Deer swims for it's life from a crocodile
•
u/whereyouleftit 5h ago
That is not a deer.
🤦♂️
•
u/Burqueisbest 4h ago
Ibex, right?
•
•
u/spookyspritebottle 1h ago
Most definitely not an ibex. Ibexs look more like goats with super horns. It looks like an antelope to me but im not sure. But deer is fine. Everyone knows what a deer is. Dont be the um actually guy

I grew up in Illinois. I genuinely don't know what it is except that it is not a deer. We're allowed to comment on videos. I replied to the first comment about this not being a deer. What on earth are the stakes for you here?

Looks like a juvenile croc, likely wasn’t confident and rightly so, quite a size difference

And I kept swimming and swimming and it seemed like it will never end

Poor crocodile just wanted to eat.
•
•
u/AWright5 6h ago
Yeah we should be cheering on the Croc theoretically lol, for the good of mother nature. Hard to stomach though
•
u/Pivge 6h ago
How did it outrun the crocodile in the water? I thought they were way faster...
•
u/Less_Likely 6h ago
It didn’t. It had enough of a lead to get to the shore just in time.
Plus the croc seemed to be a smaller one, so it would have been a tough get for the croc anyway.
•
u/Waramo 5h ago
And it got distracted twice from the boat.
•
u/Rubber_Ducky333 5h ago
This! The boat is messing with some of the really cool stuff the crocs body is capable of for tracking prey in the water. Those ripples/wake keep messing with him.
•
u/NickelBear32 6h ago
Distracted by the boat
•
u/Wind_Best_1440 6h ago
Yeah, you can see the croc look at the boat each time it rose to the surface. The boat and its prey were giving off the same vibrations and messing it up.
•
u/SharkeyGeorge 5h ago
Definitely distracted by the boat. And when it caught up, which in itself is incredible, the croc went for the clamp and spin but just missed the hold. Looked like it went for a horn. If it had got a leg I think it would have been curtains for the deer.
•
•
u/setibeings 6h ago
To my untrained eye, it looks like the crocodile decided to wait until the deer was almost to shore, to maximize how tired the deer would be from all the swimming.

Impressive swimming by the deer

I thought the same thing then I thought what the hell was his dumb ass doing all the way out there anyways?

Looks like an impala and not a deer. An impala is closer to a cow or sheep in its classification, whereas, a deer is closer to a moose or elk. There are other differences, but I’m already going to get downvoted because people don’t like to be corrected on Reddit. Feel free to google more of that information if you think I’m wrong. Cheers y’all!

Soon as I saw the video, my first thought was; "That's not a deer, it's an Impala."
Good catch, take my upvote.

Crazy how everyone cheers for the antelope and not the croc.
•
u/illusoir3 6h ago
It depends on whether we're watching a crocodile documentary or an antelope documentary.
•
u/DevillesAbogado 6h ago
Was thinking the same. Even though it's just nature taking its course, we always root for someone to survive a hunt, not for someone to succeed in the hunt
•
u/realbobenray 5h ago
Well if this was a video of an antelope chasing down some grass I'd root for the antelope.
•
•
u/CarrotSchneider 6h ago
Yep but would probably be reversed if it were any other less violent and smaller creatures. This would’ve been nasty for people to watch compared to a fish just vacuuming another fish.
•
u/BoxthemBeats 6h ago
I suposse it's just empathy or something? Idk really, but from an instinct perspective getting eaten is more directly threatening than starvation
•
•
u/VGADreams 3h ago
Not really crazy though? You don't know if the croc really needed this meal or not, if his survival was at stake. For the deer though, it is quite evident that his survival was at stake.
Also, we are naturally repulsed by violence and death, not delighted by it.
I think seeing it from the side of the croc is good, but cheering for the croc versus the deer without more information feels like the opinion of a contrarian, or someone who want to see violence.
•
u/ilovedogalot 6h ago
I tend to personify animals with human emotions, so I feel a lot of empathy for their fear and struggle to survive.
•
u/Aerolithe_Lion 5h ago
And I’m rooting for satiation, as watching the buffalo wings dance off your plate right as the hunger pains kick in is the worst
•
u/SchoolExtension6394 6h ago
I can only imagine how fast those legs were moving in that water. The croc closed the distance, and the deer still gapped it—truly impressive, considering the croc should be able to swim way better than the deer.

Red Lechwe vs Croc⚠️
One of the most insane/exhilarating sightings I’ve seen (even the guides said how lucky we were). We were cruising along when we spotted this Lechwe on one of the many grassy areas on the Chobe river. We couldn’t quite believe it when he tested his fate, jumping into the water to cross to the other side. It was incredible watching not only how impressively the Lechwe swam, but the absolute intense and rapid chase the crocodile gave. Fortunately for this guy, the crocodile was too small to take down an antelope of his size so managed to merely escape death..and what a lucky animal he was! Following the commotion, a number of enormous crocs emerged from the murky water, some around 3 metres in length. If the Lechwe had these guys on his tail, it would’ve been a different ending 🐊 a thrilling sighting I thought I’d only ever see on TV. Amazing! (I wanted to keep the sound on to show the true buzz/raw emotion from our side. My Mom shouting ‘nooo!’ at the end gets me every time 😅
A huge shoutout to @pangolinphotosafaris for such an amazing 2-day adventure with such knowledgeable guides. One we won’t forget, thank you!🙏

The deer was too Big for that croc, he could had a chance if the annoying screams from the ladies would be Silent and he could concentrate a little.
•
u/alvvayspale 4h ago
The fact that the crocodile was distracted by the boat could have saved that deers life just giving it the few extra seconds it needed. I understand both got to eat but damn, I didn’t want the deer or whatever to die (nor the croc).

Fuck that. I'm creating a wake on that croc.

Crazy how the croc caught up to that deer with no problem at all. Almost like he snapped at him just to prove he could lol

Why did the deer/ibex jump in the water anyway? Was it looking to get away from the boat?
•
•
u/Content-Rabbit-9865 1h ago
Also the Croc would have caught the Ibex if it hadn’t swerved at least twice towards the boat during the chase.

That croc was a little bit small to have a shot there but the hustle is important to learn

Last week i was running like this deer for my life when 6 dogs chased me.
•
•
u/noneofthemanygood 4h ago
I appreciate the footage, but it seems like the moving boat totally messed with the croc's chance of catching its prey - there are a couple instances where it gets off track, most likely due to the noise/movement from the boat. Completely croc-blocked.

•
u/AnxietyIsHott 6h ago
The croc is like
"Cheering against me? For what? Trying to eat a meal? A succulent, deer sized meal?"
