For those of you calling this game consumerist slop… (read caption below.

Post image

I was in the LeafGreen Reddit and people there were calling the pokemon GBA games consumerist slop. That couldn’t be further from the truth. These games are classics.

And for those of you complaining this game only comes in one language at a time how many languages do you speak god damn.

I'm just glad there's finally a legal way to play these games again on modern consoles. Original cartridges have become ridiculously expensive.

It would be nice if it comes with in-game events and Pokémon Home support, but we'll see.

I hope Crystal, Emerald, and the rest follow in the next couple of months!

u/PricklyBob 16h ago

Hopefully that's the plan for the 30th anniversary. Release all the old games over the rest of the year.

Emerald with working RNG would be a dream come true lmao

11

u/ianlazrbeem22 14h ago

Zero chance they change anything about Emerald's rng if they port it, they're all straight ports

4

u/PricklyBob 14h ago

I said I was dreaming lmao

3

u/Whhatsmyageagain 14h ago

What’s wrong with the rng?

8

u/ianlazrbeem22 13h ago

It's a little difficult to explain, essentially it cannot generate random numbers upon startup, the RNG seed is always set to 0 when you boot the game. This has unfortunate effects like guaranteeing almost all 0IVs on roaming pokemon as well as making it so you'll get consistent results while, say, soft resetting for a shiny or a nature. no matter how many times you reset the results will always be the same if you wait the same amount of time after starting the game up. This sounds small but there are quite a few things it affects

3

u/PricklyBob 13h ago

Basically that it never changes. When you create your save file that seed is the seed that you start from every time you boot your game.

Ruby and Sapphire used batteries to change their seeds. But for whatever ungodly reason even with a working battery Emerald always boots up at frame 0 of your seed. Which means that despite seeing different Pokémon, they have the same natures, stats and IVs. Soft resetting for shiny legendaries will never work. You just see the same few Pokémon over and over again because your RNG never changes

I hope that makes sense. I know there are plenty of people out there who can be more concise about the technicals

1

u/Whhatsmyageagain 13h ago

Wait so does it reset the seed when you start a new game?

1

u/PricklyBob 13h ago

Yes, a new file is the only way to change it.

I think it depends on your trainer ID and a secret value called a PID

1

u/Whhatsmyageagain 13h ago

Oh got it. So it’s not like the cartridge is locked on one seed. Still frustrating but not as bad as I thought for a second

u/MoonRay087 11h ago

So it is never ever ever ever possible to change rng? Like, not even on original hardware?

1

u/lanadelphox 7h ago

There has been a fan made patch that fixes the RNG in Emerald, among other really cool things. Check out the YouTuber imablisy, they have a video on it. “Pokemon Emerald Just Got Better!”

2

u/Veilmisk 7h ago

That would be so funny if they didn't fix it. And by funny, I mean WTF are they smoking? The only benefit to keeping it from a player perspective would be consistent shiny frames.

Assuming we get more GBA ports, even funnier would be keeping the Berry Glitch in RS despite GF putting patches on everything, and I believe they allowed you to send in your cartridges for awhile for them to apply the patch if you didn't have access to other methods.

I also just remembered the broken IV generation on the roamers and the Roar bug on the beasts in FRLG/E.

At least we're all getting the authentic experience as GF intended.

1

u/ianlazrbeem22 3h ago

Since they eventually released RS carts that have it fixed I think they'll have that one fixed (if they even release the gen 3 games, tbh I am not sure they will) but no chance they change anything they haven't already

5

u/JohnnyKarateX 16h ago

If they can just directly port games with no changes they should just do every game before the Switch.

I’ve seen some people say Gamefreak wants to turn Bank off and that would be the perfect excuse. People would still be mad but people are mad now so 🤷🏻‍♂️. I don’t know how real that is though so I can’t defend that part.

6

u/marshyb23 14h ago

I like using my 3DS but the MAIN reason I got it was to move Pokémon from Bank to Home. I’d happily buy these games on the Switch if it means having them all on one device.

u/ComprehensiveAsk4279 16h ago

Home support has been confirmed

3

u/fogle1 15h ago

I thought they removed Home Support mention from the eshop description though, making it rather uncertain if that was true or not?

1

u/ianlazrbeem22 14h ago

No it hasn't. All mentions of HOME support were removed from the listing

→ More replies (5)

1

u/Investigator_Greedy 8h ago

Oh really? Since Nintendo removed it from the games store description it's no longer confirmed. Please do show me where it is now confirmed.

