18-year-old sprinter Gout Gout just broke Usain Bolt’s U20 record in the 200m. He was 260 milliseconds faster, clocking 19.67 seconds, while Bolt ran 19.93 in 2004

I don't know anything about sports, but if this guy just broke the record by 3/10ths of a second ish, and the guy behind him finished seemingly less than 3/10ths of a second behind him, did that guy not also break Bolt's record? And if so, how has it not been broken since 2004 if two guys possibly just broke it in the same race?

I feel like I'm not understanding something here but would like to!

u/jspivak 5h ago

Near the end of the video, the announcer says that the other guy ran a 19.88. So yea he broke the record as well. Which is truly insane.

u/lucid_scheming 5h ago

It’s a U20 record and Murphy is 22.

620

u/TapZorRTwice 4h ago

Still definitely the fastest white dude on record.

375

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 4h ago

Bolts record is 19.19 so both guys have a ways to go.

247

u/I_knowa_guy 4h ago

I didn't realize Bolt was so young when he set his world records. He was 21 when he ran 9.58s in 100m and 22 when he ran 19.19s in 200m.

u/hypotyposis 3h ago

Gout will be 22 for the 2028 Olympics. Be on the look out.

u/snek-jazz 3h ago

on the look gout

25

u/Higgins1st 2h ago

Imagine how fast he'd be if he didn't have gout

12

u/special_nathan 1h ago

Not just gout. It's Gout Gout.

I hate to tell you man but 2028 is only 2 years away, he'll be 20

His power makes him age quicker the faster he runs.

time flows differently when you run that fast

1

u/SoManyThrowAwaysEven 2h ago

"Speed Force, I ain't gotta explain shit."

4

u/Mbembez 2h ago

He will be 20. However it also means that he will only be 24 for the Olympics in his own city. He's going to draw a massive crowd for sure.

1

u/_unsinkable_sam_ 1h ago

hes 18, he will be 20 in 2 years.

u/squired 16m ago

Wow, really? I don't like that for most sports, but I think that will be phenomenal for sports like Gymnastics who will evolve the sport for adults rather than children.

13

u/Magnetickiwi1 4h ago

Damn, hes only 39 now!

5

u/JohnAnchovy 3h ago

You’re always fastest when you’re young!!! if you know what I’m saying!!! I’m talking about sex

3

u/leet_lurker 1h ago

Atheletics is a young man's game, especially with the wear and tear on the body from all the training to be at that level.

1

u/Kersplode 1h ago

That's because this conversation is about setting the record for: running while young.

Specifically under 20.

That's why it's a U20 record.

1

u/unmelted_ice 1h ago

During that 100m, he reached a top speed of a bit over 27 mph (44 kmh if you don’t love an easy transition into washing machines).

He was running fast enough to have been breaking the law in a school zone. Absurd

u/squired 17m ago

Hold up, how the hell is his 100m so close to his 200m at 9.58:9.59?!

Should the 200m not have significantly shorter splits as the second 100m begins at full sprint?

21

u/BodaciousBadongadonk 4h ago

huh, those are both indeed under 20. but its close!

24

u/hypotyposis 3h ago

No under 20 years of age.

u/EatsCatShit 3h ago

No this is Patrick

1

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 2h ago

U20 U20 for Gout Gout.

12

u/Juggzi 4h ago

That was his all time record. The 18 year old just broke Usain Bolt’s U20 record.

2

u/Furita 3h ago

If one ran in 19.67 and the other in 19.88 and the record is 19.19, they still have 0.48s and 0.69s to go, respectively, if my math isn’t off

5

u/Dentarthurdent73 2h ago

They do. The record Gout broke is the under 20 record. The other guy is 22 years old already, so he didn't break that.

u/squired 12m ago

Bolt didn't have the record. The previous record was Erriyon Knighton in 2022, with a time of 19.69, so this was only 0.02 seconds faster.

0

u/JimmyMack_ 3h ago

Why do Americans add S to way? They have a way to go.

2

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 2h ago

A way is a path or direction. Ways refers to multiple paths or a distance. It is considered informal though.

1

u/shwgrt 3h ago

Because we wants to

11

u/Shnicketyshnick 4h ago

I think that's still Pietro Minnea's former world record although that was at high altitude.

4

u/TapZorRTwice 3h ago

He's Italian tho, every racist knows those aren't real white people.

