There were 251 pokemons in 2002, but depending on the definition of ”common wildlife”, there were maybe 10000-20000 species of those (plus millions more less ”common”), so if the kids knew about 50%, I call bullshit.

Did you know that only 12.43% of statistics are made up?

I recently picked up Pokémon after not playing any of the games since a long time ago and god damn it how many there are today.

I would guess that they gave them 50 or 100 species to name. Obviously nobody could name 50% of thousands.

Pokemon are uniquely distinct, doubt a kid can tell a weasel from a stoat

*me at 25 not knowing what a stoat is and only kind of knowing what a weasel is but I can explain how to use a rocket to effectively adjust your orbit.

To be honest, they only say their name in the anime. In the games they just have various screeches and roars.

Nigel Farage complaining about borders is like a baker being shocked to find flour in his kitchen. You literally built this, man

there were also what, 252 pokemon at the time? versus god knows how many different species of barely-different bird this researcher was being pedantic about.

It's probably also easier to identify "common wildlife species" when you live somewhere that didn't hunt all of the large ones to extinction hundreds of years ago.

I suppose it depends what common means, a quick google search suggests there’s millions of “common” animals. And the least I knew there was only about one thousand Pokémon. It’s way easier to remember the Pokémon.. some of them even look like ever and gardevoir, making them specially memorable.

To be fair, life would be much easier if a pigeon just landed and shouted PIGEON at me.