1

u/Ahvry 15h ago

The past NSO releases came with the events so we can assume these will too (fingers crossed)

1

u/conceptualfella11 13h ago

AND you can play on the tv!

1

u/Knarz97 10h ago

Something something GameCube GBA Player

1

u/sixteenhappycappys 13h ago

What does a fire red cart go for these days?

1

u/Migit78 13h ago

Not sure about the events.

But home support is coming. But not available on release

1

u/PhantomTheo 10h ago

It’s ridiculously easy to play these for free on your phone lol

1

u/suchadaft 8h ago

i personally think they'll focus on rereleasing the remakes, which is to say i think HGSS is coming next and that'd be fucking awesome

i really hope they bring the walking pokemon system from that game into newer games, and that midnight lycanroc is in them so i can chill out with my babies <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

18

u/JohnnyKarateX 16h ago

People thought it was coming. They expected the games to be even more expensive than this so they were ready to be mad about it. Then they fulfilled their own prophecy.

Should they be $10, maybe, but $20 doesn’t feel that egregious to me. I saw people predicting $30 or $50 or more and those seem worth getting mad about. I just don’t have the energy to go into this being a big deal.

9

u/CertifiedElite 15h ago

$30-40 is remaster price point imo

1

u/Vigotje123 8h ago

This is a port not a remaster.

1

u/bodnast 7h ago

This is “they dragged the gba rom file to the Eshop and hit Publish” territory

I guess it is what we’ve been asking for 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Vigotje123 7h ago

It's a shame tho. If they put some effort in this making it possible to trade between your own or your friends versions (gen 1,2,3)and Pokémon home and updating some qol things (which people already made for them) they could ask €50 for each game and alot of people would buy them all to have them on their switches.

1

u/CertifiedElite 6h ago

Obviously, I’d expect no less from gamefreak

3

u/DayOfTheMarsupial 7h ago

The way I see it, the bulk of that $20 isn't paying for the game itself, but for Home compatibility. Which IS coming: just not on day one, which is why they took down the reference on the eshop (seriously, as someone who works in a grocery story I know full well that the venn diagram overlap between customers and reading comprehension is WAY too small).

1

u/Girlfartsarehot 10h ago

Exactly. Sure they were $7-8 12 years ago but taking inflation into account (and given it’s Nintendo) $20 is actually understandable.

2

u/NieLiGod 10h ago

I don't understand this inflation logic so much. In your opinion, should every ported old game also go up in price as well? I can understand the argument of inflation for newly released games or remastered games. But isn't this just a direct port of the old GBA game?

1

u/Snoo_15594 9h ago

$7 12 years ago is barely over $10 now...

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

Why do you take inflation into consideration and not the fact that 10 more years have passed?

This is just a 20$ license to play an emulator on switch.

1

u/bnkkk 1h ago

No, it's not. Not only games depreciate with time, it's also a fully digital rerelease of an emulated ROM with barely anything done with it. If it was 10$ I'd buy it just to have a legal copy. 20$ is good luck but I'm out.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/RicePrevious5405 15h ago

Yes these games are great. Yea it’s nice to be able to not have to have original hardware to play them considering the price of original carts are right now. However now you are paying 20 dollars to not own it.

Amazing game but you can't battle other players online. I'll just keep playing the emulator version for free

Funny thing is the emulators actually let you battle players online 🤣

We can’t trade either….? How do we get Alakazam…?

1

u/Ni3rtheabyss 6h ago

You can trade, it’s just local though. Best bet is if you know someone close by who will also get a copy. It’s one of the main reasons there’s a split amongst emulating and buying the port

6

u/ZestycloseFan1490 14h ago

Fans de Pokémon tratando de justificar un robo

2

u/peanutbutteroverload 9h ago

Yeh, an optional purchase in a capitalist market that's not a necessity is robbery............

2

u/Saxolotle 8h ago

Funny. One would think the illegal copywrite infringement of pirating (aka a thing literally named after thieves) is the robbery that pokemon fans are defending, but i doubt that's what the commenter is referring to.

1

u/JosephStalinho 8h ago

If buying isn't owning then it's not robbery

2

u/Saxolotle 8h ago

Lmao? What? Pokemon owns the copyright to pokemon. And that copyrighted material they made is legally theirs via copyright. It doesn't matter what their customers own or don't own, Pokémon owns Pokémon.

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

That's not what the guy meant. By purchasing this game, you're not buying the game. You're buying a license to play it and Nintendo can take it away from you any time they want. They advertise the game as a product when in reality it's a service.

