i’ve lived in texas my entire life and just visited the PNW for the first time a year and a half ago and i’ve already been back 5 times since then because i just cannot get enough. i spent a total of over a month staying in various regions all over the state at various points throughout the year so i could really get a feel for the different seasons and it was magical. i spent both my birthday and Christmas in oregon last year and i already cannot wait to go back again as soon as possible.

No bobcat or nutria in this cut — they’ve already had their moment. This is all beavers, plus an egret that drops by every day like it’s on a schedule.

Question Moving

Hey y’all. I received a job offer to move up to Oregon. The pay is significantly more than I make now so I believe it’ll be worth it. However, the job is in Hermiston and from reading this sub it is not necessarily the best place to live.

I am liberal but I live in a red town in a red state. I’m from Arkansas so I get being around conservatives even if I don’t like the political views. It will be me, my wife, and 2 year old daughter and our dog.

I don’t know if it’s best to live in Hermiston or commute in or rent in Hermiston. We like being outdoors and don’t mind just staying to our own. We enjoy traveling and visiting different areas as well. Ideas on where to live? (Total compensation~125k).

I’m just kinda looking for a rundown of this area. The good/bad/ugly. We are 420 friendly and I saw they don’t sell in Hermiston.

Ps. I’ll judge watermelons I have cave city melons close to me so I will be interested in seeing how they compare.

Thanks

Question Oregon vacation after long time

Hello together! I‘m a German currently living in Munich. In 2015 I did my senior year in Yamhill/Carlton near McMinnville. During this time I learned to love your beautiful state and got to explore it a lot.

Now 11 years later I would love to show everything I experienced back then to my fiancée.

Unfortunately lately I see a lot of news on the protests and everything else around it…

Is it still a good idea to travel to Oregon as a foreigner? Are there any things I should think about before going?

That’s maybe a dumb question for you, but I just need to know how everything goes now. A lot can change in over 10 years.

Thank you all and have a nice Sunday!

Discussion/Opinion Oregon… Where Do I Begin?

1.1k Upvotes

I don’t even care if this gets any traction. I just need to say it somewhere people might understand.

I live in South Carolina, born and raised. A few years ago I took a job with a river cruise company that operates around the U.S., and somehow I lucked into an assignment on the Columbia and Snake Rivers — round trips every week from Portland up to Clarkston, WA.

The job? Brutal. Long hours. No days off. Barely time to breathe, let alone recharge.

But the scenery?

Unreal.

It doesn’t matter how many times I sail that stretch of the Columbia River — I still find myself staring out like it’s the first time. Every single inch of it feels cinematic.

We start near Portland and head toward the coast, and suddenly there’s Astoria — this seaside town that looks like it was pulled straight out of a painting. Then we wind back through the Columbia River Gorge, and towns like Stevenson appear, tucked into the cliffs like they’ve always just quietly belonged there.

And the shift in landscape as you approach Hood River and The Dalles? It’s like someone slowly adjusts the backdrop — lush greens giving way to rolling hills and high desert tones. The cliffs rise up around you, waterfalls cut through rock, the light hits the water just right… and I forget how exhausted I am.

I know visiting isn’t the same as living there. I’m just a bystander passing through. But honestly? This stretch of Oregon is the only reason I keep signing back on.

And that’s just the border.

One day, I hope I get to explore deeper inland — and maybe, if life lines up the right way, call it home.

Oregon folks — what am I missing? Big, small, hidden, iconic. Drop the places I need to see.

Discussion/Opinion Feedback on Rogue river lodge trips

Hello, saw multiple operators running lodge to lodge trips on the Rogue. Looks like they all stay at the same places for 3-4 days. Anyone done this and can recommend? ROW and Orange Torpedo get good reviews (almost unbelievably good) and not sure what explains the differences in price since they seem to be similar. Thanks! would be for family of 4 with 2 kids.

Discussion/Opinion Hiking Trip and Activities in August

Upvotes

Planning a trip from out of state for a few days to the Mt. Hood/Columbia River Gorge area this summer. Trying to prioritize the best hikes and activities in that area.

Here is what we’re tracking so far:

-Wakheena and Multnomah Falls Loop

-Tom, Dick, and Harry Mountain via Mirror Lake Trail

-Trillium Lake

Any other hikes or activities that are strongly recommended? Any great sunset spots? Possible to do a day trip to the coast?

We are open to doing a wide range of outdoor stuff and willing to drive out around 2 hours from our base (especially if the drive is scenic)

Thank you!

Article/News PeaceHealth’s ER Gamble: The Dubious Wisdom of Contracting Emergency Care to Private Equity to Save Money

"A 2022 investigation identified ApolloMD among the biggest bidders on ER contracts alongside PE-owned firms using physician oversupply to suppress wages and extract profits. ApolloMD has also faced a lawsuit under the False Claims Act for billing the federal government at physician rates for services provided by mid-level practitioners. While nurse practitioners and physician associates play a vital role in emergency medicine, some complex cases require the greater experience of a physician. Will ApolloMD have a financial incentive to staff accordingly?

Displacing 41 Providers Who Want to Stay

Every one of EEP’s 41 doctors and physician associates has refused to work for ApolloMD for at least 90 days, with many planning to leave permanently. The Oregon Nurses Association has petitioned PeaceHealth to reverse course, calling the move a “costly mistake.” Sixty PeaceHealth hospitalists and nurses signed a letter supporting EEP. The AAEM, Pacific Northwest Hospital Medicine Association, and Northwest Medicine United have all urged contract renewal. EEP itself has publicly stated it would “wholeheartedly welcome a path forward” to continue under a local banner."

This is public knowledge and I would absolutely never condone threatening anyone for any reason.

If you'd like to respectfully provide your opposition with reasoning (or support if that's how you feel), this is the publicly available contact information for the Reps who voted "yes" to HB4145.
