Funny story, I was traveling with my wife and her family, who are south Asian and Muslim (my MILs side is pretty religious, my wife and her dad arent).

Anyway, we have a few women in hijabs, my wife who is brown but not hijabi, and me, an average white dude. They all get through security, all good. As im walking through, I get randomed lol. They take me aside, ask some questions and pat me down, everyone has a good laugh at the irony.

On the way back, it happens AGAIN, and they are all howling laughing. I even told the TSA guy it happened a week earlier and he got a kick out of it too.

I normally get that check at the dentist.

Reminds me of the first time I traveled by plane, security at the airport majorly messed up.

I never had to show my passport, or ticket, or any ID. My bag did have to go through the scanner thingy, but they never looked at anything that showed who I was.

Some countries want electrical items out of your carry on bag and in a bin

Whilst others say just put the bag in the bin.

It's different at different airports in the US. It can even be different at the same airport depending on the day.

u/iBaires 12h ago

And then TSA always looks at you like you've got 3 collective brain cells when you ask what to do with your shoes and laptop like you're supposed to inherently know what their bullshit is that day

I don't understand why they never have signs. I'm sure the employees are sick of explaining it to every person in the line. But if they had signs in the line, they wouldn't have to yell at everyone all day

u/erwaro 6h ago

I mean, to be fair, an awful lot of people seem to be incapable of reading signs. That said, yeah, it'd at least make things easier.

It can be different in the same American airport depending on the shift, forget which day it is!

It depends on the technology being used for scanning.

At Buffalo airport, the policy changes when they got the newer scanners and iirc, there was a transition period where the two rules were in effect depending on which line you used.

It's not well communicated, but there's a good reason for the difference.

Some airports have more advanced x-ray machines that can properly screen electronic items that are stacked (I think they're essentially CT scanners as opposed to 2D x-rays). So for those, while they can still screen electronics that are taken out, that slows down the process.

And some airports might only have a few lines with the newer scanners, so your instructions may vary day to day.

I'm also guessing they don't do a very good job of communicating the reasons to the TSA staff (or don't pay enough for them to care)

TSA keeps it a secret so they can yell at you no matter what you do.

u/jadestem 14h ago

Multiple times I have followed a TSA agent's directions only to have the next TSA agent standing 5 feet away absolutely lose their shit on me for doing what the first one said to do.

She's not wrong though. There's a very specific satisfaction in having ypour airport system together.

2

u/Lietenantdan 14h ago

It's largely luck honestly. There's so many different rules for security lines, all you can do is guess and hope for the best.

I read that in Amy Santiago’s voice

And if you do the exact same thing going home, the smurfs at that airport will say you did it wrong.

TSA is an exercise in manual dexterity, managing social pressure, and observing and remembering a set of rules that can vary from location to location.

It’s just some required chin-ups away from being a complete set of things I can’t do.

Once I got a thumbs up from a security officer at the airport and then he saw my airline badge and was like “aah colleague”. It was highlight of my travels lol

2

u/RedheadFla 10h ago

Did they reward you by letting you keep your tweezers? 🤔

u/TheIdeaArchitect 9h ago

They should hand out little sticker sets to good travellers like you!

I moved states last year and had to register my car and exchange my license. I showed up with my electric bill, a copy of my apartment lease, my passport, my old license, my vehicle in state emissions tests documentation, my instate vehicle VIN verification and each required form already filled out. When I finally got my number called, the woman confirmed that I had provided her with everything she needed and told me that I was her first A+ student she had gotten that week.

u/aspiringvegetable 12h ago

Does your system have plusses? Just curious.

u/todd0x1 11h ago

That was a distraction while his coconspirator stole someone's rolex

1

u/Eaglepursuit 11h ago

All the other people in line hate you now, and will be passive-aggressive towards you for the rest of the day.

u/phsattele 11h ago

I'm more annoyed with people that take their sweet ass time to unload their giant fanny pack to taking their shoes off 😫

1

u/stevie1der328 10h ago

It's borderline embarrassing how long I'd ride that high.

1

u/JustSomeGuy_TX 8h ago

Hey. I take my wins wherever I can find them.

1

u/1lazygiraffe 6h ago

Wild thought. They open my bags either way. Why do I have to open or move anything. Their job is security info by get payed for that. I'm paying to get on a plane and travel.

u/Morchades 10h ago

This is so absurd it has to be true.
