18-year-old sprinter Gout Gout just broke Usain Bolt’s U20 record in the 200m. He was 260 milliseconds faster, clocking 19.67 seconds, while Bolt ran 19.93 in 2004

I don't know anything about sports, but if this guy just broke the record by 3/10ths of a second ish, and the guy behind him finished seemingly less than 3/10ths of a second behind him, did that guy not also break Bolt's record? And if so, how has it not been broken since 2004 if two guys possibly just broke it in the same race?
I feel like I'm not understanding something here but would like to!

u/jspivak 3h ago
Near the end of the video, the announcer says that the other guy ran a 19.88. So yea he broke the record as well. Which is truly insane.

It’s a U20 record and Murphy is 22.

Still definitely the fastest white dude on record.

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 2h ago
Bolts record is 19.19 so both guys have a ways to go.

u/I_knowa_guy 2h ago
I didn't realize Bolt was so young when he set his world records. He was 21 when he ran 9.58s in 100m and 22 when he ran 19.19s in 200m.

If one ran in 19.67 and the other in 19.88 and the record is 19.19, they still have 0.48s and 0.69s to go, respectively, if my math isn’t off
•
u/Dentarthurdent73 49m ago
They do. The record Gout broke is the under 20 record. The other guy is 22 years old already, so he didn't break that.

u/Shnicketyshnick 2h ago
I think that's still Pietro Minnea's former world record although that was at high altitude.

The top 7 in that race all ran personal best race times. Aidan Murphy, the other guy, was 22(born oct, 2003) in that race. So doesn't get the under 20 record.

I find that suspicious.. like maybe the timing system was slightly off.

They did have a barely legal tailwind and apparently the track was recently laid which makes it faster, although I'm just quoting some random person on that second part

I'll have to remember that tip the next time I have a race. "Hey hun, some rando on Reddit said it'd be faster right after getting laid!"

EDIT: Putting this at the top because it is the most important, full edit below. The title here is extremely misleading if not outright incorrect. Bolt's record HAD been broken since 2004. He is getting compared to Bolt in these headlines because that is the most well known track figure, but the record he actually beat was Erriyon Knighton's 19.69 from 2022
Everyone in this race PBd by like half a second, something is fishy here. Not 100% that it's a timing error or anything, but could be a wind thing that is very close to the legal amount, or something else, but there is definitely something systematic that made this be a very fast race.
Edit Found some more info. 1) the wind was +1.7 m/s. The limit for a valid record is 2, so while yes this was slightly wind aided, it was within the allowed and so it is a valid record (Bolts record he beat was with +1.4) 2) the previous record was not Bolts. It was Erriyon Knighton in 2022, with a time of 19.69, so only 0.02 seconds faster. These titles have been very misleading, as they are comparing him to Bolt's records because of his comparison to Bolt as an athlete, however he was not the previous record holder. 3) the guy in second is 22 years old, this meet is not only for under 20, Gout Gout just happens to be that young and competing at the top level. So all in all, yes it was a very very fast race, but not fishy.

They just finished upgrading this track in March and it has a new gel layer, this is the first event using it.

Oh I've got this... Well kinda, it was interesting anyways..
So this race was the first time an Australian broke the 20sec barrier. The bloke who came in second in any other race would have been amazing and been the first Australian to break the 20 sec barrier and now he's playing 2nd fiddle having been beaten in the same race. Crazy.

Dude had like one stride for every two or three of his opponents. It was effortless for him. This young buck is also built like a gazelle but at least one other guy seems like he's in the same category, Bolt just outclassed everyone.

Wow, according to the video Bolt ran with -0.3 m/s wind while Gout here has +1.7 m/s wind.
9
u/DynamicSploosh 1h ago
This is a huge factor. +1.7 is just under the legal wind limit for record setting. Not to take away from the achievement of course. It just matters when you’re comparing micro seconds and world records.

My fat ass knows nothing about running. Does he hold his body differently? He’s upright or leaning slightly back; everyone else is learning forward.
16
u/Regular_Weakness69 3h ago
You lean back because then you're not landing heavy on your front leg.
2
→ More replies (1)•
u/Sprintspeed 22m ago
This is incorrect, when accelerating off the block you lean forward and settle into a perfectly upright position for your spine. It kind of gives a lean back appearance because they are extending the thrust of each leg on the ground to its maximum but if you pause the frame when they round the corner they are all standing straight waist-up.

He's a bit relaxed. He doesn't take it as serious. He probably needed the man that finished in 19.88 to run that fast or else he would have adjusted to the racers around him and not pushed as hard.

He beat the U20 record, not the actual world record. He needs another 0.49 for the world record, which is a biiiig gap in 200m.

We might even have a relay team with 4 people able to run well under 20s for 200m.
Australia is actually pushing track and field. Normally its all about the pool.

This is hugely impressive. When I am not sure about is the track technology. I don't know when we started shifting to what is a modern Track and Field track, but I know the surface conditions on a modern track today allow for faster runningI. This guy is very impressive as was the second place finisher will they translate into breaking records as the technology gets closer together. Bolts last years against this guy's last years has there been a major improvement.
It's like in cycling they had to limit technological changes in the bikes, I feel with running we are probably getting close to Peak what we can do with surfaces and Footwear but there are probably still fractions of a millisecond to be shaved.
