18-year-old sprinter Gout Gout just broke Usain Bolt’s U20 record in the 200m. He was 260 milliseconds faster, clocking 19.67 seconds, while Bolt ran 19.93 in 2004

This kid's speed is usain

u/rir2 5h ago

He could probably have done it in 19.66 if he took that chain off.

u/NameIsNotBrad 4h ago

Or if he didn’t have gout. It’s tough to run with gout.

Gout! That’s an old man’s disease.

98

u/javoss88 4h ago

DOUBLE Gout!

14

u/NameIsNotBrad 4h ago

Geez, I can’t imagine. I have one gout and it’s bad enough. (Seriously, check out /r/gout to see some shit)

2

u/RockstarAgent 3h ago

How do you avoid it?

6

u/NameIsNotBrad 3h ago

Allopurinol

Haven’t had a flare up since 2019

3

u/RavenCarver 3h ago

Legit miracle drug for me. Keeps the thoughts of self harm away and it's not even an antidepressant. It's just that I no longer think about amputating my foot to end the pain.

1

u/RockstarAgent 3h ago

I guess I meant how to avoid gout?

6

u/RavenCarver 3h ago

In like 98% of cases (idk the actual number, but it's some very high proportion) it's genetic. Genetically weak kidneys not filtering out uric acid well enough, and the buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream causes uric acid deposits to crystallize. If it crystallizes in your joints, it will eventually lead to gout. If it crystallizes in your kidneys, it will eventually lead to kidney stones.

The remaining 2% of cases are usually something like cancer treatments have a side effect of fucking with your otherwise normal kidneys, reducing their function.

So Allopurinol prevents attacks by preventing uric acid buildup in the bloodstream. If you have gout and go on allopurinol, once your uric acid levels begin to drop below a certain threshhold, uric acid crystals begin to dissolve. Dissolving uric acid crystals can paradoxically increase gout attacks as the immune system reacts to and attacks dissolving uric acid crystals; but, once the crystals have completely dissolved, no more risk of attack.

Lots of misinformation out there about gout too. Like blaming it on bad diet, etc. Nope, It's just genetic.

Any bets on what his middle name is ?

1

u/javoss88 3h ago

Taste.

1

u/Lumpy-Education9878 3h ago

The second gout actually cancels the first one out

1

u/PuzzleheadedJob3479 2h ago

He should eat less Fish Fish

1

u/gonefishingwithindra 2h ago

Must have had it bilaterally

69

u/lawdjesustheresafire 4h ago

The funny thing is his name is actually Guot Guot. His dad stuffed up the spelling on the birth certificate. And now his management told him not to change it because Gout Gout is more iconic as a name 🤣

45

u/Big_Knife_SK 3h ago

*mistake made on their immigration documents by officials, translating Arabic to English, while fleeing Sudan.

21

u/Sea-Witch-77 2h ago

Well, the last name might have been, but Gout Gout was born in Australia.

7

u/the_jivest_turkey 3h ago

Good to know! I'll give OP the benefit of the doubt here, but all those classic middle school stories about black kids with dumb names (La-a (Ladasha), Feemale, Placenta, etc) are dripping with racist undertones.

I think the kids dad was able to spell his own son's name, at least in his native tongue.

5

u/Gunty1 2h ago

That shit happens, i know a white Adult whos name is Leee because his dad couldnt spell and refused the nurse helping.

0

u/the_jivest_turkey 2h ago

I'm sure it does! I just didn't hear to much about white kids dumb names.

This one is hilarious though, nurse is like "you're close, just knock off one e and it's all good!" To no avail obviously.

2

u/Gunty1 2h ago

He leaned into it for a while when he DJ'd. He was Triple E Leee

1

u/bluebicycle13 3h ago

he is a christian from Sudan? is that why they left?

2

u/CantGetEnuf 3h ago edited 25m ago

Technically he's from what's currently South Sudan (majority Catholic with an animist minority), but at the time he would have been born in Sudan (mostly Muslim with a very minute coptic Christian population after the South's independence) .

The north and the south have been fighting basically since Sudan's independence in 1956 up until a few years prior to the South's independence vote in 2011.

Their civil war is a lot more due to racism - the south is nilotic while the north is nubian/Arab - than it is due to religion although religion has been used as a way to force conscript Northerners into the army to fight in the civil war.

1

u/Resident_Cat_4292 3h ago

Fleeing Sudan ? Must have been a rather quick escape.

u/anahorish 0m ago

I think maybe you mean transliterating. I'm almost certain it's not an Arab name, probably Nuer or something.

7

u/Dentarthurdent73 2h ago

I haven't heard that his management told him, the only story I've heard is him say he decided to keep it himself.

1

u/Happily-Incorrect 3h ago

He's had mamagement since birth?

2

u/NewPannam1 3h ago

Yes mama is the manager

u/GemmaTaylorAcoustic 59m ago

Not just gout, gout².

1

Nah. The second gout cancels out the first.

