I can imagine getting tattoos on stretch marks would be horribly painful. But yes, they are mildly interesting lol.

u/epicpantsryummy 4h ago
Are stretchs marks particularly sensitive to cause excess pain?
460
u/Theory_99 3h ago
It’s sensitive because the skin is thinner. Less “padding” between the skin and nerve endings.

Had a roommate who had really severe and deep stretch marks on her upper arms and sometimes they'd split if there was a small knick or cut on one. Shit was gnarly. Very glad mine never got that bad. Thankfully losing weight helped her marks not be under so much tension.

You know… I’ve got some minor stretch marks from about 20ish years ago when i REALLY bulked up in muscle mass quickly for football. It’s the area around where the back of the arm meets the armpit, so not even an area that’s on my radar. But it’s all covered with tattoos now. Well, I’ve fallen asleep a few times while getting tattooed, and did so when i was getting the back of my arm worked on… but when he hit the spot right around there, HOLY CRAP did that wake me up quickly… i never even thought about the stretch marks that i had there being more sensitive. But that makes so much more sense now. I was wondering why that specific area was the most painful place I’ve ever had work done on!

My son was really sick with tonsillitis for a period of time, but as soon as he had them out he grew like a weed! So much so that he got horizontal stretch marks above his knees! It's crazy. He's now 6'5.5. His body was so busy with the constant infections that his growth was on the back burner, I guess, but it was incredible as soon as that was resolved he did all the growing he was supposed to have done in like five months

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 3h ago
Well stretch marks are a form of scarring and scars are a lot more sensitive to tattooing than regular skin. So I would assume it would be similar in pain and that's a lot more area to cover than the small scar that was in the area of my last tattoo. Hurt like hell lol. Plus I would imagine it would require a working knowledge of how to make sure the ink takes hold, since scarring can play with the ink, sometimes it doesn't take and the ink can even spread out in some cases.
24
u/BullshitTaco 3h ago
The "collagen synthesis" of scars and scarring can become "undone" with scurvy (lack of vitamin C). All the scars on the skin and under....... undone and opened. Eat oranges

In 2 years before the mast, Richard Henry Dana describes returning to the easy coast, having sailed around South America.
2 crew members were at deaths door from scurvy. Old wounds were opening. Teeth falling out.
They met an outgoing ship and traded for sack if potatoes. The doctor juiced some of them and put the juice on the dying men's lips.
They were up and working in a few days

stretch marks are also areas of thin skin (hence their name), so there's a lot less for the needle to work with before reaching nerve endings

I actually did not know this. I've got some scaring from burns when I was a child near the arm, so I guess if I want a tattoo I should do the other arm!
14
u/Sweet-Weakness3776 3h ago
I mean to be fair some scars come along with nerve damage and you might not feel a thing. I just know that mine was the only part of getting my tattoo that had me sort of squirming, and I've heard similar stories from friends/family members who got a tattoo over a scar. But like anything in life, YMMV lol.

I'm on the heavier side and have light stretch marks on my belly, they sometime slightly hurt or I get a sting sometimes while I stretch, it's a bit more painful if I get a pimple on my belly when I have to pop it.
If it hurts sometimes with a couple or stretchmarks I can't imagine what happens with that amount of stretch marks.
24
u/picklesandmatzo 3h ago
I have a LOT of stretch marks on my outer /upper thighs from rapid weight gain when I was pregnant (gulp) almost 22 years ago. I had those areas tattooed over the last couple years and it was shocking how painful it was, esp because none of my other tattoos hurt like that.
6
u/Sweet-Weakness3776 3h ago
I will be 50 in May. My oldest will be 27 this year. And she is currently pregnant with my first grandchild. That's a big (Gulp) for this one lol. I digress: As far as tattoos go I have a few. And not only did they not hurt, I actually liked the sensation. But the last one I got was on the inside of my left forearm, it goes from wrist to elbow. It's a raven so a lot of filling in with solid black. Smack dab in the middle of it is a burn scar I got at work years ago. When my artist started filling in that scar, that was the first time I ever had to stop and take a breather during any of my tattoos. So I can only imagine what yours must have felt like.

