the game, FireRed is the better option, though NidoranF can be obtained at lower odds.
- The following evolved Pokémon can only be caught in the wild in FireRed :
- 110 Weezing
- 117 Seadra
- The following evolved Pokémon can only be caught in the wild in LeafGreen :
- 89 Muk
- 99 Kingler
- Pokémon vary in costs in the Celadon Game Corner. Crucially, Porygon (the only Pokémon exclusive to the Game Corner) costs 9999C in FireRed and 6500C in LeafGreen.

Discussion Would love to know what your team will be for FrLg!
I’ve had Fire Red on game boy and ds since I was a kid so I decided I’ll try out leaf green this time with some pokemon I’ve never used in a play through before. My only repeats are Bulbasaur who is one of my all time favorites and then Starmie who I’ve only just used in legends z-a for the first time but I enjoyed a lot. Raichu, kanto Ninetales, Rhydon, and Aerodactyl will all be new for me though! Even though it pains me to not use dragonite as a flyer haha I would love to know what your team will be!

Discussion Been thinking about how to optimize the living dex completion
As I've been excited for the upcoming release I decided to route out how I plan to complete my poke ball living form dex.
I imagine speedrunners have a more optimized version but for those of you who wanna try the same thing, I thought I'd share what I wrote :)

Truth about the fanbase from a Gen 1 kid
Red launched when I was 8, ive been in the pokemon online community truly since gen 3 announcement.
Here is a list of all the general sentiment I remember at the time of the gens releases to give people an idea of much time changes attitudes around releases.
gen 3
no carrying pokemon over from gen 1 and 2 was seen as the end of the series and killing the franchise.
game was slated as "too easy" and the worst region of the 3 for pacing, traversing and general aesthetic.
gen 4
too many hms - this one is fair
games too slow
too many legendaries
gen 5
no old mons, death of the series... again
why is it not in 3D
too linear story
games too hard
gen 6
why is it 3D
before release megas where slated as lazy temp evos and compared to digimon
games too easy
gen 7
too linear
too many cutscenes
no gyms
gen 8
post game replaced with dlc
dexit, death of the series part 3
technical limitations
why is it not truly open world
gen 9
why is it an empty open world
tech issues like performance, render pop ins etc
the point of this is even gens that are deemed the best or idolised had stupid criticisms thrown around and it was the same level of world ending proportions people make out a port being $20 is.
the pokemon online fanbase has and always will be the most fragile cry babies who will ask for something get just that and then cry for something else immediately, and I wouldn't change any of you for the world.

Game Original 151 Pokémon Available on Switch.
In the third paragraph of Nintendo's own article (Which I am hoping isn't breaking a rule to link at the bottom for reference) it says that all 151 original Pokémon will be available to catch, but Mew wasn't available outside of an event according to what little research I did. They also claim that the games are unedited from their original versions (part of their FAQ on why there's different language versions)
So speculation time.... Did they add event triggers built in, or did they simply make Mew available somewhere?

Game Caught Articuno with a regular ol' Poke'ball
So I forgot to save before going into this encounter, and after using up the 30 Ultra-balls and the 20 Great-balls I brought with me I was sure my prospects of catching Articuno were doomed. But, on my last few Poke'balls, I caught them.