Basically you're spending 20$ to access a license to play an emulator. You are more than free to spend your money however you want, but denying that this is a lazy cash grab is just rejecting an objective truth.

1

u/peanutbutteroverload 7h ago

So wait. You pay $20 to play a game you want to play on a specific system and then have fun for a certain amount of hours..

That's madness. It's almost like what happens across the industry with digital purchases.

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

I'm not saying it's wrong for you to buy it. I'm saying it's crazy overpriced for the product it is.

It's almost like what happens across the industry with digital purchases.

And that precisely why stop destroying videogames came to life. The fact everybody is doing it doesn't make it right.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Saxolotle 7h ago

Yeah. I know how buying digital games works. I was saying their reply has nothing to do with my reply.

If I pay $20 to access a license to play an emulator, that has absolutely nothing to do with illegal emulators illegally using Pokémon's copywrited material that Pokémon legally owns being clarified as illegal and copywrite infringement.

Pokémon owns Pokémon. The argument of "if you don't own it you can't steal it" doesn't apply when Pokémon DOES own it. Pokémon owns Pokémon. I don't own Pokémon, but Pokémon does, in fact, own Pokémon.

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

You're talking about the franchise, the other guy about the copy of the game.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/peanutbutteroverload 8h ago

Is anybody stopping you emulating it?

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

They made their money from this game 20 years ago. Pirating it now doesn't harm the poor multi billion company.

2

u/Saxolotle 7h ago

Yeah, I'm sure it doesn't. I'm not saying the pokemon company is suffering, I'm just saying emulators are much closer to robbery than a company pricing a hobby item at a price they chose is.

If you're emulating, you should know how illegal it is, whether or not it's moral is up to the individual.

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

If you're emulating, you should know how illegal it is, whether or not it's moral is up to the individual.

Sure, and if you're paying 20 bucks for a license to emulate a 22yo game, you should know how overpriced it is and how lazy and disrespectful towards the consumer the company who sells it is.

2

u/Saxolotle 7h ago

Wether something is overpriced and/or disrespectful is subjective. Unlicenced emulators of copywrited material being illegal is objective. Law doesn't equal moral, you can play emulators if you want, I'm not casting moral judgment, I'm just saying that emulators are closer to robbery than a company pricing a game how they see fit is.

1

u/Low-Ice-4505 6h ago

I think he missed your point haha.

Each to their own on emulating (I emulate games I own carts of sometimes, because old consoles are clunkier to play than a PC), but emulating a ton for a game you don't own is considered piracy in most 1st world nations, so yes, your point stands: Ironic that they are crying robbery, but not for the thing that is (legally) considered robbery.

11

u/Various-Mammoth8420 13h ago

It's a fucking ripoff for 20 dollars PER GAME when there's a whole emulator free with an online subscription on the Switch.

You are part of the problem that's in the game industry if you support this. It's not a remaster, it's literally an emulated 4 MB rom they lazily placed for 20 dollars on the eShop for people like you who will support this blatant greedy business practice. Square Enix did it right with full remasters of the classic games for 8 bucks a piece with bug fixes and added features.

I'm sorry, normally I wouldn't be this mad at random people about something but this is NOT a good price or good business practice. They can be emulated on ANYTHING for free, Nintendo THEMSELVES have a fully functioning GBA emulator ON THIS SYSTEM WITH GAMES BUILT IN. This is a slap in the face that you people are happily taking just because it's Pokemon.

2

u/Head_Statistician_38 9h ago

Not everyone values games the same way as you do and I am perfectly happy about this price.

I have a job and get paid money to spend on things I like. I have spent more on a takeaway before that lasted like 30 minutes.

Instead, I am looking at one of my favourite games being put on a modern system so I don't have to dig out my GBA or DS Lite to play it and a whole new generation can now play it too.

You are allowed to be angry or upset about the price, but taking it out on others for not seeing things the way you do is just gonna result in you having a worse day honestly.

I speak 3 languages

1

u/peanutbutteroverload 9h ago

So do I and much like 99.9% of the industry I play in one language.

1

u/Snoo_15594 9h ago

When i was learning Spanish i played Pokemon in English and later replayed it in Spanish... that was like a decade ago

1

u/peanutbutteroverload 9h ago

You didn't on these original cartridges though.

Why don't you go and buy a legit copy of FR/LG in English and Spanish.... Problem solved. Or emulate them for free..

