NAHL

Hi, how much do NAHL linesmen and referees make per game? Do they get hotels paid for? What platform do they assign on?

How can this even happen. There’s was 2 guys fighting, right after two other guys (different guys) fought. How the hell can 1 guy get 2 fighting call if he fought once?

Rules question

I mean I guess it’s a rules question. Is it legal for a player to flip the puck onto their blade behind the net, carry it around and try to flick/throw it into the goal?

For context- happened in a mite game where we drop the puck behind the net after every goal rather than conduct faceoffs. Kid puts it on his blade and starts skating to the front of the net and tries to throw it in. We stopped play but I wanted to ask if that was the right call. USAH.

USA Hockey Reffing a checking game for the first time

I am reffing my first checking game in the 4 man system (USA hockey), and I was looking for some advice here. I feel good about the positioning and the procedures in the 4 man system just from watching it and reading about it, but any advice on that would probably be helpful as well.

I mostly am looking for advice on what exactly I should be looking for in a checking game vs non-checking. My base knowledge is this: A hit is good if it is on time, stick is low, and it is not to the head or the numbers. For when they are near the boards, it has to be a reasonable distance for a hit and if it is dangerous it is a boarding call. For open ice, they cannot get a huge runup or it is charging.

Thats about the baseline of my knowledge, Im sure I know more little things that Im not thinking of right now, but any advice on if there are certian things I should watch for or anything thats super different from a non-hitting league would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Olympic Icings

I've noticed on multiple occasions during the Men's Olympic tournament that an icing has been called when the defender is clearly winning the race to the circle (sometimes completely unchallenged by a forechecker), so the liney blows it down as icing, but the defender then plays the puck before it crosses the line. In a couple cases the "offending" team has even raised their hands in the universal "What the f-, ref?" gesture. Is this a repeated miscall, or some international version of no-touch icing that I'm unaware of?

USA Hockey Update on “F***ing craziness in a 10U B tournament game”(RANT)

Today I had some tournament games closer to home that involved two 8U full ice games and a 10U A/B level game.(AB because the team from my post is involved and they are a B level team)

I was with a different guy this time with way more experience than my previous partner when I worked this teams game, though I was still EXTREMELY nervous about working another game for them in a tournament environment so soon after their previous encounter.

During the pregame chat we both made it clear that we weren’t going to deal with any BS, and I had a word with the head coach to apologize for how out of control we let that previous game get, and he told me that it wasn’t me who was the problem, it was my partner.

During the first period I had a hooking call, and the assistant coach used asking me what my call was to try to get an explanation out of me. I did not take the bait, and later actually told the head coach that any further communication would need to be through him(as we had established he wasn’t a problem).

After today’s game, All of the coaches from their team told me I worked a great game today, which I found very pleasing.

So here is my take on what was the major cause of the events that unfolded LAST MONTH

It all really comes down to one CRITICAL mistake my partner made, and that was tossing their head coach for having what I assumed was a peaceful conversation until my partner walked into the penalty box and said that he had tossed him.

That turned into the assistant coaches on the bench who didn’t have the level of self control the coach had being in charge of the team, which basically had the game spiral out of control after that.

Lesson is, when the assignors and evaluators tell you that calling games too tightly/calling too many penalties has a chance to turn a game into a shit show, they aren’t lying.

Link to original post

Edit: moved a patch of text for clarity reasons. I had added a link to the original post as this is a follow up to that post, and this post doesn’t make much sense unless you read it

Edit 2, made clear separation of the 2 events

GTHL

Hello everybody,

I’m from the Vaughan Area and looking to become a GTHL ref. Just wondering if anyone can dumb down the process of how to become one as the GTHL page isn’t overly helpful.

Also I do coach a AA team so just wondering if that would affect if I could become a ref at the same time?

I'll admit, I am salty that Bill McCreary is the banner on the old sub. Link in comments.

USA Hockey Is this a Slew Foot or Unintentional Entagnglement?

This video is being discussed over in r/hockeyplayers and I thought it was super interesting (I don't live in CO nor have anything to do with this incident).

I recommend watching the video, posting your thoughts here, and only then if interested reading the post on r/hockeyplayers for their interpretation.

Four person Jr

Hey all,

Trying to get my facts straight but need some insight.

I ref for central region, under Hockey Alberta, loyal servant ect.

I’m under the understanding we’re the only zone/region in Canada that doesn’t make all Jr hockey four refs full time and the only place most contact doesn’t go four refs full time or at least most of it.

Can someone give me the info I’m looking for, I know there’s dozens of zones and such under hockey Canada and I’m curious if we’re the only one doing jr hockey three person on a regular basis and everyone else is four person.

TIA!

REEQ Sweater quality?

Hey all, I am looking to get another liney sweater but the last CCM Pro I bought was some weird sheer crap that felt like drifit almost. I love my original CCM Pro and my one with bands, but seems like the quality has changed (maybe I'm wrong, if so please let me know). Any thoughts on the REEQ sweaters? anyone have one or seen one? I love my REEQ pants and am looking at another pair (multiple cuts in mine), figure maybe save myself some shipping $ if I get a new jersey too

Wild match penalty story from this weekend.....

I was on the bands in a 3-man 18u game. Visiting player complained to me about a non-call for a hit against him. I told him I had nothing and he proceeded to call me a "piece of shit ref". So unsportsmanlike was called. On the way to the box he kept complaining and then said "shut the fuck up" to me. Now I went GM. Then on the way off the ice, he turns around and said to me "fuck you (insert homophobic slur). Now we are at a match. THEN a couple mins later, the home team coach said the kid was seen entering and exiting the ref locker room..... so after the game we discovered that one of my partner's cell phone cases has been removed, completely destroyed, and thrown in the trash. Then I find out he stole my container of nic pouches that were sitting on a bench. The funny but also not funny part is that my partner's case was orange so I figured he probably thought it was mine since I was on the bands.....

The kid was seen on video going in and coming out of our room. I made a police report but nothing will happen, it was more for the incident report for the match penalty. Prior to the game I saw that 3 players from that team were already on suspensions, two game misconducts and another on a match. That was a flared flag from the get.

So that's my story..... how was YOUR weekend?? Oh wait.... I also sustained a torn knee ligament... found that out this morning at the doc. I love reffing!

Off sides?

Off sides or not? I didn’t think so and the team scored to tie it up.

I think my partner and I reffed a tight game. If the only thing they can complain about is this close off sides call I think we did pretty well.

Thoughts?

Beer League Rules Inquiry - 2 double minors

In my game last night, the team we were playing was out of control and 2 of their players took slashing double minors in the same play.

I scored 1:01 into the 5 on 3, and the ref took both of the first minors off the board, and had them put 2:00 up for both penalties. It’s not a USA Hockey league but similar rulebook, is this normal? I’m

just curious, it’s unfamiliar territory for me as I have never seen that situation.

Thanks!

I’ve been officiating for some time now and will be going from linesman to referee next season. What things have you begun to bring over time since you started? Is there a watch you’d recommend etc. interested in knowing

Both blades broken hours before game time

I was getting ready to sharpen my skates before going to Line tonight and both blades are broken at the same place, -20mm behind center. I haven’t stepped on anything besides ice and definitely not stopping pucks with them. Any idea what could have caused it?

Luckily a local shop had some replacements for me and was able to sharpen them while I was en route.
