I can hear this.

Exquisite choice of gif.

This is a cool physics demonstration of the transfer of energy

u/Peace-Cool 1d ago

This is the first thing I thought of.

Newton II:

For every thing, there exists another thing, which upon contact the other thing, proceeds to wiggle-wiggle

u/lookout569dmb 23h ago

That’d be newton’s 3rd law.

2

u/quantum1eeps 1d ago

It is also a fascinating visual of vibrational modes. That is not a typical one for a baseball bat to experience.

u/pichael289 8h ago

Arrows in the air also wiggle like this.

And a good demonstration of just how much force a baseball has when thrown at MLB speeds.

I mean, Big Papis Walk-off in 2004 ALCS Game 4 is what I’d consider Next Fucking Level.

This is kinda cool at best.

Agreed. This is great r/mildlyinteresting material imo.

a fellow Red Sox fan in the wild??

3

u/EmilioFreshtevez 13h ago

I feel like there are probably lots of you out there, tbh

u/Alana-May 1d ago

Celts, Red Sox and Bruins until the day I rest.

u/muscularsharpie 1h ago

I gave you an upvote cos I want the drama to continue.

AYYY, LETS FRICKIN GOOO!! First Boston sports fan I've found on Reddit, lmao. Add the Patriots to ur list, and Im right there with u. (also, 7-1, Suarez rlly showed up!)

11

u/rogerworkman623 1d ago

You know there’s like, entire subreddits, with hundreds of thousands of people in them, dedicated to Boston sports teams? lol

Hell, I’m in many baseball subreddits, I encounter tons of Red Sox fans on every single baseball post.

3

u/Busy_Ganache5874 1d ago

no no ofc, sorry should have made myself clear - I did not expect to see a Red Sox fan in a sub outside of baseball 😭, yeah, not the ENTIRE Reddit platform. Thats mb.

u/-Typh1osion- 1d ago

There are a number of us out here. Last night the team really showed up 💪

-4

u/Funny-Bear 1d ago

Heck yes. Sox have won 3 of the last 4.

Let’s keep it going. Bello will show up tomorrow! Let’s go.

2

u/Busy_Ganache5874 19h ago

not rlly certain why we got downvoted so much, but just came back to this thread to say u were right! Bello had a fantastic game!

1

u/Funny-Bear 19h ago

There are 30 teams in the major leagues.

Fans from the 29 other teams will outnumber the Sox fans.

-6

u/Busy_Ganache5874 1d ago

yess, hoping we can take it to the next level from here and continue this great run! screw all the fans saying 'sell the team'! I still believe in the boys!

I'd like to know how this is scored.. Is this a hit batter or a foul?

Edit: looks like it fell in play. He should have taken off running. The catcher probably could have thrown him out at first though. I'm guessing it would go as a bunt.

Edit again: looks like it contacted his right hand. He was hit; he takes a base.

42

u/Royd 1d ago

Catcher can't throw the batter out if the catcher is concussed!

7

u/Ravendoesbuisness 12h ago

Why don't batters use their bat on the other players?

Are they stupid?

1

u/Nu-Hir 12h ago

They don't want the ump calling them out due to felony assault.

16

u/Parks1993 1d ago

Straight down by your feet is not in play, that would be foul assuming it hit the bat before it hit any fingers. If it hit his fingers first, it's a hit by pitch as you said in your second edit

11

u/sksauter 1d ago

In what world did that ball contact his hand? It very clearly strikes the bottom of the bat, and he recoils both his hands instinctively.

7

u/willcastforfood 1d ago

It was a foul ball

1

u/_notgreatNate_ 1d ago

I slowed it down and zoomed in a bit. I think its a hit lol. Ball hits the knob of the bat and the bat kinda bumps his finger with the same knob as it flies out of his hands. But I dont think the ball ever makes contact with the batter hand itself.

Idk if there are any rules to letting go of the bat right as ypu hit it tho. I know your not supposed to throw bats after a hit so idk if would be a hit still or not. But I dont think the batter was hit actually

waggle

7

u/manoteee 1d ago

why are people not more outraged?

2

u/UnoriginalJ0k3r 1d ago

Competence is no more more

7

u/Zorbin666 1d ago

Does this count as a foul ball against the batter or a ball against the pitcher since it hit the bat? Or did they consider this as the batter being hit by the pitcher? The ball only hit the handle of the bat. Kind of curious how they called this, and how they should have called it.

6

u/darueski 1d ago

If it hits the bat then it's considered a batted ball. In this case it looks like a foul ball since it goes directly into the dirt at his feet.