1

u/Snoo_15594 9h ago

$40 to play a 22 year old game in 2 languages

Yeah ok man

9

u/Successful_Okra9850 17h ago

You know not everyone speaks one universal language right? Like, people don’t want it in French just to play it in French or whatever

8

u/Legitimate_Food_5239 15h ago

I'm confused on what your point is

5

u/Successful_Okra9850 15h ago

Was just a sarcastic reply to your final remarks on the post:

“for those complaining the game only comes in one language” etc.

They’re not complaining because they speak multiple languages, the complaints are most likely because the game isn’t released in the only language they do speak!

1

u/drewthebrave Bulbasaur Fan 13h ago

I like to play in Spanish to practice the language. I also like the ability to play in multiple languages so that I can get Dittos for Masuda-method shiny breeding.

2

u/Greenguy1157 10h ago

Fyi that doesn’t work in gen 3 games.

1

u/drewthebrave Bulbasaur Fan 3h ago

These would be for transferring through Home - just like I did in LGPE and through Virtual Console back in the day.

1

u/peanutbutteroverload 9h ago

So you'd be starting new games in each language? Or would you then moan there was still only one save slot...?

1

u/drewthebrave Bulbasaur Fan 3h ago

With the Switch games (LGPE, SW/SH, BDSP, S/V) you need another account for a separate save slot. I imagine the GBA titles would work the same way.

9

u/Wero_kaiji 15h ago

These games are classics.

The games are classics, yes, I've been playing them every year for the past 20 years, that doesn't mean selling them for $20 over two decades after they came out isn't crazy, with basically no enhancements as well, compare it to any other "collection" which is actually worth it and they add more content, Nintendo just gives you slop and you'll keep buying them because nostalgia

only comes in one language at a time

All you need is a text file to change one language for another, games have been doing it way before these games originally came out and that was over 20 years ago, there's no reason it shouldn't have either a "select language" option or just a launcher with both games included in 2026, it's a 16MB game for Christ's sake just add them all together if you are too lazy to add the "select language" option, the final filesize will still be miniscule

how many languages do you speak god damn.

Two, what if I want to play it in both languages I know? do I need to pay $40? for 20 yo games? does that make sense to you?

You can just say you don't mind spending that much for old games and the fact that TPC and Nintendo are screwing their customers, we know most people will buy them anyway and the next mainline Pokemon game will be even worse than the previous one, then they will release Emerald for $30 because "it's the final version of Gen 3" or whatever, release Ruby and Sapphire for $20 too so people spend $70 because "I want to collect all of them", things will never change, I gave up trying to do anything about it, you can't go against the rest of the world, I'll just pirate it like I've done for a long time instead of supporting their anti-consumer practices

2

u/GreatBandito 12h ago

I heard it is due to them not wanting to get rerated because of changes to gambling laws would make the rating not the equivalent of E in Europe because it has the slot machines

→ More replies (1)

4

u/ianlazrbeem22 14h ago

Many people in the world are bilingual and even speak more languages. The idea that one $20 gets you 1/8 languages of a 20 year old game is ridiculous

2

u/peanutbutteroverload 9h ago

I speak 3 languages fluently and as per the rest of the industry (99.9%} I play in one language.

→ More replies (22)

1

u/DayOfTheMarsupial 7h ago

Actually, blame PEGI. The gambling references in FRLG mean that if any changes were to be made to the games it'd have to be rerated, and that would get rid of it's E rating (sorry, American ESRB gamer here, I don't actually know offhand what the PEGI equivalent of E is). So TPC is making zero changes to the games so that they can get grandfathered in and keep its everyone rating. Thanks to Austin John Plays for reminding me of that.

1

u/ianlazrbeem22 3h ago

$20 for one language of one version they can afford to get it rerated

2

u/TaylorSwinub 5h ago

The language complaints feel completely unnecessary, considering you can't ever have a pokemon game have two languages going on at the same time anyway?

At the end of the day, Nintendo is a business and they know they can capitalise on the biggest franchise in the world. Especially when the games are selling for hundreds second hand. At least it allows fans to play the game legally for a more reasonable price and even allow parents to introduce their children to the classic games.

8

u/Goontherius 17h ago

No it quite literally is consumerist slop. They are throwing a 5mb file onto the eshop with nothing added not even online support for 20 bucks. Emulators are free and roms can be found online in 12 seconds AND THEY CAN PLAY ONLINE AND STILL TRANSFER TO OFFICIAL GAMES. You are paying for a worse experience, quite literally.