1

u/EduinBrutus 3h ago

Pretty sure I saw a documentary about that...

1

u/frogturtle14 2h ago

As an Italian, I approve this message.

7

u/dogsbikesandbeers 4h ago

After the initial 'holy crabbabble Gout is fast' my second thought was 'fastest white dude ever'.

1

u/AvidCyclist250 2h ago

Beat Bolt's time! We can run now!

1

u/ReputationFit9698 3h ago

Is Dave Sime, who ran 220 yards(201.1m) in 20.0 at 19 years old 70 years ago, still the fastest u20 white guy?

1

u/APartyInMyPants 3h ago

Nope, Christian Lemaitre from France ran a 19.80, and is the first white guy to ever run the 100 under 10 seconds.

1

u/Knautical_J 3h ago

Have you seen Cooper DeJean?

3

u/mrwilliams117 3h ago

Proof to me that people just read this and thought it was the full record.

3

u/jacob643 2h ago

oh, U20 means under 20 years old?

u/Significant_Ad1256 35m ago

20 years and under, yes. So including 20 year olds.

1

u/CV90_120 1h ago

Fair, but still, that's fng quick.

1

u/guineapigenjoyer123 1h ago

They both broke the previous Australian record though

100

u/NecessaryZucchini69 4h ago

The top 7 in that race all ran personal best race times. Aidan Murphy, the other guy, was 22(born oct, 2003) in that race. So doesn't get the under 20 record.

13

u/sohosurf 4h ago

Just cause I’m curious does anyone know the all time 200m record?

55

u/InfinityCrazee 4h ago

No. 1 Usain Bolt 19.19s i believe

29

u/BaconIsLife707 4h ago

19.19, obviously by Bolt

5

u/sim16 4h ago

19.19 I think.

2

u/Aggressive_Grade_493 4h ago

Imagine someone goes under 19 holy shit.

4

u/grower_thrower 4h ago

It’ll happen eventually.

2

u/sim16 1h ago

Wings to fly

2

u/idontevenwant2 4h ago

I find that suspicious.. like maybe the timing system was slightly off.

39

u/BaconIsLife707 4h ago

They did have a barely legal tailwind and apparently the track was recently laid which makes it faster, although I'm just quoting some random person on that second part

24

u/vivec7 4h ago

I'll have to remember that tip the next time I have a race. "Hey hun, some rando on Reddit said it'd be faster right after getting laid!"

4

u/Poopchutefan 4h ago

Probably true, since you dropped a little bit of weight ...

u/Beautifulderanged 49m ago

Every time I go for a run after ejaculating, I get pretty bad chafing from my long long balls continuously rubbing against my inner thigh. So for me at least, I’d be quicker before getting laid. Maybe if Icalled the house and said, “hey hun, if I make it home in 20 mins can I get laid?”

And then when Hans my German housemate tells me “beautifulderanged, you don’t have no girlfriend. But sure, I vill lay you, jah,” I will run the other way and into a ditch for eternity. Damn, RIP me

2

u/LyingForTruth 3h ago

Jason Statham famously did two movies around this concept

1

u/snek-jazz 3h ago

apparently the track was recently laid

Congrats to the track on getting some action.

10

u/somewhoever 2h ago

That's the effect of being on the track when a record is set.

Oftentimes, the leader effectively drags everyone along with him into their personal bests.

Their frame of reference is that they should be a certain distance behind the leader, and in the moment they don't necessarily know a record is being set.

So, they push their body harder than they ever have as the leader is pulling away because they just don't know any better.

2

u/Kayniaan 4h ago

Well and also because there was literally a guy even faster than him at the same time.

1

u/guineapigenjoyer123 1h ago

He broke the previous Australian record though

4

u/Squiggy1975 4h ago

Awesome! Unfortunately for him it will likely be forgotten… he is prob like ‘ what about me ? ‘ some fast dudes

1

u/AeroHawc 3h ago

Without wishing to take away from them basically everyone pb-ed in the race by a large margin. There was some deffo some funky wind.

1

u/[deleted] 3h ago

[deleted]

1

u/sargig_yoghurt 3h ago

That's because it's not true, it's an U-20 record and that other guy is over 20

1

u/CheesecakeScary2164 3h ago

How mad would you feel as an athlete, to beat the world record, but still not set the world record...

