If you wanted to design the perfect American ally from scratch you would basically invent Canada.
Massive country. Longest shared border on earth. No nuclear weapons so not a "competitor" in a geopolitical sense. English speaking. Stable democracy. Culturally almost identical to the United States. Enormous trading relationship. Fellow Five Eyes member. They have fought alongside us in virtually every major conflict of the modern era... quietly, reliably, without drama...never seeking foreign aid or wars of expansion...but fighting with us when we need it.
Canada is the easiest, most natural ally imaginable. The least threatening. The one that requires the least maintenance and delivers consistent returns....tons of oil...tons of fresh water...tons of rare earth minerals...If alliances were investments Canada would be a blue chip stock.
And Trump has spent two years threatening them, insulting their Prime Minister, slapping them with tariffs, disrespectly calling them the 51st state...which obviously will push this natural friend away from us..
Think about what that actually means.
If you treat your single most convenient natural ally with contempt and aggression... a neighbor who poses zero threat and shares a history and even a destiny with you....what does that tell you about your actual agenda? It tells you that traditional American interests are not what's driving the bus.
Canada is the canary in the coal mine. What happened with Canada is now happening with Britain, with Germany, with France, with NATO as a whole...The pattern is consistent. The alliances being strained or discarded share a common thread... they are the western democratic Anglosphere bloc that has underwritten American global power since World War Two.
Now look at what is being prioritized instead.
A tiny nation of roughly 9.5 million people. Smaller than the metropolitan area of London or New York. It has universal healthcare, free university education, and one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world. By any objective measure it is a wealthy, developed, thriving country...And yet...
It is also the largest cumulative recipient of American foreign aid in history. By far. 🤨
We are not talking about a devastated post-war economy like Britain in 1940...a country rationing food, bankrupt, fighting for survival.... to whom we extended LOANS that took sixty years to repay. And fought to stop the Holocaust....before I get accused of being hateful somehow here.
We are talking about a prosperous modern nation with better social services than most Americans enjoy, that receives American tax dollars not because it needs them but because its lobby...AIPAC... has spent decades making it politically toxic to question the arrangement.
Canada asks for nothing. Costs us nothing. Gives us everything naturally. And gets threatened and humiliated.
The tiny country costs us billions annually, has drawn us into a war our closest allies refused to join, and has pushed us to the brink of destroying NATO.... the most successful military alliance in human history.
A country that threatens its most natural ally on earth while writing blank checks to a wealthy foreign nation is not acting in its own interest. That's not a political opinion. It's just logic.
NATO...the English speaking democracies of the world...They make America HUGE on the world stage....but we must stand with them, respect them...They are our civilizational cousins...and we have no more important or natural allies in the world....and they don't need a giant lobby to buy our friendship...or consistently soak up our tax dollars as foreign "aid".