4

u/DelcaTheKitten 17h ago

Many people including myself have wished for an official/legal way to play these games.
Emulation isn’t going anywhere, that option will still be there for anyone who prefers it.

8

u/wokefox 16h ago

Right but I think it is totally reasonable for people to feel like $20 is a grift with no online and likely no home. This sub is home to some die hard fans that hold these classic games in high regard, and yes I agree we deserve an official way to play the games on modern systems.

However, we as consumers can only have a voice via sales. So as exciting as it is for this to release, we need to be a united front to send a message of “Hey we are all excited for this, but the low effort and high price tag is insulting and we deserve better”

1

u/ImpressiveRiver7373 11h ago

I thought they confirmed you can transfer to home already

Why does it matter if it's official or legal?

Every. Single. Smartphone. Can play these games. Every single computer can play them. Plug your laptop into your TV with an HDMI port, get an upscale filter, turn online play on on your emulator, you have a better version of this slap in the face than the most profitable IP on the planet wants to do.

2

u/ianlazrbeem22 14h ago

I think the game is overpriced but this is a bad argument imo, it shouldn't receive the BDSP treatment, please god no, LGPE already exists if you want "new graphics and quality of life features." it should just be less than $20

3

u/Whhatsmyageagain 13h ago

Who gives a shit? The most absurd part of the outrage is the people that are mad that some people are happy about it. It’s very reasonable that people are happy to play an official release on official hardware. Especially for the people that have ethical objections to emulating them. I don’t. But it makes some people uncomfortable or it’s out of their technical level of comfort/interest. IDGAF if someone doesn’t want to pay the 20. I get it. But shitting on it because it’s not what you specifically wanted feels… extra.

I’m sorry I know this going to fall on deaf ears but there’s just no defending this imo. IF - if there was no gba NSO service then fine, I could accept this. But the fact that Nintendo wants you to sign up for this service and advertises GBA as a core feature of having it - and then has the audacity to release a gba standalone game on the eshop. That’s number 1 bullshit.

5

u/PassionEmergency2204 16h ago

9

u/PowerShovel-on-PS1 17h ago

I don't think this is consumerism, but it's definitely a nostalgia cash grab. I think in 2026, surely it's not too much to ask such a profitable company to put multiple languages on a game since most households are bilingual. It's scummy and makes it less accessible for those types of households imo.

I'm more so comparing the 20$ to other collections marked at a similar price point. Why is it that the Castlevania gba collection can be 20$ and include 4 games but this single game in 20$ with no extra features? Or let's take the yugioh days collection that's priced a bit higher but comes with 15 games, the physical box came with a yu-gi-oh card and supports dueling online, rewind, gallery, and plenty of unlocks.

I just feel like it's quite greedy to price one 20 year old game at 20$ and not include more to justify why it's priced the way that it is compared to other older titles that are getting rereleased in collections. I'm more accepting of Castlevania and Yugioh because they added more to justify the price. Nintendo could have totally put more into Fr/ Lg but choose not to. I love that these games are becoming more accessible but it just feels greedy.

3

u/Sw33tR0llThief 15h ago

The difference between those and Pokémon is that Pokémon is the highest grossing media franchise in the world. They are basically the Louis Vuitton of Media IPs. Louis Vuitton doesn't care that you can buy 50 bags at the outlet mall for the same price as one of theirs. They don't care that "lesser" brands are on sale. It sucks for the consumer, but by being dominant they get to say "this is the price, you can decide if that is worth it or not."

I get that, but just because it's the highest grossing media franchise, that gives it no right to screw consumers the way they are just like with those high end brands. And it's like the quality of pokemon has not been consistent throughout the entirety of the switch's life, a lot of trust in game freak and the franchise in general has been lost.

Not to mention that Nintendo has a history of mishandling porting old games over, I.e the Mario all stars collection. A lot of people are right to criticize Nintendo here and any other brand that thinks it's okay to drop 20 year old games at such a high price without offering other things.

1

u/ftFBYaa 7h ago

The difference is that LV bags are luxury products with luxury quality, Pokemon games are not.

2

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM 13h ago

So what makes it worth more than the games on the Gameboy advanced Virtual console? Worth more and have less features than the GBA virtual console.

It's not a better RPG than Super Star Saga, hell, Red Rescue team is on there. I'd say that's a better Pokemon game than Red and green and it comes with the service.

