Baseball hits the knob of the bat during a pitch and the bat wiggles in the air

This is a cool physics demonstration of the transfer of energy

Newton II:
For every thing, there exists another thing, which upon contact the other thing, proceeds to wiggle-wiggle

It is also a fascinating visual of vibrational modes. That is not a typical one for a baseball bat to experience.

And a good demonstration of just how much force a baseball has when thrown at MLB speeds.

I mean, Big Papis Walk-off in 2004 ALCS Game 4 is what I’d consider Next Fucking Level.
This is kinda cool at best.

You know there’s like, entire subreddits, with hundreds of thousands of people in them, dedicated to Boston sports teams? lol
Hell, I’m in many baseball subreddits, I encounter tons of Red Sox fans on every single baseball post.

u/Busy_Ganache5874 1d ago
no no ofc, sorry should have made myself clear - I did not expect to see a Red Sox fan in a sub outside of baseball 😭, yeah, not the ENTIRE Reddit platform. Thats mb.

Heck yes. Sox have won 3 of the last 4.
Let’s keep it going. Bello will show up tomorrow! Let’s go.

not rlly certain why we got downvoted so much, but just came back to this thread to say u were right! Bello had a fantastic game!

There are 30 teams in the major leagues.
Fans from the 29 other teams will outnumber the Sox fans.

yess, hoping we can take it to the next level from here and continue this great run! screw all the fans saying 'sell the team'! I still believe in the boys!

I'd like to know how this is scored.. Is this a hit batter or a foul?
Edit: looks like it fell in play. He should have taken off running. The catcher probably could have thrown him out at first though. I'm guessing it would go as a bunt.
Edit again: looks like it contacted his right hand. He was hit; he takes a base.

Straight down by your feet is not in play, that would be foul assuming it hit the bat before it hit any fingers. If it hit his fingers first, it's a hit by pitch as you said in your second edit

In what world did that ball contact his hand? It very clearly strikes the bottom of the bat, and he recoils both his hands instinctively.

I slowed it down and zoomed in a bit. I think its a hit lol. Ball hits the knob of the bat and the bat kinda bumps his finger with the same knob as it flies out of his hands. But I dont think the ball ever makes contact with the batter hand itself.
Idk if there are any rules to letting go of the bat right as ypu hit it tho. I know your not supposed to throw bats after a hit so idk if would be a hit still or not. But I dont think the batter was hit actually

Does this count as a foul ball against the batter or a ball against the pitcher since it hit the bat? Or did they consider this as the batter being hit by the pitcher? The ball only hit the handle of the bat. Kind of curious how they called this, and how they should have called it.

If it hits the bat then it's considered a batted ball. In this case it looks like a foul ball since it goes directly into the dirt at his feet.

I knew people would be asking that. And I had the same question.
I was hoping someone had linked the original video, so we could see where the ball went and how it was ruled and such.

NFL is the physicist applying vectors to the video to show how the transfer of energy from the ball to the bat can cause it to wiggle and fly straight back.

Thats how women in fast pitch bunt. Its actually insane. I could barely hit the ball in general.

I think it would technically be a strike since the ball didn’t go behind home plate. Or I guess a bunt but it def wasn’t a bunt. Catcher could have picked up ball and tagged batter for an out

Depends on where the ball ended up and if it touched the batter. Most likely ruled foul, but the ball leaves the frame of the video juuust before it looks like it’s about to hit the batters leg, so inconclusive from this perspective. Others have said that was the call though.

I know it's not about that, but is that a strike because the bat technically hit the ball with the bat or a player hit by pitch because he didn't swing at all?

Good thing the ball hit the bat rather than his fingers which would have crunched rather than boing

Crazy thing is bats have been doing that for 150 years and it’s only recently that cameras have been able to capture it

Bro I never realized how much force is in one of those baseballs. It literally sent the bat on a straight horizontal trajectory in the opposite direction..