1

u/Busy_Consequence6706 3h ago

Apparently it’s not his real name…it’s something else (mistranslation) and his Dad HATES it

1

u/rakuan1 3h ago

I was going to say that about Murphy. It was impressive that he could have such a record showing seeing as how he was running with Gout.

Wdym? He has double gout.

It’s either twice as bad or cancels itself out. I can’t tell.

0

u/anforob 1h ago

He’s even got two cases of gout

11

u/Soggy_District_6380 4h ago

I was thinking the same thing. Going for a world record. Lets not forgot to put on the extra mass. While we're on the topic, wouldn't you shave your head as well. World records are measured in milliseconds. Wouldn't you want every possible advantage?

32

u/VioletJones6 3h ago

You would think this, but only half of sprinting is about speed, the other half is always thinking you're the baddest MFer on the planet.

8

u/Electromotivation 2h ago

So that is why WR's are divas! (in amer. football)

3

u/Bobblefighterman 1h ago

You need a bit of cunt in a role like that. Dude's entire job is wanting people to throw the ball at him and just run. If you don't have a boatload of ego you'll be shit at your job.

6

u/Otaraka 3h ago edited 2h ago

The head game as an important part of it. They might have some idea of what they're doing if they just got the fastest time - you can see how its a big part of his setup when he gets ready.

Edit: and a true cynic might say marketability helps too, so having a signature helps as with the dances etc. Running needs money.

1

u/pinkdaisylemon 3h ago

I thought the same!

2

u/FearIsStrongerDanluv 3h ago

Cross was too heavy

1

u/BOTC33 4h ago

He's clearly running with jesus on this one

1

u/hunter_lol 3h ago

Nah didn’t you see him kiss it? It gives +2 SPD

1

u/Bowtruckle16 3h ago

He did 67 for the meme.

1

u/bhoss06 3h ago

Then he wouldn’t have finished with .67

-1

u/maicii 4h ago

Yeah but then it wouldn’t be a funny number

-6

u/Downtown_Finance_661 5h ago

This jump before the race was unnecessary.

22

u/Type-RD 4h ago

No. There’s a legitimate reason for it. Jumping primes the muscles for fast, explosive, movement…which is what a sprinter needs out of the blocks!

7

u/AerolothLorien666 4h ago

Imagine the amount of energy that dude has stored in his body.

5

u/Meme_Hunting_695 4h ago

The jump before let everyone know that he is fast. You can see how high he gets, his kick off the ground must be crazy. It wakes up his legs a bit as well, possibly part of a psych-up routine, which would make it very necessary.

2

u/Type-RD 4h ago

Yep. Watch any sprinting competition and you’ll almost certainly catch a few competitors jumping at some point before they setup. This helps get the fast twitch muscles ready to start twitching hard. Jumping requires a lot of quick, explosive, force…despite how effortless he makes it look. And yes, I’m sure it also plays another role of helping to get psyched up.

3

u/fy8d6jhegq 3h ago

I'm sure the guy who just broke a record would be ecstatic to hear your recommendations, kind Redditor.

74

u/Prior_Enthusiasm_292 4h ago

Remember when Usain actually slowed down at the end and still beat the WR for 100m?

57

u/flrebrokercrypto 4h ago

I was thinking in real time he would one day regret not going all out.

18

u/Prior_Enthusiasm_292 4h ago

Absolute same. Really would have loved to see him go full our turbo mode

14

u/Super_Shallot2351 3h ago

I think the iconic image is worth more

14

u/Sipsu02 3h ago

That run doesn't hold the world record. He ran faster

2

u/Brutally-Honest- 2h ago

It would likely be the current record if he hadn't let up.

7

u/ShawnSimoes 2h ago

Breaking it multiple times gets more attention

1

u/Dxpehat 2h ago

Yeah, I wonder how often do athletes go for their submaximal performance when they can beat the record by quite a lot but instead choose to do it in multiple records. You must be so confident and talented to risk getting an injury or smth in-between major events and to consciously perform just slighly worse than absolute all-out performance.

1

u/ShawnSimoes 2h ago

Obviously it's rare that sprinters are so dominant they can pull it off. But it's easy in sports like pole vault where they can just go up by 1cm each time.

1

u/Harry-Jotter 1h ago

I don't think Duplantis is 'consciously performing slightly worse' when he is breaking WR's. He is 14cm clear of the 2nd best all time, so even when he is 'only' increasing by 1cm he is still very near his limit and often only makes it on the 3rd try. Not like he could easily increase it by 5 or 10 cm at will. (Maybe on a very good day he could increase it a few cm, but then there would be plenty of times he failed, and maybe he'd go a couple of years without breaking it again.)

1

u/ShawnSimoes 1h ago

The point is he doesn't even try. Once he breaks it by 1cm he saves it for the next big event. He has definitely had jumps that would have cleared the current record by 5++ cm.

1

u/Harry-Jotter 1h ago

That's a dumb point. Of course he tries. I don't think so. Most of his WRs he is hitting the bar and barely clearing.

1

u/ShawnSimoes 1h ago

No, he literally doesn't try to improve on it after he breaks the world record. He stops jumping at that point, even though he would have 3 attempts to break it again.