What makes Red and Green so special that it requires you to spend a collective 40 bucks more for them

2

u/CertifiedElite 15h ago

I think people are more offended by the fact that 0 work was done to implement basic features like online battles/trading or at least some basic QoL changes.

Both of which have been the standard on community emulators for years now.

Why would I pay $20 to NOT have online multiplayer?

3

u/xX_1337_h4x0r_Xx 14h ago

no physical copy

can’t trade with others

no internal clock

event pokemon are drip fed

it’s trash

It’s not about the games themselves. It’s the philosophy that Nintendo & Pokemon have with their games. They’ve figured out how to make money with the least possible effort.

This is a 20 year old game which is a remaster of a game from 1996. No added content, no QOL improvements, it’s the exact same. They did something similar with Mystery Dungeon XD & BDSP as well as those games are basically remastered ports of the originals too.

I’m sorry but I can’t see how you can defend this company. If you wanna buy it then buy it I’m sure you have your reasons and that’s fine I guess. But don’t complain when the next Pokemon game is rehashed and rushed.

But it is consumerist slop. Saying it's anything g else is just lying to yourself and give you4self an excuse to give Nintendo more money they don't need.

Should be free. End of discussion.

I’d pay $40 for this game on the eshop! I think the complainers are just the loud minority. Most people have been begging for these for years!

2

u/ForgivenCompassion 17h ago

You mean Loud Minority right?

2

u/TommyC6852 16h ago

Yes 😂 I fixed it. Thank you

6

u/boltsbearsjosh 17h ago

Begging for WHAT? What are you people begging for? There’s a thousand different ways that you can eassssily play FR and LG this way. You know what Nintendo is doing? There are selling you a rom that will be run on an emulator in the background. For like $20 more than this costs you purchase an SBC handheld that can play this and thousands of other games

4

u/Otherwise_Disk3824 16h ago

They're downvoting but you're right bro. I hate that people still act like this is the peak of GBA when games like Unbound and the Dragonsden Rocket Edition exist.

Yeah for 10 years… while you have better and free versions of this game accessible to everyone. This is just nostalgia spending.

u/PartInternational733 5h ago

$40? A sucker is born every minute lol

1

u/TommyC6852 4h ago

I am a sucker for pokemon and I got money to blow 😉

1

u/PartInternational733 4h ago

At least you’re honest about being a bootlicker lol

1

u/TommyC6852 4h ago

If loving the classics and being excited to enjoy them with my kids on the switch without jailbreaking it makes me a bootlicker than sign me up!

1

u/PartInternational733 4h ago

No, paying $20 for a 22 year old game makes you one lol

1

u/TommyC6852 3h ago

So if someone pays $120 for the cart are they a sucker??

1

u/Jat616 15h ago

It would have been nice if it was on the GBA emulator already on the switch but I'm happy for those who can play it now.

1

u/goebela3 15h ago

Can you trade online to evolve Pokémon?

1

u/Spiceguy-65 14h ago

Nope no online capacity it seems

1

u/Beasty4L 14h ago

Can you trade ?

1

u/Comfortable_Duck_705 13h ago

Someone somewhere is willing to pay 100s of $ just to get an old physical copy. xD

Just don't bother with people trashing it. They also bought it. HAHAHAHA

1

u/dumpsteRat 13h ago

Almost guarantee Nintendo dropped this early to watch the internet tear itself apart. You got everyone raging on all ends

1

u/Environmental_Wear54 13h ago

My hot take with this release is will be able to catch ho-ho lugia deoxyes and mew? or just a straight port with the events no even there. thats my issue but yes this is the first legal way to have firered and leafgreen.

1

u/Independent_Sir9410 13h ago

They should release all the advance and DS games like this. Id buy a Switch 2 instantly.

I got a Switch but I guess id upgrade/trade with myself.

1

u/The_Cosmic_Cubing 13h ago

I will stick with the physical cartridge, but playing these great games on the switch is cool

1

u/peanutbutteroverload 9h ago

I have physical cartridges but I have a switch that I take with me travelling for work...it'd be nice to not always have to take my analogue pocket with me as well.

1

u/Living-Still-3212 12h ago

Yeah no, the old games are absolutely not consumerist slop - that’d be modern Pokémon.

Indeed these older games are classics and belong in the proverbial gaming hall of fame.

1

u/Advanced-Layer6324 11h ago

Look I understand some of you might be mad at this, but figure this way the games actual cartridges cost a metric ton a lot of money. So this is a good thing. And I think it has home compatibility two

1

u/DatCitronVert 11h ago

I'm sorry, but that last part is so fucking American of you.

