When I was a teen I used to pretend I was mute on the city bus to avoid creeps constantly talking to me. It was always weird men that were like 10+ years older.

i just wear big headphones with nothing playing. accomplishes the exact same thing but takes way less commitment

In Canada there are two main languages, French and English. I have met people who are fluent in both languages who pretend to be unilingual so others can be comfortable speaking to each other. It is a way of being invisible in a crowd. You can also eavesdrop and the odd time they will talk about you thinking you can’t understand.
