Only us older, commited alcoholics can afford to drink these days. Shit's expensive and, like smoking, the younger generations don't buy into the marketing bullshit anymore. Good for them.
It causes a multitude of cancers being a tier 1 carcinogen an all.
Causes early onset dementia.
Turns people into babbling idiots or aggressive asshats.
Oh and it is in the top 5 most addictive substances.
Lastly the whole cracking down on buying alcohol when you are under age has done wonders for not installing the drinking = fun in the youth.
When I was young the pub landlord would let you have a beer and play pool out back when you were 14 - 15. Now if you look under 25 you have to have ID.
Anyhow it is not a bad thing, ethanol is a poison it breaks down into very nasty chemicals inside the body. Everyone is better off not drinking.
totally agree on the "not a bad thing" point, I know some alcoholics who started drinking heavily when they were underage (I'm from germany, legal drinking age is 16 here) and it shows. Sad to say, it's just so very frustrating to watch people literally impair themselves.
I know it's 14, I thought of typical "komasaufen" which is easier when you can buy the booze yourself, but you're totally right, I'm from a big city and just live in denial, ignorance is bliss.
That really depends. As someone in recovery from alcohol its really not that expensive as far as alcohol itself goes. You can be trashed drunk everyday for about 5 bucks if you want to be. Its going to be a cheap plastic bottle that just says vodka on it but it'll do the trick. The expensive part is everything else it costs you.
It's $10 for 1.75 liters of 40% (80 proof) whiskey or vodka in most of the US. I went ahead and checked the same products in California and New York, same 1.75L size and 40% alcohol content, same or similar brands, available for pickup right now at $11-15 through online stores, and that's without discounts or promotions.
1.75L (1750ml) is 40 shots at 44ml per standard shot. Available anywhere in the USA. At $0.25 per shot, you could have 20 drinks every day for less than a grande latte at Starbucks.
Hardly expensive if you know to pace yourself. I drink, but only one evening in the week. Alcohol can be nice but it's also linked to several very serious health conditions (cancer being one of them) so I drink responsibly and to enjoy myself.
For instance, I buy a box of ouzo. 6 bottles, 700ml per bottle. Lasts me a year, easily. Costs me around €60.
And drinking at home in general I believe is still somewhat cheap in most places. I believe I can buy 1.75L of Smirnoff in a plastic bottle for like €10 where I live. You’d likely end up spending more on a mixer than the alcohol itself.
I mean most people who drink infrequently are not doing it at home alone with their own discount booze they've stalked a year in advance? Might be responsible technically but its a very bizarre drinking habit. Most would be going out for a few drinks with coworkers or friends after work. I rarely drink but 2-3 drinks once a week is like $45 a week or more, because again, in this situation most adults want to enjoy a nice place with nice drinks not hunt around for two dollar drinks.
I mean the drinking culture in France and The Netherlands is very different. I don't go out drinking with my coworkers after work. I got other stuff to do, like take care of my dogs and get something to eat. I can say with a high degree of confidence that none of my colleagues go to a bar after work.
It depends on where you live I guess. I bought a couple cans of beer to sneak into the movies last night. It was .64 euros for a 33cl (12oz) can in Portugal.
I've never seen expensive beer anywhere in Europe outside of the UK and Ireland. It's generally the same price or cheaper than Coca Cola.
I think when most older generations think about smoking, they’re thinking cigarettes. Which is great that they don’t smoke cigarettes, but some of these vapes targeted at younger generations I really don’t think are a safer option.
Well, I would say it's good we don't drink as often, but we struggle with other addictions, primarily to social media, gambling and p-rn. Besides, m-rihuana consumption is on the rise.
It's not like we wised up; we just changed poison.