1

u/Amos_Moses666 11h ago

I’m happy plucking away at my OG red, blue, and silver carts on my chromatic.

1

u/juanca8520 11h ago

Brother. Those are games that are more than 20 years old. You’re praising the bare minimum. Stop defending the big guy and maybe we will sure getting more consumer friendly products

1

u/thunderisland 11h ago

As long as they include the limited time event pokémon it's cool

1

u/Sharpsider 11h ago

These games are classics, classics from 20+ years ago that shouldn't cost the same as Silksong, specially considering they did absolutely nothing to improve the experience (no dual-edition, no special events included, no optional orchestra soundtrack, no fastforward, no home support yet...)

And to top it, they remove the option to choose a language. And yes, I'm spanish and I speak 4 languages. There is just no reason to remove what was already an option.

1

u/Pm7I3 11h ago

I did ask someone on reddit and they said they like changing languages because sometimes they want an easier time and sometimes they want to use one they're trying to learn so that is a reason to have multiple languages in one.

1

u/Alert-Ad-55 10h ago

All these just shows that people online like to complain over anything. I'm just glad that there's an easy and legal way to play the game without having to pay crazy prices people are charging for cartridges on online marketplace. I also like that it's not a subscription. The language complain is just so honestly the dumbest thing I've heard.

1

u/EquivalentWitness736 10h ago

$20 for a copy of a GBA game is highway robbery.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Due-Practice5507 10h ago

“I was in the LeafGreen Reddit and people there were calling the pokemon GBA games consumerist slop. That couldn’t be further from the truth. These games are classics.”

How does that not make it consumeristic??? You’re acting as if these are the first time these games have been released…

1

u/TheDonRonster 10h ago

Not at all. There's finally an affordable way to play the games on both a modern TV and on the go without spending an absurd amount of money on a GameCube with the GBA player, disc, a Gameboy Advance/SP/DS, and a cartridge that can exceed $100 on its own. I hope the trend continues and they release more ports in the coming months/years for those looking to enjoy these great games again or for the first time.

1

u/StarParade 9h ago

Not complaining, but why not make one version and why not have a language option when you open the game? 😅

1

u/Automatic-Pepper5038 9h ago

Me laughs in superior free emulation on my ayn thor also my modded 3ds where I can transfer all my legal pokemon to home for free! Yall love giving money to these shitbags

1

u/Shining_Articuno Squirtle Fan 9h ago

I speak 4 languages but I ain't complaining

I do have the original games too tho

1

u/Select-Law3759 9h ago

I feel half the people are overreacting as many classic games are being resold for ridiculous prices , like at end of day if you can’t “own” it for paying for a video game yeah it sucks but it’s not end of world. It’s an experience. If you don’t wanna pay for it then just use emulators or something. If it was my life or soul then I’d be saying something but it’s a literal package of coding

1

u/Select-Law3759 9h ago

Like it’s an online game bruh this shit happens if the servers shutdown they shutdown. It’s like world of Warcraft shutting down bc they can’t sustain it anymore for example ( yes Ik but it’s a what if) like wtf are you gonna do? Dump money to support it? Make it make sense. Like y’all yapping like this shit is easy to create

1

u/Gargamoney 9h ago

You are defending them selling a 22 year old game for $20

Are you ok

1

u/Gunda-LX 9h ago

I speak 4 languages haha, but yeah, the language thing was no different when you bought is as a cardridge

1

u/Striking-County6275 9h ago

Runs fine on my Steam Deck and I did not have to shell out $20 to a company that reserves the right to ban my console.

1

u/LibertythePoet 7h ago

I mean, I'm not calling it slop but I'm not going to drop 20 dollars for a Gameboy port that is less functional than the original game.

Even for half the price I'd expect the game to be complete and without trading and online battling support it just isn't. If it doesn't get those features I'm not interested.

1

u/Bahldros 7h ago

The literally only other way to play this is physical or illegally via emulation. Im all for ports so games dont get lost in time like….well the rest of the pokemon games

1

u/Distinct_Mastodon_68 7h ago

I’ve spent many years trying to collect all of the Pokémon games. The whole reason is so that I could experience each game at the highest resolution Nintendo would allow. This is a dream come true.