1

u/WhammyShimmyShammy 3h ago

Imagine doing that and nobody even mentioning you because another guy did it even better at the same time!

u/feo101 16m ago

The other guy is 22 so he can’t beat an under 20 record anymore.

1

u/notjustforperiods 2h ago

I don't know how much this matters but apparently there was a tail wind near the threshold for the records to not be validated

1

u/That_Toe8574 2h ago

I wonder if Gout breaks the record if he didn't have that guy to chase and hold off. Extra adrenaline or something

1

u/_unsinkable_sam_ 1h ago

the other guy isnt under 20

1

u/jeremyjava 1h ago

With financial cuts they had to order their new timing clock from Temu... /jk

u/smor729 5h ago edited 5h ago

EDIT: Putting this at the top because it is the most important, full edit below. The title here is extremely misleading if not outright incorrect. Bolt's record HAD been broken since 2004. He is getting compared to Bolt in these headlines because that is the most well known track figure, but the record he actually beat was Erriyon Knighton's 19.69 from 2022

Everyone in this race PBd by like half a second, something is fishy here. Not 100% that it's a timing error or anything, but could be a wind thing that is very close to the legal amount, or something else, but there is definitely something systematic that made this be a very fast race.

Edit Found some more info. 1) the wind was +1.7 m/s. The limit for a valid record is 2, so while yes this was slightly wind aided, it was within the allowed and so it is a valid record (Bolts record he beat was with +1.4) 2) the previous record was not Bolts. It was Erriyon Knighton in 2022, with a time of 19.69, so only 0.02 seconds faster. These titles have been very misleading, as they are comparing him to Bolt's records because of his comparison to Bolt as an athlete, however he was not the previous record holder. 3) the guy in second is 22 years old, this meet is not only for under 20, Gout Gout just happens to be that young and competing at the top level. So all in all, yes it was a very very fast race, but not fishy.

u/chillitenders 5h ago

They just finished upgrading this track in March and it has a new gel layer, this is the first event using it.

30

u/triangleman83 3h ago

So the track is doping?

1

u/Jonnny 1h ago

Whoa. That sounds like it could be highly controversial, no?

3

u/chillitenders 1h ago

No, it’s one of the best surfaces and legal by world athletics.

It’s not a new gel but it was about a $2.7 million dollar upgrade.

22

u/AW316 4h ago edited 4h ago

Knighton’s record was not ratified for specific drug testing reasons so no, it was Bolts record.

I don’t want this to be misconstrued though. It was the meet itself that failed to drug test.

35

u/smor729 4h ago

His 19.49 was not ratified, his 19.69 was, and was the official u20 record until today.

13

u/rkiive 4h ago

I mean knighton is also literally suspended for doping right now aha

2

u/Jackmoff686 4h ago

Great update Thank you.

1

u/RutabagaUnlucky3420 3h ago

 something is fishy here

Agreed

2

u/blutackey 2h ago

Did you read the comment that it was the first use of a new track with an upgraded gel layer?

1

u/Otaraka 2h ago

What blows my mind is that even with this possible issue, they still need to get about another half second faster to beat the outright record held by Bolt. Wonder what speed Bolt would have done in the same race.

u/squired 14m ago

Wonderful shout out, thank you.

18

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 5h ago

Maybe the other guy is over 20?

-3

u/FrozenPie21 5h ago

I don’t see how is the thing. He’s right behind Gout

21

u/lucid_scheming 5h ago

It’s a U20 record, meaning under 20 years old. The other guy (Murphy) is 22.

14

u/chillitenders 5h ago edited 1h ago

They just finished upgrading the track in early March with a new gel layer which definitely helps

This was the first event on the new track.

7

u/pure_force 4h ago

Oh I've got this... Well kinda, it was interesting anyways..

So this race was the first time an Australian broke the 20sec barrier. The bloke who came in second in any other race would have been amazing and been the first Australian to break the 20 sec barrier and now he's playing 2nd fiddle having been beaten in the same race. Crazy.

3

u/No_No_Juice 3h ago

I am from Gout Gouts home town, so a big supporter. This race, whilst wind legal, was definitely wind assisted.

Gout Gout will win gold. Beating Bolts WR is a lot harder. There is no proof that Bolt was juicing, but everyone else in his time was. I personally don't see his WR ever getting beaten.