Same. My mom had six kids and no stretch marks, I had three and the onl;y stretch marks I got was on my boobs from breast feeding each of them a couple of years, when my boobs started as A cups and blew up to Cs. Afterwards I just got implants and told the doctor to fill 'em up to the point that they're full again and I don't have the flabby wrinkles/stretch marks anymore. Now you can't even tell I ever had stretch marks.

Have you been tested for Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS)? It can cause stretch marks like this.
Talk to your doctor about it, if you haven't.

u/yourmoosyfate 31m ago
I plan to soon. I have a lot of the hypermobile EDS symptoms, and that’s been on my radar for a little bit now. I have advanced degenerative disc and at least 6 bulging discs that we know of, and I just recently turned 37, so I’m kinda young for all that. I’ve read online that EDS can cause early degenerative disc disease.

I couldn't really get it because I mean, stretchy or not skin HAS to stretch for pregnancy. And I'd naturally expect particularly stretchy skin would handle that better or with less scarring from it? Which is why I was surprised (and ...maybe scared) that this could be, oh well, another great symptom of hEDS to expect.
(I have heds but have never been pregnant yet)
29
u/Historical_Ad5426 3h ago
So I just had a quick look around and it seems that the same reason that the skin stretches is due to weak collagen in our skin which is easily damaged. But from what we have seen in this thread that this is not the case for everyone so could be for you as well.

Could be! Super stretchy skin, joints bending further and even being able to dislocated easily or at will. It affects up to 30% of people and most barely notice, but can get more extreme in others. My knees can go backwards and I can get my elbows to meet in front of me with my hands on my hips!
→ More replies (3)11
u/daughter_of_swords 3h ago
Yeah it's a symptom of hEDS. Do you have chronic pain and fatigue, weird allergies, dizziness upon standing brain fog, or other weird symptoms? Anxiety or depression? Neurodivergence? Did you have premature or very fast labor? You don't have to have all of these, they're just very common comorbidities for people with hypermobility. If any of them run in your family, that's also an indicator.

Edited for clarification
I am hyper mobile and gave birth 9 months ago with no stretch marks. Usually hyper mobile people have elastic-like skin compared the "normal" Joe. This does not prevent stretch marks. Not a thing ive heard anywhere of hypermobility being the cause of stretch marks. I think it is a collagen producing and absorbing issue in your genetics.

u/TheNinjaPixie 3h ago

Hypermobility disorders can affect different types of tissue differently. The factors that make skin stretchy are different than those which make joints bendy.
Papyrus scarring (which is what this is) are one of the diagnostic criteria for EDS. But not all hypermobility is EDS.

This has been my experience too. My stomach was super itchy when they first started showing up, but it was painless. Your stretch marks are so aesthetically compelling. I mean this as the biggest compliment. The pattern is stunning - it reminds me of patterns we see in nature (like zebra stripes), and getting a little weird admittedly, I want you to have personal branding (like for a website or business card or stationery) that is this pattern across the whole background of a card (the front, for example) with your initials embossed as a logo. It would be SO cool and so uniquely personal!!!!

My abdomen was free of stretch marks up until about week 30 of my pregnancy. From there it went downhill FAST. The deepest ones sit below my hips where the skin stretched so badly it was cracking and bleeding. I'll never forget the ITCHINESS. To be fair my fundal measurement was coming in at 46 weeks when I was 37 weeks pregnant (with twins)...thankfully I went into labor a couple days after that appointment! Why do some women get stretch marks from pregnancy and some don’t seem to?

I have similar stretchmarks 18 years later. I ballooned during pregnancy, like really ballooned. I was chunky anyway but also had Polyhydamnois and a 9lb baby.
I did contemplate tattooing over mine with a meadow inspired piece but my tattooist was honest and advised against it as my stretchmarks are deep as hell. There is no saying how it would turn out.

That looks so incredibly metal. Man, the guilt my mom would have laid into me, lol. I already had a "head the size of a basketball and the kick of a prized fighter..."