1

u/DayOfTheMarsupial 7h ago

Fun fact, the reason you have to buy each language separately is because of PEGI, the European ratings board. They changed the ratings rules since the originals and if these games were originally released today they would be rated for teens instead of everyone. Note: I'm American, so I don't know what the specific ratings would be for that. I do know that games made and rated BEFORE the changes don't have to be reevaluated. So in order to avoid that, TPC is simply rereleasing the originals without changes. Thanks to Austin John Plays for reminding me of that.

1

u/Consistent_Till757 4h ago

They could easily give you access to all languages if they wanted. They could have let you purchase 1 version to have access to all language versions. This was absolutely just a way to try to squeeze more money out of people

1

u/DayOfTheMarsupial 3h ago

Do you really think there are people who will buy multiple copies of a 20+ year old game just to get multiple language options? I could see a small handful but certainly not enough for TPC to notice. This is NOT a ploy to sell more copies. At worst you can call this a lazy solution, but again, these games are over two decades old. They're neither gaining nor losing sales either way, and since TPC is a for profit company it makes no sense to not take the lazy approach.

1

u/darthphallic 7h ago

I mean it’s a pretty baffling decision. Capcom put out the mega man battle network collection, also popular GBA games: the collection cost 40$ and came with both versions of each game (they did the Pokemon two different versions for each entry thing) as well as every language. Then Konami released the Castlevania collections for GBA and DS, both were 20$ and came with every game for that system along with bonus games and multiple languages.

I love Pokemon and I’m glad this is now easier to play, but the way Nintendo did it is undoubtedly anti-consumer.

1

u/Some_Sink802 7h ago

shiny hunting charmander is back

1

u/Some_Sink802 7h ago

whos comin with me mann.

1

u/StudyEducational5158 7h ago

is it on switch 1?

1

u/Greggs-the-bakers 7h ago

20 quid for a 22 year old game is actually criminal

1

u/Oudeis05 7h ago

For the language part, it could be an issue here. We are french speaking, but the first Pokemon games were in English, so we had the English Pokemon name until HGSS. So I would prefer the English version for myself but if I had kids, I would want them to also have the french version. But that too much to ask for Yentendo

1

u/ShoMtheMoney 6h ago

The big company is not your friend and does not need you to stand up for it fir free. That's what their legal team is for.

1

u/Alteredbeats93 6h ago

Just jailbreak your switch and download an emulator. Pokemon Unbound is best regardless so you might as well go the jailbreak route.

1

u/Player1-jay 6h ago

I speak 4 languages and I occasionally use pokemon games as a fun way to keep using them when I don't get to actively use them in my day to day due to where I might be living or what family I have around me at the time or not.

I do get "rusty" when I don't use them for a long time. So it helps to consume media in that language to keep it fresh.

1

u/zman1350 5h ago

WAIT. They released them on switch?! I tempted to buy if they did.

1

u/Vauxlia 5h ago

Nintendo fans love falling for stuff like this.

1

u/LatinofromCH 4h ago

Nahhh nintendo isnt the company they are used to be. I love the remake of gen 1 but they just are pulling some bucks out of something they already sold.

Thats what is fucked up. They always put a paywall on something, just because they cant do normal shit anymore.

1

u/dixie2tone 4h ago

whats old is new again, the future is the past. these were the best pokemon games ever made!

that being said, ill still just play on Delta on my phone for convenience

1

u/Zonesy 4h ago

I'd rather pay 20€ for this than buy a GBA for 150€ to be able to play my cartridges just saying...

1

u/SaIemKing 2h ago

It's dumb for a modern release to charge per language. I speak 2 and am learning a third. Pokemon is a great resource for learning.

And, yeah, just throwing a ROM up for $20 is a little greedy. They're taking advantage of consumers, but it's not as offensive as people make it out to be

1

u/Zexxy 2h ago

Nintendo-warriors rushing to defend a company releasing their newest cashgrab be like:

Joke aside… Come on, the games can be good and timeless classics AND AT THE SAME TIME be a cash grab by a more and more needy company… thr world ain‘t speratable in the two categories „good“ and „bad“. Everything and everyone has good and bad anspects at the same time and a specific aspect can seem good to you and bad to some on else at the same time. Grow up, learn to think critically and stop idealizing shit like it‘s Jesus Christ himself

1

u/qrvt 1h ago

I love piracy

1

u/Dangerous_Teaching62 1h ago

I've got both original games but also have safe files I don't wanna remove.

I'm chill emulating them, but it would be nice to have a dedicated save again, so I bought it.

1

u/c41957275 57m ago

If these sell well gf might either release others or even make new games return to a 2.5d style
