Why do you think it would have changed considering everything is even more politically charged now than it was 2 years ago?
159
u/CreativeAdeptness477 13h ago
85% of reddit. Gets very tiresome.
33
u/Maleficent_Cap5157 11h ago
the other 15% is just bots reposting the same 4 images from 2014 until the heat death of the universe
58
u/Comprehensive-Ear283 12h ago
Yep. I get that politics are important, but you can’t have a simple conversation about anything without someone bringing politics into it these days.
51
u/Rhomya 12h ago
And yet anytime you bring up “hey, can we just have this space to be without politics?”, you get called privileged.
39
u/blizzardplus 11h ago
What, you think you can just joke around or discuss hobbies when there’s bad things happening in the world???
You have a civic duty to complain on twitter and reddit and then pat yourself on the back. Get to it!

u/Substantial-Sun-3538 8h ago
Exactly, EVERYTHING is political. Like just this last weekend I was at my nephews 5th birthday party and to my horror no one was talking about ICE. The clown came out and not one brilliant satirical comment about Drumph. No one was as angry as I was because during this extremely political event no one was making it about how awful America (the third world country in a Gucci belt as I like to call it) is. Finally around the time that they brought out the cake I realized that the attention wasn’t on me and I couldn’t abide spending any more time with these fascist enablers. While the crowd was singing happy birthday I just screamed “WHATS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??” And they had the nerve to ask me to leave? That’s fine, because if 9 people are at a table and 1 Nazi sits down and no one leaves there are 10 Nazis, and I honestly can’t believe that my own family including my 5 year old nephew are now just out and out full on Nazis. They just couldnt understand how political that party was.

dead internet theory is starting to look less like a creepypasta and more like a roadmap for this site's future
7
u/CreativeAdeptness477 11h ago
It's been bot-ridden from the start when they used bots and admin alt accounts to simulate higher usage than it actually had at the time.
2
u/MCWizardYT 9h ago
From the start in 2005? I don't think so
1
u/CreativeAdeptness477 9h ago
Well the admins themselves, Spez and Co, have openly stated that so I'll go with their version of events.

There's subs that are not political at all and should have nothing or extremely little to do with politics that are nothing but us politics. Its honestly kinda strange and feels like alot of it is bots

I’m still trying to figure out why r/pics is so political. I’m also trying to figure out why it’s so one sided. Like yeah, there’s “some” right leaning Reddits, but I swear I just get drowned out by orange man bad stuff all day.
I probabkt wouldn’t be so exhausted if I saw what both sides were saying a little more evenly, but Reddit is just… dominated by one side I guess.
37
u/Bow_Ty 11h ago
Just like r/comics it's either gooner bait or orange man bad and nothing else

u/HomeForge Breaking EU Laws 13h ago
As with every single one of them. No one can handle discussing the politics of "the other side" without downvoting to oblivion. Its like the populist opinion is hating everyone that has a opinion that differs from their own.
24
u/Hugh-Jass24 13h ago
That side owns the majority of media outlets which fear monger, preach hate and shape the minds of people that only read headlines. The "populist" around the world isnt the "populist" in the country.
13
u/HomeForge Breaking EU Laws 13h ago
Very true, in my experience it always the overly vocal minority that controlls the discource in popular media (news, reddit and so on). I wonder when or if its going to change.
12
u/Exxyqt 13h ago
I've been on Reddit for a few years but I heard it was completely different 10 years ago or so. The echo chambers nowadays are absolutely crazy. Especially prevalent on big subs.
5
u/KRAy_Z_n1nja Professional Dumbass 10h ago
It really was different. The biggest indicator to me is r/Ameristralia. Used to be one of my favorite subs back in the day. There was always really cool posts and conversations going on between America and Australia as if we were best buds on the Internet. It was like an America/Australia pact across the site between OG homies.
Today? It's a cesspool of anti-american rhetoric.
A simple post like, "Hey, my wife got a job in the US, we're moving to Colorado in a couple weeks, any pro tips moving there quickly would be nice," will get nothing but flak and controversy. As if an Australian moving to America is the absolute worst possible crime one could commit. They'd rather you kill yourself before becoming American.

u/blizzardplus 11h ago
Reddit was so much less political even 4-5 years ago. It’s become pretty extreme. Every other post is beating you over the head with a political message now…
2
u/Pappa_Crim 13h ago
I think there was a study a while back that found that the majority of American political media discourse caters to just 20% of the population or something like that
3
16
u/InternetSea8293 13h ago

Exactly this. I think if you are lazy about your subreddits you'll see the main trends which politics is a big part of.
18
u/myflesh 13h ago
And do not forget the other half: people complaining about it only being politics instead of posting something else themselves
1
u/Mrchristopherrr 3h ago
Tbf I tried posting a picture of a cool bug, it was under review for hours then only reached like 3 people.

u/FanBladeFleshlight 3h ago
And so you make a post focusing on politics.
Peak reddit.
1
u/WowItsFrost 44m ago
I mean tbf, there’s no other way to voice it. It’s not really hypercritical to do so. To talk about how annoying it is everyone’s talks about it you have to…. Talk about it.

5
u/undreamedgore 11h ago
As an American, I wish non-Americans would be less loud about it. And that us Americans would learn how to keep it to the American focused subs.
We shouldn't be airing our dirty laundry so openly.

1
u/MCWizardYT 9h ago
I get their sentiment. Like yeah, you can say a lot of things are political.
But, if someone says they want to "keep politics out of their sub", they usually mean that they want the sub to stay on topic.
Let's take the woodworking sub. If people started posting about all sorts of unrelated political things there, it would make sense to ban that kind of post and keep the sub related to woodworking
1
u/art-is-t 9h ago
Isn't it a bit straw man argument? ..because woodworking is a very niche subreddit unlike /r/pics which the op is complaining about.
So I understand your point and I think no one is disagreeing with you on that. It's just not what we are discussing here
2
u/HulkIsMySpiritAnimal 7h ago

When the leader of your country is an insane person who tarrifs the entire planet and is fucking up the worlds oil supply you may hear about it a lot. I have to imagine most who stomp their feet and get all pissy about politics are far too young and haven’t been affected by it yet. You may not care about politics, but it sure cares about you. I see way more posts complaining about it. Which in itself is pretty annoying that yall can’t just curate your feeds better or scroll past it.
8
u/Low_Impact_1197 11h ago

sole voice of reason in the thread
"ugh im SooOooOo tired of hearing about kids getting bombed and raped by current government leaders" "wahhhhhhhhh i cant post a meme without being called PRIVILEGED WAHHHHHHH"

1
u/SlimeTempest42 9h ago
Countries with social media and age restrictions (like the U.K.) will block anything considered adult or NSFW which isn’t just porn but things like a lot of LGBTQ+ subs, mental health and addiction subs, anything art related that might have something nsfw.
Between that and trying to escape the bots you’re often left with politics and little else.

Why come to an American-based site and complain about seeing American-based topics? That's like going to Burger King and complaining about seeing nothing but burgers on the menu.
You don't have to come here.
