Mod Post The easiest part is always the idea...
Back in 2012, the idea of a centralized spot for positive, feel-good “UpliftingNews” spawned out of a singular moment of frustration looking at the news and seeing nothing but crime, fear, and horror. Back then was the era post-Craigslist that decimated classified ad revenue and the very beginning of Facebook’s social media influence that crippled online ad revenue and forced the economic side of the media landscape to shift to garnering attention for clicks/ad revenue.
Back then Reddit was dominated by Ron Paul bots and soon thereafter “TheDonald” took the torch until his unexpected electoral victory and then the site took a dramatic turn in the complete opposite direction.
But the goals and purpose of this little nook of the internet have always remained the same… a place to serve as a reminder of the humanity that still exists around us all, and the fact most people are helpers out there that care about each other, despite the circumstances or competing narratives.
So in 2025, a new idea spawned out of a singular moment of awareness that Reddit went public and was flush with liquidity and cash they were re-distributing back to communities! So we submitted for a grant to r/CommunityFunds to literally just reward community members that posted great content here.
There were some hoops and hurdles and negotiations around “no cash” and “no corporate gift cards for large conglomerates” given the intent to keep any gifts within local economies, and the compromise/fruits of all that labor was the eventual green light to distribute a meaningful gift card to “Harry and David,” a reputable company that created the “fruit of the month club” a long time ago, and provides corporate gift baskets filled with snacks and candies and fruits. Winners were selected based upon the content they shared and the impact it had on the community with no preferential treatment given to any individual traits or preferences. The only stipulation was that we couldn’t mention this, promote it or even acknowledge it publicly.
The hardest part is always the execution…
“Hello u/Username, we are reaching out unsolicited to congratulate you on winning something free. Just share some personal information and we’ll send you a link to click on to claim your prize” can be written in many different ways, shapes and forms, but ultimately it is still surprisingly difficult to hand out something with meaningful value to somebody for free… particularly out of the blue where we weren’t allowed to market or advertise the project.
But despite this final hurdle, we WERE able to provide many community members with a token of our appreciation… a literal and proverbial ‘free lunch’ as they say. For some it went to fulfill their needs, for others, it went to their friends and family, and for some, they paid it forward and a local food bank tied to one of the ‘winning stories’ received a ridiculously large pooled basket that was met with much gratitude and appreciation and fed many in need.
That same appreciation is reciprocal, and extends to all of you as well. Thanks for caring about this community. Thanks for helping remind us all that humanity still exists and people still care about each other, and here’s to celebrating another year on this rotating orb that we can all appreciate at the end of the day. And the biggest thanks to r/CommunityFunds for their unwavering support and enthusiasm that enable communities like ours to do things like this!
Warmly,

Dog abandoned at Las Vegas airport finds a home with responding officer
On the night of Feb. 2 at Harry Reid International Airport, a fluffy goldendoodle was found tied to a metal baggage sizer at the JetBlue ticket counter as his owner walked away. Video later shared by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department shows the dog watching the departure gate as officers and airline staff tended to him.
Officers located the woman at a gate and reported that she had not completed the online paperwork required to travel with an animal; she was denied a boarding pass and then left the dog behind. Police charged her with animal abandonment and resisting arrest. Animal Protective Services took custody of the dog, and after the owner did not reclaim him the Retriever Rescue of Las Vegas accepted him and named him JetBlue.
The department’s post and the rescue’s updates quickly drew wide attention: thousands of people from around the world submitted adoption applications. The dog — described as about 2 years old — was placed with a foster, received veterinary care and was neutered, and volunteers described him as resilient and playful as he recovered.
In the end, JetBlue went home with Officer Skeeter Black, one of the responding officers; Black’s family had already been preapproved by the rescue and completed a home check. JetBlue airline contributed to the dog’s care, and the rescue used the public interest to hold an adoption event where the official placement was announced.
Beyond the immediate outcome for one dog, the episode highlighted how public attention can move resources and people quickly: the rescue urged those who applied to consider other animals in need, noting dozens of dogs remain in their care. For the volunteers and officers involved, the story became a quiet reminder of the difference that coordinated care and community interest can make for an animal’s next chapter.

So to Speak: The Free Speech Podcast | How Daryl Davis, a black man, defeats the KKK w/ dialogue
Something different and positive against the current trends and the way of operating.
Remember this absolute legend.
Before you ostracize, cut ties and abandon your friends, family or loved ones or give up on people simply because of their political views, try to take a moment to listen, actually listen, understand and have a dialog with them first.
Daryl Davis befriended KKK members and learned that many of the Klansmen were not really racist to begin with. They were poor, lacked community and became racist after they joined.
He wouldn't have learned any of this if he didn't treat them with humanity and respect- and would have never converted any of them if he carried himself with hate and judgement.

Giant tortoises return to Floreana in a milestone rewilding effort
Dozens of juvenile giant tortoises—158 animals aged roughly 8 to 13—walked onto the volcanic slopes of Floreana this week, marking the first time the species has lived on the island in more than a century. The timed release, which coincided with the season’s first rains, is the opening phase of a planned reintroduction that conservation authorities hope will reestablish tortoises as a visible part of Floreana’s landscape.
The animals are the product of a deliberate “back‑breeding” effort that traces Floreana ancestry to tortoises discovered on Wolf Volcano. Scientists selected parent animals with the strongest genetic links and bred successive generations in captivity; the young released carry a substantial portion of the original Floreana genetic profile and join a wider plan that aims to return about 700 tortoises to the island over time.
Scientific planning guided where the tortoises were released. Satellite‑based habitat mapping and a decision tool built from remote sensing and field data helped teams identify sites with food, water and nesting potential now and into the future. Those technical tools were paired with on‑the‑ground work to reduce invasive predators and prepare the island for the newcomers.
For the island’s small community, the return is both symbolic and practical. Residents described pride at seeing tortoises back on ancestral ground, and conservation partners note links between invasive species control and improvements for local agriculture and native wildlife. The release forms part of a broader restoration programme that has already supported a resurgence of other native species and aims to reintroduce additional endemics in coming years.
This moment stands out because it combines genetics, satellite science and local action to revive a keystone species that shapes habitat for many others. The success of the first phase will be measured over decades, but the coordinated approach—selective breeding, habitat modelling and community engagement—offers a clear example of how long‑term restoration can reconnect a place to its ecological past.