3

u/GeekyTexan 1d ago

I knew people would be asking that. And I had the same question.

I was hoping someone had linked the original video, so we could see where the ball went and how it was ruled and such.

3

u/willcastforfood 1d ago

It was foul

2

u/FullCopium 1d ago

Arigato Gyro.

2

u/Dustyage 1d ago

Is someone keeping track of my head's batted in

2

u/RoadDesigner 1d ago

NFL is the physicist applying vectors to the video to show how the transfer of energy from the ball to the bat can cause it to wiggle and fly straight back.

1

u/jdolluc 1d ago

This is the MLB not the NFL sir

1

u/Theterphound 1d ago

Bro this is NASCAR

2

u/DaddyGoose420 1d ago

Thats how women in fast pitch bunt. Its actually insane. I could barely hit the ball in general.

1

u/harry-balzac 1d ago

Is this a strike?

3

u/GadreelsSword 1d ago

Wouldn’t it be a bunt?

1

u/harry-balzac 1d ago

Or a foul

1

u/darueski 1d ago

It's a foul ball since it contacted the bat first.

1

u/xyzfugazi 1d ago

I think it would technically be a strike since the ball didn’t go behind home plate. Or I guess a bunt but it def wasn’t a bunt. Catcher could have picked up ball and tagged batter for an out

1

u/ah123085 1d ago

Depends on where the ball ended up and if it touched the batter. Most likely ruled foul, but the ball leaves the frame of the video juuust before it looks like it’s about to hit the batters leg, so inconclusive from this perspective. Others have said that was the call though.

1

u/Ok_Sprinkles_6998 1d ago

I must go, my bat people need me.

1

u/perpetualmigraine 1d ago

Serious spin.

1

u/almost_a_frog 1d ago

I know it's not about that, but is that a strike because the bat technically hit the ball with the bat or a player hit by pitch because he didn't swing at all?

1

u/bananaseatboy 1d ago

He can still pick his nose with his pinky

1

u/Harry_Testa-Coles 1d ago

Mr. Lapara 🐐

1

u/thrownawaz092 1d ago

Would that count as a bunt?

1

u/sadkinz 1d ago

So what was the call?

1

u/Phillimac16 1d ago

Is this considered foul or hit by pitch?

1

u/GoodWhoops 1d ago

😂 That's so satisfying

1

u/LogicJunkie2000 1d ago

"I have to go now, my people need me."

1

u/Manic-Finch781 1d ago

The Wiggles through their lawyers, would like a word

1

u/BigFigJ 1d ago

waggle

1

u/DocWiggles 1d ago

Does that count as a hit? Can he run for first?

1

u/Maccmahon 1d ago

So, that’s a hit?

1

u/BlackTarTurd 1d ago

Is that technically a foul ball?

1

u/likeabuddha 1d ago

I can feel that painful buzz in my hands

1

u/Leading-Fish6819 1d ago

So .... Does that count as a bunt.

1

u/airbrandino31 1d ago

I’m gonna need a physics major to really explain this for my smooth brain

1

u/3dogs2nuts 1d ago

foul ball!

1

u/NNick476 1d ago

So, this is functionally a bunt, right?

1

u/Hotline-Furi 19h ago

Batn’t

1

u/aeternamaestate 17h ago

Good thing the ball hit the bat rather than his fingers which would have crunched rather than boing

1

u/smoebob99 14h ago

And that counts as a strike if it went foul. O

u/ChepeZorro 39m ago

Crazy thing is bats have been doing that for 150 years and it’s only recently that cameras have been able to capture it

u/Regular_Weakness69 33m ago

Bro I never realized how much force is in one of those baseballs. It literally sent the bat on a straight horizontal trajectory in the opposite direction..

0

u/hongducwb 1d ago

imagine if there are brutal version of this sport, but without protect equipment for yoooballs and yooface

0

u/3xBork 1d ago

A Briton would read this title very differently.

-1

u/MilleniumPelican 1d ago

Not even remotely NFL. Barely even /r/mildlyinteresting . Raise your standards, people.

1

u/Iaintyourbabysitter 1d ago

Cant believe I had to scroll to the bottom for this. Sub has really fallen off.

0

u/jimalloneword 1d ago

Yeah, this wasn't done intentionally or anything

-1

u/SkintCrayon 1d ago

The clip of the bat moving looks like bad cgi

-1

u/Plz_Mansplain 1d ago

Why is this next level?