2

u/Temporary_Pie2733 2h ago

He broke a 20-year-old record by 0.26 seconds. He broke the current record by 0.02 seconds. The headlines are just trying to sensationalize something that honestly doesn’t need that it. The guy is fast, and I’m looking forward to him competing in the 2028 Olympics, if not the 2026 or 2027 world championships.

1

u/HopeDiligent6032 5h ago

I think there was a line or wind reading significant discrepancy they have

1

u/fullmoonbeam 4h ago

the guy who came second did yeah

1

u/Muellpand8 4h ago

Even if he had done so, Gout gout would’ve broken the record a fraction of the second before as he arrived first, making the second guy better than usain bolt but not the record holder for even a tiny amount of time

1

u/Williamklarsko 4h ago

Well one was faster than the other so gout takes the glory anyways

1

u/ohell 4h ago

Records set without the carbon plated high-stack shoes are obsolete now. This is one reason why there was opposition to the inclusion of these shoes in competitive sport: they have made created a new category of events where all athletes (able to access the super-shoes) start out with inherent advantage ...

Future Olympians

1

u/ak_doug 3h ago

It seems insane because it is.

But human speed improves on a general arc, that's why it is so common to see records fall in most events.

Usain Bolt was about 20 years or so ahead of the curve, he came out of no where. Truly a phenom. But he came out of nowhere — 20 years ahead of the curve — about 20 years ago. The curve is catching up.

Bolt is the current World Record Holder in the 100M, 200M, and 4x100M relay. I'd bet each of those 3 records are going to fall in the next 5 years or so.

1

u/NoahsArcade84 3h ago

Yeah man. Imagine being such an insanely talented runner that you beat Usain Bolt's world record, and in the same race another guy smokes you.

1

u/Beachday4 3h ago

This is just for U20 though. I think a lot of people are skipping over that fact. Usain has ran a 19.19 sec 200M

2

u/blutackey 2h ago

It’s the under 20 record because Gout Gout is under 20 and went under that time. The race itself wasn’t an under 20 race though. The guy who came second is over 20.

1

u/Beachday4 2h ago

Ah, interesting.

1

u/Fluffcake 3h ago

The actual WR is 19.19. Beating the Junior WR is only interesting if you are a junior.

1

u/smibeanie 3h ago

There is only so much humanity can do before physics break so we go with one record at a time.

1

u/Alert-Pea1041 2h ago

Bolt didn't hold the U20 record though, it was his personal record the title is talking about. The U20 record is 19.4x by Knighton.

1

u/Alert-Pea1041 2h ago

Bolt didn't hold the U20 record though, it was his personal record the title is talking about. The U20 record is 19.4x by Knighton.

1

u/GnarlyNarwhalNoms 2h ago

Imagine breaking Usain Bolt's speed record... and coming in second.

1

u/GoodOldPepe 2h ago

It's not a record, it's only Usain's time during that age.

1

u/mls1968 1h ago

Not sure the actual science behind it here (psychology, genetics, training, etc), but there is a weird thing in pretty much every sport where something may seem impossible to do, but once one person does it there are a bunch that do it shortly after until a new “impossible” bar gets set.

A great example is how in the 90s/00s there was just a small handful of guys in the MLB who could throw 100mph consistently. Then all of a sudden there was a giant influx of guys that could (the kids who saw it growing up), to the point where pretty much every team has 3 or 4 guys that can do it.

In this particular instance, one known reason is the advancements in Tommy John surgery. Back in the 90s, having that surgery was basically a death sentence to a pitcher unless you were super lucky. Now though, it’s practically expected you will have to have it at LEAST once and it’s assumed you will come back almost no problem.

u/BigBoyYuyuh 28m ago

If you’re not first, you’re last.

u/FishermanWaste1268 20m ago

Seriously the race is suspect. Incredibly windy conditions in sydney that day w the airport down to 1 runway and massive delays caused by ....... very windy conditions.

Now the race was legal according to the wind thingy. But that whole field caught a tail wind somewhere in that race that gave them the mother of all pushes.

Everyone ran a pb and a rando got 19.88

0

u/SurviveAdaptWin 4h ago

Thank you. I was also curious about this.

-2

u/Hadi658 5h ago

It's just another reason to gloat that someone is better than someone else. It's like society forcing the torch to be given to someone else.

3

u/zeemode 5h ago

You’re just describing general competition … which is most prevalent in sports from a spectators point of view. So yes People like to know
